No Soldier Left Behind? Breaking The Silence On Military Service, Values And Identity In Israel, Lina Tuschling
No Soldier Left Behind? Breaking The Silence On Military Service, Values And Identity In Israel, Lina Tuschling
Doctor of International Conflict Management Dissertations
This dissertation explores the relationship between observed incidents and perceptions of value violation or confirmation among Israeli soldiers. Through content analysis of 900 testimonies, the work explores the intersection of social identity, military ethics and nonviolent movements. The data show that many soldiers do not see their tasks as supporting the overall mission of keeping their country and nation safe, leading to a decline in motivation and sense of purpose. Further, deeper reflections on whether actions on the ground are in line with proposed national values result in incidents of role conflict, individual cognitive dissonance and vicarious dissonance.

Design And Engine Implementation Of Submarine Combat System Simulation Based On Lvc, Jinping Wu, Minghua Lu, Changyou Xue
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: Submarine combat system simulation is one of the key and most important content in submarine combat simulation. On the basis of LVC simulation technology, practicing simulation-as-a-service idea, the LVC integration simulation method of submarine combat system is proposed and the LVC integration simulation environment is constructed. The composition and relationship of LVC simulation system are researched. The compositional structure of LVC simulation engine was designed. Based on the component design and development specifications in Java/EJB technological infrastructure, in use of software component technology, the simulation engine components are designed and implemented. The LVC integration simulation of submarine combat system …
The Bodies Of The Condemned: The Return Of The Body As The Object Of State Power, Kenzo E. Okazaki
The Bodies Of The Condemned: The Return Of The Body As The Object Of State Power, Kenzo E. Okazaki
Swarthmore Undergraduate History Journal
This paper provides a historical analysis of the genealogy of American policing and attempts to explain the return of state power to individual bodies. It argues that this return was informed by French counterinsurgency strategies in Algeria. Through engagement with Foucault's analysis of power and surveillance practices, it aims to shed light on and help us better understand and combat police brutality today.
An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann
An Unexpected Study: A Response To Ordway's "Tolkien’S Modern Reading", Maureen F. Mann
Journal of Tolkien Research
Abstract for An Unexpected Study
This essay review interrogates the polemical style of rhetoric in Holly Ordway’s Tolkien’s Modern Reading. It critiques her use of a fictional narrative to represent an adolescent Tolkien, her intertextual criteria, and her dating of Victorian fantasists and their historical moment. It questions her claims about entrenched notions concerning Tolkien, her use of evidence, and her assumptions about her audience. It concludes that Ordway is less interested in Tolkien’s contemporary reading and more interested in creating a new narrative about Tolkien the author.
Shrew Or Sure? Rethinking Power In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Devenny Denise Lupear
Shrew Or Sure? Rethinking Power In Shakespeare's The Taming Of The Shrew, Devenny Denise Lupear
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the difference between Shakespeare’s written work The Taming of the Shrew and twentieth-century film director Franco Zeffirelli’s adaptation in 1967, specifically the final outcome in the issue of power of Katherine’s character. While some scholars consider Shakespeare a proto-feminist who endows Katherine with cleverness, wit, and cunning to secretly tame Petruchio in order to gain personal freedom within the walls of a forced marriage, Zeffirelli denies Katherine dignity in the face of public humiliation and physical violence. Furthermore, Zeffirelli also undermines Shakespeare’s progressive agenda by perpetuating an oppressive narrative against women using twentieth-century film as his medium …

