Nudge Or Puppet? Decision-Making, Ethics, And Leadership In The Information Age, Yihe Yang May 2019

Nudge Or Puppet? Decision-Making, Ethics, And Leadership In The Information Age, Yihe Yang

M.A. in Leadership Studies: Capstone Project Papers

In the past two decades, algorithm-based information technology has provided great convenience and a strong theoretical foundation for organizational leadership decision-making, since the analysis of contextual information from data analysis and mathematical models enhances decision-makers’ judgments. However, improper use and insufficient understanding of information technology also bring negative results throughout the practical application. To eliminate adverse effects, organization leader requires rigorous ethical demands. A case study for IBM and literature review constituted the paper’s methodology, analyzed through the East-West decision theory, the duality of information technology, and the ancient Chinese ethics. Also, the leadership ethics and the adaptive leadership theory …

Ptolemaic Elephants In Iii Maccabees And The Social Stratification Of The Kingdom Of Kush, Leslie Dean Sam Jr. May 2019

Ptolemaic Elephants In Iii Maccabees And The Social Stratification Of The Kingdom Of Kush, Leslie Dean Sam Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Trade helped to catapult early societies from hunter gatherers – living in small communities of friends and family – to living in sprawling urban environments of ideas and exchange. Socialization and the exchange of ideas – and war—molded our modern times into what it is now. Ancient Nubia found itself in a conundrum that would test their resolve. Ptolemaic-ran Egypt was at their border, forcing themselves in as conquerors, unapologetic towards the millennia old culture that contributed much to their society. With a truce made between the Greeks and Meroe, trade was inevitably was enacted between the two power houses, …

Imitatio, Civic Education, And The Digital Temper, Jessy Ohl May 2019

Imitatio, Civic Education, And The Digital Temper, Jessy Ohl

Speaker & Gavel

This essay advocates for the reinvigoration of imitatio pedagogy to reestablish disciplinary commitment to civic education in perilous democratic times. I argue that imitatio offers a needed response to several contemporary democratic challenges. After mapping out three theoretical relations of imitatio, I describe one approach for inculcating democratic citizenship via imitatio designed for undergraduate education. Finally, I conclude by reflecting on the specific affordances of imitatio education in the digital age and call on educators of rhetoric and communication to once again perceive democratic well-being as a disciplinary responsibility.

Silencing “Sedition”: How Abraham Lincoln And John Adams Desecrated The Constitution To Combat Public Reprimand, Jordan Newport May 2019

Silencing “Sedition”: How Abraham Lincoln And John Adams Desecrated The Constitution To Combat Public Reprimand, Jordan Newport

Lincoln Memorial University Law Review Archive

Throughout history, principally during actual or feared times of war, the United States government has seemingly interpreted the First Amendment to the United States Constitution as a mere suggestion and not as the “Supreme Law of the Land.” This has led to well-documented difficulties related to infringement upon individuals’ Constitutional rights. In this article, the governmental action taken to combat “sedition” in two distinct periods of American History will be addressed. I suggest that while people attack Lincoln for suspending habeas corpus, thus providing a gateway to Constitutional violations, this is just another act throughout the course of history in …

Analysis Considering The Significance Of The Use Of Naval Blockades During The Napoleonic Wars, John J. Janora May 2019

Analysis Considering The Significance Of The Use Of Naval Blockades During The Napoleonic Wars, John J. Janora

The Exposition

During the course of the 18th and 19th centuries the British Navy took an age old method of manipulating and dominating an enemy, the naval blockade, and perfected it. The blockade was going to be used by a generation of admirals, captains, and crews in a way that would cause pain, financially, physically and psychologically, on a large swath of the western world, much of it specifically centered on ensuring that Napoleon and his aggressively expansionist France would pay too dear a price if they tried to move off of the European mainland. The British Navy and their continued use …

The Dialectics Of Cyberspace: Communication Ethics As First Response To Cyber Attacks, Matthew P. Mancino May 2019

The Dialectics Of Cyberspace: Communication Ethics As First Response To Cyber Attacks, Matthew P. Mancino

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project recognizes the need to re-conceptualize cyberspace according to its characteristic dialectical tensions in order to offer lasting, adequate responses to cyber attacks. Scholars across multiple disciplines recognize the ineffectiveness of perimeter defense strategies, or the raising of defensive walls to protect sensitive information as the primary response to cyber attacks (Denning, 2001; Jang-Jaccard & Nepal, 2014; MacKinnon, Bacon, Gan, Loukas, Chadwick, Frangiskatos, 2013). Thus, this project suggests that in addition to a literacy in coding, corporations and policy makers must attend to what Ronald C. Arnett, Janie Harden Fritz, and Leeanne M. Bell McManus (2009/2018) term “communication ethics …

Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele May 2019

Silence As A Strategy, Jarvis L. Steele

Honors College Theses

Understanding the struggle that is peaceful protest is a task that has two unexplored components. The first is how leaders of political movements and protest groups are able to influence the masses to not waiver in their non-violent, peaceful approach. The second is how political groups learn from the failures and successes of the previous campaigns. We are given these circumstances where governmental violence and abuse would normally lead to a retaliatory response from groups, but in order to maintain the fidelity of the movement leaders of these political protests have to protect the nonviolent approach. These are instances where …

"Something Worth Being Killed Over": The Fbi, Cultural Propaganda, And The Murder Of Fred Hampton, Ronan Goforth May 2019

"Something Worth Being Killed Over": The Fbi, Cultural Propaganda, And The Murder Of Fred Hampton, Ronan Goforth

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

The 1969 murder of local Black Panther Party (BPP) leader Fred Hampton by Chicago police officers was orchestrated by the FBI field office in the city. J. Edgar Hoover, director of the FBI, authorized Hampton’s murder on the grounds that Hampton and the BPP were violent extremists. Through infiltration of the Chicago chapter of the BPP and dissemination of cultural propaganda in Black and white newspapers, the FBI turned public opinion against the party. After Hampton’s murder, the newspaper coverage of the subsequent trial further soured public opinion. Through careful analysis of internal FBI documents, trial transcripts, newspaper coverage, and …

Assessing The Applicability Of Christian Just War Theory To The U.S. Use Of Drones In North Waziristan, Pakistan, Seneca H. Forch May 2019

Assessing The Applicability Of Christian Just War Theory To The U.S. Use Of Drones In North Waziristan, Pakistan, Seneca H. Forch

Honors College Theses

Just War Theory offers a three-tiered framework of criterion to determine whether or not conduct in various stages of war is rightly observed by state and non-state actors. These criterion are defined under Jus ad Bellum (pre-war), Jus in Bello (during war) and Jus Post Bellum (after the war). Various cultural and religious traditions have outlined its own views on just war theory, and have applied it to the use and development and of advanced war technologies. Using the Christian lens of Just War Theory, this paper seeks to find out whether or not it is a sin to use …

Autonomous Inspection And Maintenance (Aim) Crawler For Nondestructive Testing And Evaluation Of Cu-Ni Piping System In Highly Corrosive Environments, Hadi Fekrmandi May 2019

Autonomous Inspection And Maintenance (Aim) Crawler For Nondestructive Testing And Evaluation Of Cu-Ni Piping System In Highly Corrosive Environments, Hadi Fekrmandi

Florida Conference on Recent Advances in Robotics

In this paper, we describe the design, control and experimental validation of a new robotic pipe crawler for autonomous inspection of remote-to-access piping. The majority of current in-pipe inspection robots are primarily designed and suitable for large diameter pipes and unreliable for pipes less than 5 inches (12.70 cm) in diameter. The small size of the robot gives rise to problems with insufficient power, propulsion, structural integrity and difficulty of control, guidance and navigation. To address these challenges, a modular design of the crawler with a hybrid, legged- peristaltic movement has been designed and developed with the capability of navigating, …

Toward A Nuevomexicana Consciousness: An Exploration Of Identity Through Education As Manifest Through The Colonial Legacy, Mercedes V. Avila

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study is to explore the implications of the colonial legacy in informing the New Mexican Educational System in the present day. I engage a group of three self-identified young Nuevomexicana students in seeking to understand the spaces in which one must maneuver in order to thrive in an otherwise marginalizing system of Western Academia. Through a qualitative study, I hope to identify the intricacies of the New Mexican identity and the relationship these students hold with their determined homeland. By implementing the methods of interview, and participant observation in an undergraduate freshmen classroom, I will investigate …

Bacteriophages Of The Lower Urinary Tract, Andrea Garretto, Taylor Miller-Ensminger, Alan J. Wolfe, Catherine Putonti May 2019

Bacteriophages Of The Lower Urinary Tract, Andrea Garretto, Taylor Miller-Ensminger, Alan J. Wolfe, Catherine Putonti

Bioinformatics Faculty Publications

Phages are vital members of the microbiota, having critical roles in shaping bacterial metabolism and community structure. Although phages have been discovered in the urinary tract, such as phages that infect Escherichia coli, sampling them is challenging owing to low biomass, possible contamination when using non-invasive methods and the invasiveness of methods that reduce the potential for contamination. Phages could influence bladder health, but an understanding of the association between phage communities, bacterial populations and bladder health is in its infancy. However, evidence suggests that phages can defend the host against pathogenic bacteria and, therefore, modulation of the microbiome …

Ptsd Precipitating From Sexual Abuse And Combat War Exposure And Co-Morbid Disorders Of Chronic Pain, Substance Abuse And Immune Systems, Jessica Anzalone

Honors Program Theses and Projects

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a trauma and stress related disorder that some people develop after exposure to a traumatic life altering event. The person must witness the traumatic event, have the traumatic event occur to a loved one, or experience a traumatic event first hand. According to the publication of the American Psychiatric Association, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), the diagnostic criteria for the identity of PTSD must include behavioral symptoms that accompany PTSD in four diagnostic clusters; re-experiencing, avoidance, negative cognitions and mood, and arousal (American Psychological Association, 2018). Two …

