Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
East Africa's wildlife is justly famous. This study examines the difficulty of preserving large numbers of wild animals in societies committed to widespread and rapid economic development. In Kenya the colonial administration had to devise a policy that would enable a rapidly expanding European settler community to live side by side with hundreds of thousands of potentially destructive wild animals. As far as Uganda was concerned, the authorities had to prevent the country's elephant herds from destroying agricultural crops without destroying them. Tanganyika's situation was even more complex. A large number of European and African farmers believed that the only …

The Lutheran-Catholic Dialogue: The Year 1980, Avery Dullee
Institute of Liturgical Studies Occasional Papers
(Excerpt)
Let me begin on a somewhat personal note. In the days when I grew up in New York and New England, I seem to have been surrounded by Protestants of many species, Episcopalian, Presbyterian, Methodist, Congregationalist, and others. Occasionally I ran into a Roman Catholic, but almost no one I knew was a Lutheran. Luther for me was a figure in history books. Only in the Navy during World War II did I come to know a Lutheran really well, and since he was a devout student of the Bible and of theology, the two of us had an …

An Economic Analysis Of Damages And Other Losses By Ticks And Tick Borne Disease Particulary In Relation To East Coast Fever (Ecf), Francis Mwega Mwaura
All Master’s Theses
Ticks and Tick-borne diseases are a major impediment to the developrrent of the livestock sector in Kenya. They cause significant production losses through mortality, impair productivity of surviving anirrals, and discourage the genetic improvement of cattle in the high potential areas. Of the tick-borne diseases, ECF is the most important. No vaccine or drug has been adopted for widespread field use against the disease, and its control relies on the application of acaricides on animals to control the tick population.Indigenous cattle in endemic areas have developed partial .immunity to the main tick-borne diseases. It is the genetically improved cattle that …
The Context And Mission Of Canadian Lutheranism, Roger W. Nostbakken
The Context And Mission Of Canadian Lutheranism, Roger W. Nostbakken
Consensus
The mission of the Church can be understood only in the context of our time. This context is one of skepticism and failed idealism; of egocentricity, of religious pluralism and secular religion. The needs confronting the Church are re-evangelisation, the challenge of new conservatism and the issues of human rights and social justice. The opportunities for mission in Canada call for a reassertion of Biblical and confessional theology, i.e., a theology of grace, of Word and Sacrament, of the Church and of worship. The opportunity of Lutheran merger is one we must now seize as we carry forth the Church's …

The Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) is one of the largest not-for-profit private health care networks in the developing world. Operating over 200 medical facilities and primary health care programmes, AKHS serves more than two million people annually in Pakistan, India, Kenya, Tanzania, and Bangladesh. Established on the foundation of preventive health initiatives led by the Aga Khan and his predecessors since the late 19th century, the network integrates community-based health programmes with advanced hospitals, focusing on disease prevention, public health promotion, and affordable curative care.
Teaching The Bible To Black Africans : (Toward A Methodological Approach To Bible Teaching Applied To The Beti Tribes Of South-Cameroon), Joseph Nkou
Dissertations
Problem. This study is concerned with methods of teaching the Bible in Black Africa and particularly among the Beti tribes of South Cameroon. The Gospel message has been brought to the Beti people through the ministry of Western instructors. Some have claimed their teaching to be irrelevant to the Africans. It appeared necessary, then, to find out in what way that teaching was irrelevant to Beti people and to suggest positive methods which could be applied in order to facilitate the Beti grasp of the Christian message and, consequently, to predispose them to a full and inner acceptance o f …
Swelling Of Polymer-Oligomer Particles, Habiba Rajabu Mfutakamba
Swelling Of Polymer-Oligomer Particles, Habiba Rajabu Mfutakamba
All Master’s Theses
A quantitative study of the swelling capacity of polymer-oligomer particles, and the rate of transport of slightly water soluble compound 1, e.g. chlorobenzene, from bulk phase to the particles has been carried out. A much higher swelling capacity was attained when compound 1 was subdivided (before it was added to the swelling experiments) than when it was added as a bulk at the same experimental conditions. It is shown that the increased swelling capacity when compound 1 is subdivided may lead to a much higher value of the equilibrium swelling with compound 1. In previous studies and at the beginning …
