Tanzania-Zambia Railway: Escape Route From Neocolonial Control?, Alvin W. Wolfe

Anthropology Faculty Publications

Case histories describes the joint attempt of Tanzania and Zambia to escape from the supranational network that controlled southern Africa, by expanding links across the Indian Ocean by building a railroad that would give Central Africa a way to export minerals outside the control of the southern African system. Author warned "the extraction and processing of ores is, in all circumstances, an interdependent part of a larger scale world industrial system" (p. 102).

Postilla

Buccanodon olivaceum ulugurensis and Viridubucco leucomystax meridionalis (both Capitonidae), new subspecies, are described on the basis of morphological characters. Evidence is presented that Dendropicos fuscescens (Vieillot) and Dendropicos lafresnayi Malherbe ( = D. f. lafresnayi Malherbe) are distinct taxa. The distribution of Smithornis capensis (Smith) is redefined based on an examination of a large series of specimens from eastern Africa. Smithornis capensis meinertzhageni van Someren, S. c. suahelicus Grote, S. c. shimba van Someren, and S. c. chyulu van Someren are reinstated as valid subspecies and a key to their identification is given. Macrodipteryx longipennis (Shaw) is recorded as new …

The Alien's Access To Local Remedies: The African Commonwealth Countries' Experience, Ivan L. Head

Vanderbilt Law Review

Of the 27 members of the Commonwealth of Nations, 11 are located on the continent of Africa. They range in size from Nigeria, with an area of 356,000 square miles and a population of 60 million, to The Gambia, with an area of 4,000 square miles and a population of 350,000 persons. Prior to 1957 all of the 11 States were colonies of the British crown. In little more than a decade they have all gained political independence-one hundred and six million people residing in autonomous communities which are, in the words of the 1926 Balfour Declaration, "equal in status, …