The Mythology Of Grotesque Women In The Short Stories Of Rosario Ferré And Elena Garro: "It's Not Me, It's You, Yomira Jatzin Varela Guadiana
Theses and Dissertations
The short stories of Latin American writers like Rosario Ferré and Elena Garro are molded by the frameworks in which they have been constructed. Literature, far from being disconnected by the impositions of borders, geographical or otherwise, remains allied to the frameworks and ideologies that paved the way to its inception. In particular, countries in what is known as the Global South share parallel histories and are thus linked by the structures they have in common. The literature of the U.S. South is connected not merely to the nation itself but to other entities outside of it like the Caribbean …
"As Vigilant As Argus": A Military History Of The Irish And Tejano Tories Of The Texas Revolution, Jonathan Woodward
"As Vigilant As Argus": A Military History Of The Irish And Tejano Tories Of The Texas Revolution, Jonathan Woodward
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis analyzes the Irish and Tejano Tories of the Texas Revolution from a military perspective. Emphasizing ideas of historical tradition and heritage, this work examines the Tories as continuations of the Wild Geese, soldados de cuera, and compañías volantes. This is done through an examination of Irish and Tejano Tory motivation in supporting Mexico and military participation in the Texas Revolution. This work also examines ideas of economic opportunity, social acceptance, personal conservatism, distrust of foreign settlement, and fear of invasion or reprisal as factors in Toryism or loyalism. Militarily, this thesis examines Tory military roles alongside Mexican forces …
Coordination Geometries In Metallobundles Enforcing Oxidative And Hydrolytic Catalysis And Designing Biomaterials For Use As Antimicrobials, Jennifer Yoon
Dissertations - ALL
De novo protein design permits discovery of intricate folds and functions emulating natural enzymes in simpler, yet robust model constructs. Helical bundles serve as premier scaffolds to incorporate diverse reactivities from oxidative, reductive, to hydrolytic transformations observed in much grander O2-utilizing metalloproteins such as radical-generating ribonucleotide reductases and catalases. One notable family of de novo proteins is the Due Ferri or DF series of four-helix bundles providing a dinuclear site for metal incorporation and are amenable for tailoring active site reactivity. As reactive oxygen species and radical-based intermediates are prevalent and necessary for steering life-essential processes through reactive radicals stabilized …
The Significance Of Significance: Decolonizing Cultural Resource Management Practices In The Upper Midwest, Justin Allen Woods
The Significance Of Significance: Decolonizing Cultural Resource Management Practices In The Upper Midwest, Justin Allen Woods
Theses and Dissertations
Indigenous communities across the United States were coerced and tricked into signing treaties that ceded significant portions of their ancestral lands. This land holds cultural value to the tribal members, however academics and archaeologists who do not often shared these values analyze these landscapes to determine their cultural and historical significance, a decision-making process mandated by federal and often state law that has important economic, political, and social consequences. This paper analyzes examples from one context, cultural resource management (CRM) projects in the Northern Great Lakes Region of Wisconsin, Michigan, North and South Dakota and Minnesota, as a case study …
U.S. Recognition Of A Commander’S Duty To Punish War Crimes, Brian Finucane
U.S. Recognition Of A Commander’S Duty To Punish War Crimes, Brian Finucane
International Law Studies
This article explores the United States' recognition of the doctrine of command responsibility. The doctrine has been invoked by those alleging that President Trump’s pardons of U.S. personnel convicted or accused of war crimes could amount to war crimes themselves. The article focuses on a commander’s duty to punish war crimes by his subordinates. It examines the United States’ past recognition of the duty to punish as an element of command responsibility under the law of war. The principle that a commander has an obligation to punish war crimes by his subordinates is not a progressive development of the law …

Immodest Immortality: Emperor Maximilian I'S Artistic Program And The Ambraser Heldenbuch, 1504-1519, Jessica Cochran
History ETDs
Maximilian I (r. 1493-1519) utilized various forms of artistic and literary media throughout his reign to control his public image after his death. This thesis focuses on a manuscript project that has historically received little scholarly attention. The Ambraser Heldenbuch, produced between 1504 and 1517, preserves German heroic epics, many of which would otherwise be lost today. The manuscript has been highly valued for its literary and linguistic significance, but this thesis argues that the entire project sheds light on Maximilian’s plan to immortalize not only his own reputation, but also that of his family. This thesis focuses on …
Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper
Sisters Supporting Sisters: Photovoice & Diabetes Discourse Among Church-Based Women In New Mexico, Nina Mock Cooper
Communication ETDs
Within the expansive literature on diabetes in other disciplines, the communication lens focuses on the biomedical perspective and emphasizes doctor-patient and patient-provider relations. While there are limited studies that focus on the psychosocial aspect of diabetes morbidity, there is a gap in the existing literature across disciplines on communication about diabetes using both qualitative and participatory methods that are church-based. Because diabetes disproportionately and adversely impacts communities of color that report high levels of religious influence, there is an dire need for more effective interventions to ameliorate this chronic illness that causes high levels of morbidity and mortality.

The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
The Transformation Of Identity In Early Medieval England: Continuity, Disruption, And Creolization, Michael Sean Limmer
History ETDs
The period following Rome’s administrative withdrawal from Britain (c. 410 CE) has sparked intense debate for centuries, spawning a variety of theories concerning ethnic identity and the nature of cultural exchange on the island. Presently, the very nature of the term “Anglo-Saxon” itself is at the center of these discussions. This thesis examines historical, archaeological, and genetic evidence to cast a light on who constituted the people of Britain during this migration period through to the time of Alfred, and to what extent creolization might have played out. Ultimately, the evidence from this period suggests that ethnic identities cannot reasonably …

