London And Washington—Maintaining Naval Cooperation Despite Strategic Differences During Operation Earnest Will, Richard A. Mobley
London And Washington—Maintaining Naval Cooperation Despite Strategic Differences During Operation Earnest Will, Richard A. Mobley
Naval War College Review
Recently declassified British records reveal London’s misgivings about America’s 1987 reflagging and escorting of Kuwaiti tankers amid the Iran-Iraq War. This early case study illustrates the challenges of conducting coalition warfare in the Middle East, even with a close, cooperative partner. National-level differences revealed surmountable fissures in coordinating naval strategies and operations, yet the benefits of the relationship justified the friction encountered.

The Middle Kingdom Returns To The Sea, While America Turns Its Back—How China Came To Dominate The Global Maritime Industry, And The Implications For The World, Christopher J. Mcmahon
Naval War College Review
China soon virtually will control the global seagoing supply chain, with staggering consequences for the United States, its allies, and the world. As a nation dependent on maritime transportation for its economy and the movement of its military forces, the United States must take immediate, decisive steps to promote the reestablishment of a healthy and competitive U.S. maritime industry.

One Approach, Two Results—The French Army, The U.S. Marines, And The Frontal Assault During The World Wars, Ethan S. Rafuse
Naval War College Review
The French army’s 1940 campaign was disastrous, whereas the U.S. Marine Corps cracked the problem of making an opposed amphibious landing, keying victory over imperial Japan. But despite these military organizations’ different approaches, a closer examination reveals that the two services shared more in common in the problems they faced and the answers they developed than their operational results suggest.

The 1988 Blues—Admirals, Activists, And The Development Of The Chinese Maritime Identity, Andrew Rhodes
Naval War College Review
In 1988, the views of the prodemocracy creators of a popular documentary had little in common with the PLAN leadership’s views regarding China’s governance, but there is surprising overlap in the way the two groups were “selling the sea,” helping to explain a critical moment in the evolution of China’s maritime identity and commitment to maritime power.
The Transformation Of The Israel Defense Forces, Avi Jager
The Transformation Of The Israel Defense Forces, Avi Jager
Naval War College Review
Recent major changes to the Israel Defense Forces that reduced infantry, armor, and artillery elements in response to the rise of nonstate adversaries mean that in any future multifront war it will be much more difficult for IDF ground forces to capture areas in the Gaza Strip, southern Lebanon, Syria, and elsewhere.
Cultural Challenges For Israeli Sea Power In The Eastern Mediterranean, Samuel Helfont
Cultural Challenges For Israeli Sea Power In The Eastern Mediterranean, Samuel Helfont
Naval War College Review
The strategic-military significance of the recent discovery of extensive natural gas fields in the eastern Mediterranean works against Israel’s traditional reluctance to become a sea power. But any “turn to the sea” will require adopting a broad national and strategic mind-set in the face of cultural constraints that keep Israel tied to the land.

Laredo Veterans And Their Recollections Of The Early Years Of The War In Vietnam, 1960-1965, Enrique Javier Sauceda
Laredo Veterans And Their Recollections Of The Early Years Of The War In Vietnam, 1960-1965, Enrique Javier Sauceda
Theses and Dissertations
The Vietnam War remains one of the most unpopular wars in United States History. Unfortunately, veterans from this time period are beginning to fade into history without telling their stories. Although abundant stories are available on the experiences of Vietnam veterans, there are few works on Hispanic veterans from the Vietnam War Era. Why is that? The contributions made by the Hispanic community in the armed services continue to strengthen our military. This research focuses on the stories of four Laredo veterans who served during the Vietnam War Era. Three men served overseas in the Vietnam conflict prior to 1965 …

All The King’S Horses: Stable Administration In New Kingdom Egypt, Tessa Genevieve David Litecky
All The King’S Horses: Stable Administration In New Kingdom Egypt, Tessa Genevieve David Litecky
Theses and Dissertations
Horses were an important part of Egyptian society during the New Kingdom as tools of warfare, status symbols of the elite, and an emblem of the power of kingship. However, little is known about how these animals were trained and cared for, or who was working in horse stables and their roles. There are no texts or images that explicitly explain methods of horse management. Therefore, this topic has been generally overlooked in the literature. This thesis combines two threads of evidence to create a more complete picture of the organization, purpose, and function of horse stables and the treatment …
Christian Dignity And The Overlapping Consensus, Frederick Mark Gedicks
Christian Dignity And The Overlapping Consensus, Frederick Mark Gedicks
BYU Law Review
This Article rejects arguments by Christian leaders, scholars, and others who lament the secularization of the West and urge Christian dignity as the foundation of universal human rights. It argues instead that only a secular conception of dignity free of Christian metaphysics can create an overlapping consensus in support of human rights.
Part I describes the roots of Christian dignity in medieval theology and status. Part II briefly recounts how the Renaissance and Enlightenment re-centered the end of dignity from knowing God to knowing oneself, while the Reformation's extension of original sin to the intellect left Catholicism as the primary …

