Maneuver Models Tracking Filter Of Nonballistic Near Space Targets, Qin Lei, Junlong Li

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Because hypersonic vehicles in the near space often adopt the way of nonballistic maneuver flight with characteristics of high speed and lift-to-drag ratio, flying in atmosphere for a long time, whose motion trajectories are sometimes characterized by “hopping”, their flight altitudes, flight velocities and flight accelerations change. Targets maneuver are characterized by long period maneuver, which has brought great difficulties with ground defense system for maneuvering target localization and tracking. Traditional filtering algorithms obviously cannot give accurate target state estimation, tracking performance has declined. The overview of tracking filter ways was given, introducing four typical nonballistic maneuver models of …

Particularly in Eastern Europe, the amount of interference from Russian media that is taking place is a threat to security, both on a national and EU level. In this paper, we seek to determine to what extent Russian disinformation and election …

Restoring Humanity To Those Dying Below: An Inquiry Concerning The Ethics Of Autonomous Weapons Systems, Juliette A. Pouchol Jun 2020

Restoring Humanity To Those Dying Below: An Inquiry Concerning The Ethics Of Autonomous Weapons Systems, Juliette A. Pouchol

Dartmouth College Undergraduate Theses

Today, autonomous weapons systems promise to make war more precise and effective while removing the human component from the battlefield. With the improvement of deep learning and computer vision, machines will soon be able to navigate and search through contested environments, discriminate between targets, and engage appropriately. The memoirs of drone pilots point to the evolving psychological impact of killing caused by the increase in the amount of empathy and emotional connectedness that drone pilots develop towards their target during the intimate surveillance period. A war fought without "skin-in-the-game" enables drone pilots to become better moral agents and decreases the …

Of Experts And Tokens: Mapping A Critical Race Archaeology Of Communication, Roopali Mukherjee Jun 2020

Of Experts And Tokens: Mapping A Critical Race Archaeology Of Communication, Roopali Mukherjee

Publications and Research

A disgraceful white boys’ club persists within the field of Communication. Engaging key institutional structures and epistemic formations through which the field remains so white, this essay considers the mechanisms by which critical race and gender scholars are positioned as eternally foreign, always just arriving, to the field of communication. Addressing the implications of these “epistemologies of ignorance” on the development of the discipline, this essay outlines an intellectual and institutional archeology of Communication to reveal, instead, a field marked and shaped, from the start, by ethno-racial encounter. Communication, I suggest, remains so white because its experts and leaders continue …

The Rise Of Hybrid Warfare, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi Jun 2020

The Rise Of Hybrid Warfare, Waseem Ahmad Qureshi

Notre Dame Journal of International & Comparative Law

In the twenty-first century, wars are not declared or waged conventionally; instead, conflicts are instigated by clandestine agents using cyber tools, information operations, NGOs, nonstate actors, economic tools, propaganda, ambiguity, terrorism, and insurgency or rebel movements. In hybrid warfare, the lines between peacetime and wartime and between combatants and civilians are blurred. Further, systemic aggression is imposed on a targeted state using gray zones, nonlinear warfare, unrestricted warfare, unconventional warfare, and color revolutions to avoid attribution and possible retribution for the aggression. Hybrid warfare employs a wide array of power tools, ranging from political, economic, military, and civil to informational. …

From Theory To Practice: Interdisciplinary Science In Undergraduate Education, Brie Tripp

Dissertations and Theses

Science has undergone a major transformation in the 20th and 21st centuries with new fields emerging at the intersection of disciplines, such as bioethics, bioinformatics, and chemical ecology. Yet, opportunities to engage with interdisciplinary science, and the skills needed to work in these fields, are largely absent from undergraduate biology classrooms. As a consequence, students are potentially deprived of opportunities to think interdisciplinarily and engage with real-world issues that often necessitate interdisciplinary efforts. To be informed citizens in society and forward-thinking scientists in the workforce, undergraduate students will undoubtedly benefit from exposure to these interdisciplinary science experiences.

Given these considerations, …

Before “Fire And Fury”: The Role Of Anger And Fear In U.S.–North Korea Relations, 1968–1994, Benjamin Young

Research & Publications

Since the beginning of the Korean War, the North Korean and U.S. governments have been involved in emotional warfare. From North Korea’s stated “eternal hatred” of the U.S. imperialists to Washington’s demonization of Pyongyang as an insidious Soviet pawn, emotions have been at the heart of this hostile bilateral relationship. Using three case studies (the 1968 Pueblo incident, the 1976 axe murder incident, and the 1994 nuclear crisis), I examine the ways in which the two sides have elicited emotional responses from their populations for their respective political goals. By portraying the U.S. as the source of all evilness in …

The ability to interpret, evaluate, and make data-based decisions is critical in the age of big data. Normative scripts around the use of data position them as a privileged epistemic form conferring authority through objectivity that can serve as a lever for effecting change. However, humans and materials shape how data are created and used which can reinscribe existing power relations in society at large (Van Wart, Lanouette & Parikh, 2020). Thus, research is needed on how learners can be supported to engage in critical data literacies through sociocultural perspectives. As a field intimately concerned with data-based reasoning, social justice, …