Envisioning User Requirements For First-Of-A-Kind Future Rotorcraft, Christen Sushereba, Laura Militello, Katie Ernst, Julie Diiulio, Emilie Roth, Scott Scheff, William Huff Iv

International Symposium on Aviation Psychology - 2019

In this paper, we describe an ongoing effort to envision and articulate requirements for the United States Army’s Future Vertical Lift (FVL) program, specifically related to crewing. The goal of FVL is to develop a new family of rotorcraft that will incorporate advanced technologies to support new capabilities. We will discuss the challenges associated with envisioning a future system, along with approaches to design for the envisioned world with examples. We emphasize the importance of focusing on the envisioned work domain, rather than advances in new technologies. We recommend that by articulating the future work domain, requirements for new technologies …

Designing Military Cockpits To Support A Broad Range Of Personnel Body Size, Summer Lindsey, H. C. Neil Ganey, Meredith Carroll May 2019

Designing Military Cockpits To Support A Broad Range Of Personnel Body Size, Summer Lindsey, H. C. Neil Ganey, Meredith Carroll

Aeronautics Faculty Publications

The Joint Primary Aircraft Training System (JPATS) body size cases provide aircraft designers access to representative Airmen anthropometric dimensions based on a database of air force personnel. To ensure new aircraft can support a broad range of pilot body sizes, designers can reference JPATS case numbers to assure adequate access to specific controls and clearances for ejection. JPATS cases 1 and 7 were added in response to the Air Force’s goal to accommodate 95% of males and females. However, given that someone at the 90th percentile height may not have 90th percentile arm length, a far smaller percentage of accommodation …

Applying The Principle Of Proportionality To The War On Terror, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi May 2019

Applying The Principle Of Proportionality To The War On Terror, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

Richmond Public Interest Law Review

This paper aims to discuss and apply the principle of proportionality (PoP) to the War on Terror (WoT). For this, vital characteristics and conditions of the PoP will be discussed in great detail. The paper argues that notions of the “just cause,” the “reasonable hope of success,” and the “requirement of the last resort” are incorporated within the PoP. This paper also defines how the harm caused by military actions is weighed against the direct military advantage to arrive at conclusions on the proportionality or disproportionality of an attack. After discussing the theoretical grounds of the PoP, this paper tries …

Maneuver And Manipulation: On The Military Strategy Of Online Information Warfare, Tim Hwang Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

How should the defense community best organize to combat modern campaigns of propaganda and disinformation? Without a broader strategic concept of the nature of the challenge posed by these techniques, current efforts and investments run the risk of simply chasing the latest tactics without establishing enduring security. This monograph offers a way forward, proposing a cohesive strategic framework for thinking about modern information warfare and its effective conduct.

The Role And Impact Of Social Media In Protesting Oppression In Venezuela, Miriam Arias May 2019

The Role And Impact Of Social Media In Protesting Oppression In Venezuela, Miriam Arias

Open Access Theses

Venezuelans are living in the middle of a sociopolitical crisis that likely began in 1999 when Hugo Chavez began his first term as president of the country; however, Venezuela has experienced a significant downturn over the past few years, under leader Nicolas Maduro. Censorship and oppression have magnified, as have economic struggles, both of which have led to a massive exodus, in which more than 300 million people have left the country. The opposition, journalists and human rights activists have been contesting the Maduro regime and one of their tools to do so has been turning to social media platforms. …

The Mystery Of The Missing Half: The Developing Female Investigator Trope In Detective Fiction, Anthony E. Farah May 2019

The Mystery Of The Missing Half: The Developing Female Investigator Trope In Detective Fiction, Anthony E. Farah

English Department Theses

While mainstream thought considers Poe’s C. Auguste Dupin to be the first detective with Murders in the Rue Morgue his debut appearance, the female detective trope has her origin in E.T.A. Hoffman’s Das Fräulein von Scuderi. Despite her vintage, the mademoiselle’s role as investigator was overshadowed by her male counterparts in detective fiction, first in time not here being first in right. In subsequent detective fiction a la Poe, the female’s role is typically that of a body—a victim or a corpse exploited by both author and character alike, crimes against who throws a patriarchal world into disorder (e.g. …

A War Of Frustration: Saddam Hussein’S Use Of Nerve Gas On Civilians At Halabja (1988) And The American Response, Christopher Huber

Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019

The large-scale use of chemical weapons in conflict dates to World War I, but international regulations kept its use in check until Saddam Hussein’s decision to implement it throughout the Iran-Iraq War in the 1980s. The consistent use of poison gas and repeated lack of international intervention allowed Saddam to murder thousands of Kurdish citizens in Halabja on March 16, 1988. This paper admits Saddam Hussein committed heinous acts of human rights violations and war crimes, but argues he was forced to make these horrific decisions by an unyielding adversary in the Ayatollah Khomeini, abandoned by an ineffective United Nations …