Making Of Modern Tampa: A City Of The New South, 1885-1911, Durward Long
Florida Historical Quarterly
Historican have yet to devote the thought and research to urbanization in the South that the subject deserves. Coulter’s brief attention to the growth and role of cities and towns in the Reconstruction era, Van Woodward’s similarly brief concern with cities in his Origins of the New South, Ezell’s short treatment in his textbook survey, Park’s interpretative chapter in Couch’s Culture in the South, and Vance’s edited work on the recent South nearly exhaust the list of serious histories which offer even slight leads about southern urbanization. A survey of the Journal of Southern History and state historical journals is …
Intervention And Reaction: Florida Newspapers And United States Entry In World War I, C. Peter Ripley
Intervention And Reaction: Florida Newspapers And United States Entry In World War I, C. Peter Ripley
Florida Historical Quarterly
Florida newspapers largely ignored the war in Europe until 1917. In early January there was only an occasional mention of the international situation except for brief reports on the fighting. But by mid-February the possibility, and in some cases the inevitability, of United States involvement in the war was a major editorial topic. A month later a majority of the papers favored America’s joining the crusade to make the world “safe for democracy.”
Florida Frontier Incidents During The 1850s, George C. Bittle
Florida Frontier Incidents During The 1850s, George C. Bittle
Florida Historical Quarterly
From a military viewpoint Florida’s frontier at the beginning of the 1850s was relatively quiet. There was no significant warfare, but the Indian question was far from settled. Governor Thomas Brown’s message to the Florida legislature in 1850 repeated many previous statements and complained about the almost total disorganization of Florida’s militia. Governor Brown typically blamed this situation on the current militia law’s unwieldy nature. However, it should be noted, that Florida military officials had not made the militia returns required by the federal government since 1845. There would seem to be some question therefore, concerning the state’s desire to …

A Threatening Heresy: Cathar And Protestant Identity Against Catholicism In France Between The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) And The French Wars Of Religion (1562-1598), Jonathan Wright
History ETDs
The Albigensian Crusade (1209-1229) and the French Wars of Religion (1562- 1598) were two of the most violent moments in French history. Both involved the persecution of a perceived minority by Catholic forces, and both left irreparable scars on the area of Occitania in the south of France. Battles along river fronts and the clandestine boat smuggling of heretics were actions undertaken by a heretical Cathar group that confronted orthodox religion. Water became a critical part of the creation of a persecuted minority in Occitania. Intensifying Cathar heresy led to increased violence in the Wars of Religion as Catholic aggression …
Euphemism And Jus Cogens, G. Alex Sinha
Euphemism And Jus Cogens, G. Alex Sinha
Northwestern Journal of Human Rights
Jus cogens norms of international law encompass the most stringent prohibitions of the law of nations. They reflect a global—and typically moral—consensus about impermissible conduct so complete and forceful that no derogation is permissible under any circumstances. Yet states derogate nevertheless. Lacking any valid legal justification for violating jus cogens norms, derogating states instead seek to euphemize their unlawful conduct. Doing so appears at a glance to be a calculated choice that allows States to have their cake and eat it too—to acknowledge the peremptory norms that purportedly bind all sovereigns while acting freely in violation of those norms by …

To the Land of Unlimited Opportunities tell the storiies of the Finkbeiner and Gaiser families from the late 1700's until today.
To the Land of Unlimited Opportunities, ends with the deaths of John and Lydia Finkbeiner. This hardly ends our story. Their seven sons and daughters-in-law gave them thirty-two grandchildren, all but two reached adulthood. Sadly, their only daughter Esther passed away as a young adult in 1926. Five of the seven sons of John and Lydia became ministers of the gospel while two remained on the land and increased the size of the farm over the years. For many …

Terrorism And Counter-Terrorism: A Game Theoretic Approach., Aditya Bhan Dr.
Doctoral Theses
Microeconomic concepts are often applied to analyze the phenomenon of terrorism, and gametheoretic frameworks are commonly applied throughout the existing literature. This is unsurprising, since real-world scenarios involving strategic interactions are best formulated using game theory because such formulations not only provide deep insights into the web of incentives and disincentives within which each player operates and consequent predictive paradigms, but also enable the creation of policy architectures based on anticipation of players‟ actions and/or alteration of players‟ incentives/disincentives to encourage/discourage certain behavioural outcomes. This thesis also applies game-theoretic frameworks to analyze some issues within the domain of terrorism and …

Developing Presencing Leadership Acumen Through Five Negative Capability Informed Practices, Olen Gunnlaugson
The Journal of Values-Based Leadership
In the face of myriad local and global challenges that humanity is currently facing, it is becoming clear that the future of leadership depends increasingly on a leader’s capacity to make effective discernments and interventions that confront these deeper complex issues at their very root source. To advance progress towards this aim, this article makes the case for cultivating presencing leadership which involves connecting with, and leading from, the hidden source of optimal and sustainable forms of action.

Gulf War Illness (GWI) is a chronic multi-symptomatic illness that is associated with fatigue, pain, cognitive deficits, and gastrointestinal disturbances and presents a significant challenge to treat in clinics. Our previous studies show a role of an altered Gut-Brain axis pathology in disease development and symptom persistence in GWI. The present study utilizes a mouse model of GWI to study the role of a labdane diterpenoid andrographolide (AG) to attenuate the Gut-Brain axis-linked pathology. Results showed that AG treatment in mice (100 mg/kg) via oral gavage restored bacteriome alterations, significantly increased probiotic bacteria , , and , the genera that …
