The Relationship Of The Merchant Marine To National Power, George D. Synon Feb 2019

The Relationship Of The Merchant Marine To National Power, George D. Synon

Naval War College Review

In considering the relation of the Merchant Marine to national power, it is perhaps automatic for members of the Armed Forces to regard a large fleet of commercial shipping as indispensible to the security of the United States.

Organization For National Security, Richard C. Mangrum

Naval War College Review

Important changes were made in the whole structure for national security when Congress passed the National Security Act of 1947. During the past two years most of us in the armed forces have become more or less familiar with these changes and with their impact on all phases of military operations.

Comics In Action: A Reflection Of The Dominant Narrative In World War Ii, Spencer Gutierrez Feb 2019

Comics In Action: A Reflection Of The Dominant Narrative In World War Ii, Spencer Gutierrez

SMU Journal of Undergraduate Research

In this paper, I argue that the propagandized use of comic books during World War II promoted views among Americans which contributed to antipathy towards Americans of Japanese and German descent. More generally, the goal of the essay is to highlight the importance of comic books as a reflection of the times – they simultaneously influence and are influenced by society’s dominant ideas – and promote the further study of such material. I examine the text and art from three comic book covers dated from 1942-1943. An analysis of these selections suggests that comic books depicted Axis soldiers as savage …

“Are You White Or Dutch?”: Hendrina Hospers And Living Among Apaches, Douglas Firth Anderson

Northwestern Review

Hendrina Hospers (1880-1968) was a home missionary of the Women’s Board of Domestic Missions of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). She grew up in a Dutch-American Protestant colony led by her father, Henry Hospers. The colony, centered in Orange City, Iowa, was built around church and school, and Hendrina participated in both. She graduated from the Northwestern Classical Academy (affiliated with the RCA) in 1897. She taught in public schools until both her parents were dead. From 1907 to 1946, she worked as an RCA home missionary, first with the Chiricahua Apaches around Fort Sill, Oklahoma, and briefly around …

Light Without Heat, R. E. Williams

Naval War College Review

The fact that modern warfare is everybody's business was distinctly underscored by the proceedings of the War College RoundTable Discussions held during the first week of May, 1949. These conferences, conceived with a view to obtaining the very best in current strategic thinking, were attended by outstanding men in civilian life and high ranking officers from all branches of the Armed Forces.

Turkey, Walter L. Wright Jr.

Naval War College Review

The country, Turkey, with which I'm dealing this morning is by present day count a small country. It has approximately the same area as the two American states of California and Montana. The area is about two hundred and ninety four thousand square miles, and those two states are a little bit larger than that. It has very much the same topography.

I am certainly grateful to the Admiral for his introduction. Speech-making is bad enough in any event-it's a terrible thing but I don't know that it's any worse than speech-listening.

Finance In War, Raymond Rodgers Feb 2019

Finance In War, Raymond Rodgers

Naval War College Review

This whole question of financing war, as it is done nowadays, is not fully understood. In bygone days it had to be done by inflating the currency, and before that by hoarding up treasure or hoarding up actual gold 'value of one sort or another.

Bomber Offensive, L. Maclean Feb 2019

Bomber Offensive, L. Maclean

Naval War College Review

War is essentially an affair of ethics as well as , economics and, though the economical aspect presses heavily on the people of the world today, the ethical aspect has continuously occupied the thoughts of mankind in an unceasing endeavour to diminish war's inevitable horrors, and to limit and localize its effects. The advocates of "air power", in urging their claim for precedence, took a firm stand, with a foot planted squarely on each of these bases.

The Role Of The Navy In Future Warfare, Charles R. Brown

Naval War College Review

The title of my talk today is the role of the Navy in future warfare. In such a discussion my inclination is to immediately thrust myself into the future since the history of the past, however glorious, is of little but academic interest to us unless it has definite application in the future.

Sea Power Is World Power, George H. Miller Feb 2019

Sea Power Is World Power, George H. Miller

Naval War College Review

Situated between two great oceans, the United States is unmistakably a maritime power. Our forefathers, who crossed the seas to found our nation, were seafaring people. They derived their living from the sea, and it is because of the sea that our nation grew and prospered. The seas have given us security and economic stability, and these two elements are wholly related, one to the other.

Economic Warfare - The Attack, Charles Cortez Abbott

Naval War College Review

In order to place economic warfare in some perspective, it may serve a useful purpose at this point to make a number of observations regarding it. Economic warfare of course is not a new development. It is probably as old as warfare itself.

An Emergent Theory Of Executive Leadership Selection: Leveraging Grounded Theory To Study The U.S. Military's Special Forces Assessment And Selection Process, Darryl J. Lavender Feb 2019

An Emergent Theory Of Executive Leadership Selection: Leveraging Grounded Theory To Study The U.S. Military's Special Forces Assessment And Selection Process, Darryl J. Lavender

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research documents the assessment and selection process used by the U.S. Military’s Special Forces for over 70 years using Grounded Theory Methodology. Three independent studies were used to document the Special Forces process of selection. Through comparative reanalysis of each study’s data a model emerged explaining the Special Forces phenomena of assessment and selection.

Analysis was conducted in three phases using open, axial, and selective coding which allowed for the identification of a smaller set of themes which categorized the process of selection. The final step involved the development of two analytical matrices explaining the central theme of selection …
