Irrigated agriculture contributes 40% of total global food production. In the US High Plains, which produces more than 50 million tons per year of grain, as much as 90% of irrigation originates from groundwater resources, including the Ogallala aquifer. In parts of the High Plains, groundwater resources are being depleted so rapidly that they are considered nonrenewable, compromising food security. When groundwater becomes scarce, groundwater withdrawals peak, causing a subsequent peak in crop production. Previous descriptions of finite natural resource depletion have utilized the Hubbert curve. By coupling the dynamics of groundwater pumping, recharge, and crop production, Hubbert-like curves emerge, …

DNA interstrand crosslinking is a form of lesion that affects biological processes such as DNA replication and transcription. Due to this phenomenon, interstrand crosslink (ICL) agents such as cisplatin and other platinum-based compounds find application in chemotherapy. However, ICL repair is not well understood in mammalian cells and has only been characterized thoroughly for prokaryotes such as Escherichia coli. We worked to explore the utility of bis-epoxides in the investigation of ICL repair. This involves synthesizing novel bis-epoxides that could potentially induce ICLs and test their efficacy in ICL formation using a DNA repair assay. It is known that bis-epoxides …

I focused my research on modern, American hate groups. I found some criteria for early warning signs of antisemitic, bigoted and genocidal activities. I included a summary of neo-Nazi and white supremacy groups in modern American and then moved to a more specific focus on contemporary and prominent groups like Atomwaffen Division, the Proud Boys, the Vinlanders Social Club, the Base, Rise Against Movement, the Hammerskins, and other prominent antisemitic and hate-driven groups. People of color are becoming increasingly concerned with digital privacy. They are concerned about the obfuscated data collection and sharing practices of major social media plat- forms and the strong entitlement of other users in the online space to their content. This study examines how people of color conceptualize and behave to produce safety in the online space, or, in other words, digital privacy. This paper explores contemporary cultures of British military recruitment and considers the domestication of geopolitics as matters of the ephemeral (fleeting, sensory encounters), and of ephemera (everyday objects). It employs an auto/ethnographic approach toward spaces critical to recruitment–the airshow, the home and the body. Three central contributions are developed: first, building on a recent turn to the material in political geography, the paper argues that taking seriously materiality, objects, and ‘stuff’ enhances our understanding of the connections between geopolitical, militarised and everyday; second, deploying a notion of the geopolitical social, it explores the geopolitical as it is situated in everyday …

The reality of space as an arena for international geopolitical and military competition has been around for decades in scholarly literature. Locus: The Seton Hall Journal of Undergraduate Research

In the midst of chaos and destruction, Modernism brought a wave of surmounting opposition against the constructions of literary (and non-literary) art forms. Wallace Stevens (1879-1955) is just one example of the resistance to traditional forms as well as opposition to fatalistic worldviews of the time. Pieces like "Sunday Morning" and "The High-Toned Old Christian Woman" show a "godless universe" that is substituted by art and the mundane movements of everyday life. Stevens finds such replacements by exploring the "nature of poetry" and by extension refocusing the meaning of death in a life surrounded by it.

This paper examines how shifting racial relations between whites and minorities in the United States affected the conclusions of U.S. historians analyzing racially motivated atrocities committed in the Philippine-American War. This article studies historical literature on the War written between 1900 and 1989 and observes how changing racial relations impacted the ways in which historians were either willing to acknowledge the atrocities U.S. soldiers committed against Filipino fighters and civilians or dismiss them completely as fabrications constructed by the American media. Conventional academic discussion vis-à-vis America’s Special Operations Forces, is largely focused at the tactical and operational level of analysis. This means the emphasis on explaining outcomes is placed on personnel (recruiting, assessing, selecting, and training), cutting edge equipment, innovative tactics, or advanced command and control procedures. Addressing this long-standing trend, I argue that factors well beyond the widely accepted explanations for success or failure are in play. In 2017, for the first time since the end of the Cold War, none of the capability targets identified in NATO’s quadrennial NATO Defence Planning Process (NDPP) were left on the negotiating table. Previously, capability targets were identified by the alliance’s secretariat, but they remained unfilled as allies failed to assume responsibility for them.

This monograph examines the 2014–18 iteration of the NDPP, which represented a stunning turnaround in transatlantic burden sharing. The analysis reveals a combination of factors—the changed threat environment, political pressure from Washington, and the role of “policy entrepreneurs” working within NATO—best explain the alliance’s success in …