Writing Gender In Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction, Li Guo
Writing Gender In Early Modern Chinese Women's Tanci Fiction, Li Guo
Comparative Cultural Studies
Women’s tanci, or “plucking rhymes,” are chantefable narratives written by upper-class educated women from seventeenth-century to early twentieth-century China. Writing Gender in Early Modern Chinese Women’s Tanci Fiction offers a timely study on early modern Chinese women’s representations of gender, nation, and political activism in their tanci works before and after the Taiping Rebellion (1850 to 1864), as well as their depictions of warfare and social unrest.
Women tanci authors’ redefinition of female exemplarity within the Confucian orthodox discourses of virtue, talent, chastity, and political integrity could be bourgeoning expressions of female exceptionalism and could have foreshadowed protofeminist ideals …
Documentary Transformations And Cultural Context, Robert Pagès
Documentary Transformations And Cultural Context, Robert Pagès
Proceedings from the Document Academy
This article is a translation of one originally published in 1948 in Review of Documentation. The article examines the relationship between documents, broadly defined, and culture. More specifically, it examines the connections between experience, reason and the stability of documents as media technologies evolve over time.

Introduction To Robert Pagès’ “Documentary Transformations And Cultural Context”, Michael K. Buckland
Proceedings from the Document Academy
Robert Pagès (1919-2007) was an anarchist activist who later became director of a major social psychology research laboratory. Between these roles he was a student in documentation established in Paris by Suzanne Briet and others at the Conservatoire National des Arts et Métiers. In 1947 while he was a student of documentation Pagès submitted a thesis entitled “Transformations documentaires et milieu culturel” (Documentary transformations and cultural context) which was published as an article in the Review of Documentation in 1948. A key theme was that documentation is to culture what machinery is to industry. This introduction situates and explains some …

Factors Controlling Circulation At The Terminus Of A Shallow Seagrass-Dominated Estuary, Fort Desoto Bay, West-Central Florida, Charles Gray Vickery
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Fort DeSoto Bay is a shallow seagrass-dominated estuary located landward of Mullet Key that is home to the most extensive seagrass beds in all of Tampa Bay. During a period of development in the 1950s and early 1960s, the bay underwent extensive physical modifications, including the construction of earthen causeways and dredged channels, which altered the bathymetry of the seafloor and changed natural circulation patterns. The stagnation of water in the southern bay and increased estuarine residence time led to elevated summer temperatures, reduced dissolved oxygen levels, and die-offs of seagrasses. Two 40-foot circulation bridges were installed on each causeway …

1d Conditional Generative Adversarial Network For Spectrum-To-Spectrum Translation Of Simulated Chemical Reflectance Signatures, Cara Murphy, John Kerekes
1d Conditional Generative Adversarial Network For Spectrum-To-Spectrum Translation Of Simulated Chemical Reflectance Signatures, Cara Murphy, John Kerekes
Articles
The classification of trace chemical residues through active spectroscopic sensing is challenging due to the lack of physics-based models that can accurately predict spectra. To overcome this challenge, we leveraged the field of domain adaptation to translate data from the simulated to the measured domain for training a classifier. We developed the first 1D conditional generative adversarial network (GAN) to perform spectrum-to-spectrum translation of reflectance signatures. We applied the 1D conditional GAN to a library of simulated spectra and quantified the improvement in classification accuracy on real data using the translated spectra for training the classifier. Using the GAN-translated library, …

The Manifestation Of Total War In The Mexican Revolution., Craig Verniest
The Manifestation Of Total War In The Mexican Revolution., Craig Verniest
SUURJ: Seattle University Undergraduate Research Journal
This manuscript examines the manifestation of total war in the Mexican Revolution and analyzes why such an extreme form of warfare occurred. “Total war” refers to a mass armed conflict that is unrestricted in the weapons used, the territory or combatants involved, and the objectives pursued, as well as involving the complete mobilization of civilian and military resources for the war effort. In the Mexican Revolution, this was expressed in three main aspects: the implementation of excessive force by and against combatants, the perpetration of extreme violence, whether intentionally or unintentionally, against non-combatants, and the appropriation of civilian resources, which …
Mapping Plastic Pollution In The Amite Watershed, Louisiana, Gourav Divan
Mapping Plastic Pollution In The Amite Watershed, Louisiana, Gourav Divan
LSU Master's Theses
Microplastics have quickly emerged as a concerning pollutant in both freshwater and marine environments. Their recent discovery means that their impacts are still being studied, however, it is important to continuously monitor their concentrations. An important conduit of plastic pollution to marine environments are rivers and streams. Previous models have estimated the transport of plastics from land to sea in many parts of the world. Most of these models, however, have been conducted at coarse spatial resolutions that make it difficult to establish tractable management programs to minimize this impact. Here, a previously existing model was applied to model for …

Undercover Heroines: The Role Of Women In The Oss, Alexander Pearson
Undercover Heroines: The Role Of Women In The Oss, Alexander Pearson
MAD-RUSH Undergraduate Research Conference
Women played significant roles in the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) during World War II. Aline Griffith’s memoir The Spy Wore Red: My Adventures as an Undercover Agent in World War II recounts her work in preparation for the southern invasion of France following D-day, known as Operation Dragoon. Other written accounts from other female agents indicate that the leadership in Washington wanted women to fulfill traditional gender roles. For example, William J. Donovan stated that women in the OSS should be “behind desks and filing cases in Washington, invisible apron strings of an organization which touched every theater of …
