Spermatogenesis In The Mosquito Eretmapodites Quinquevittatus, Robert Daniel Hunter Jr. Jan 1987

Spermatogenesis In The Mosquito Eretmapodites Quinquevittatus, Robert Daniel Hunter Jr.

College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations (1964–2006)

Various stages of spermatogenesis in pupal testes of the mosquito Eretmapodites quinquevittatus (Theobald) were determined by 2% 1acto-aceto-orcein and silver nitrate staining techniques. Temporal relationships of stages were demonstrated and behavior and appearance of meiotic chromosomes were described.

Pupal testes were most active meiotically for the first 12-14 hours after onset of pupation. The prepachytene stage of leptotene and a nucleolus were observed with the use of silver nitrate staining. Experimental observations demonstrated the first spermatids and visible mature sperm at 6-8 and 18 hours, respectively, after onset on pupation. E. quinquevittatus mean sperm size was reported (head = 50 …

Advancement In Maritime Technology And Its Impact On Safety, Gilbert Luke Mokiwa

World Maritime University Dissertations

This paper is entitled " Advancement in Maritime Technology and its impact on safety". In 1964 Diebold stated " THE EFFECTS OF THE TECHNICAL REVOLUTION WE ARE NOW LIVING THROUGH WILL BE DEEPER THAN ANY SOCIAL CHANGE WE HAVE EXPERIENCED BEFORE “ It is twenty three years now since Diebold gave the statement and he surely could not be more right if a close look is conducted on what is happening today. This paper is written with the aim of bringing to the people's awareness, the current level of advanced maritime technology and its impact on safety. The methodology used has …

Production Of Blanking Circles And Dies - An Appropriate Method, V Bhandari Dec 1986

Production Of Blanking Circles And Dies - An Appropriate Method, V Bhandari

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A large important blanking die for production of multiwick stoves oil tanks was damaged beyond repair during normal maintenance. A replacement die could not be made available immediately. Initially an alternative blank production system based upon the adaptation of the inhouse and locally available tools was set up. Subsequently a temporary low cost and a permanent replacement blanking die was designed, developed and manufactured out of pad welding of mild steel plate. Recommendations have been drawn in light of the experiences gained in the deployment of these appropriate methods.

Towards The Development Of A Seed Minimum Tillage Planting, G Mutoizi Dec 1986

Towards The Development Of A Seed Minimum Tillage Planting, G Mutoizi

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Some advantages of minimum tillage compared to conventional tillage. systems are given. An evaluation of current minimum tillage planters is then made identifying two major problems namely the handling of trash. which detracts from making a continuous furrow of uniform depth, and unnecessary power Consumption When making this continuous furrow in spaced planting of seeds. Then the design, manufacture and development of a rig type of a seed injector for use in precision-drilling of a typical tropical geed is presented. It is to inject the Seed using rotary sleeve Valve in which is tractor drawn. Preliminary field testing of the …

The Design Of A Resonant Post Waveguide Filter, Ramjee Prasad Dec 1986

The Design Of A Resonant Post Waveguide Filter, Ramjee Prasad

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

A seven stage, quarter-wave coupled, single post, resonant cavity type waveguide filter has been studied. The posts are placed according to the Tchebyscheff distribution. The filter is designed and fabricated to meet the following specifications: Centre frequency: 9.31 GHz, Number of stages = 7, 3-dB bandwidth = 300 Mhz, Ripple tolerance in the passband = 0.5 dB. The frequency behaviour of this filter has been experimentally studied and is in close agreement with the specifications.

Distributive Mixing Performance Of Rubber Internal Mixers, B Mutagahywa Dec 1986

Distributive Mixing Performance Of Rubber Internal Mixers, B Mutagahywa

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Results of experiments to study the distributive mixing performance of Internal mixers are reported in this paper. Distributive mixing was assessed by monitoring the uniformity of sulphur distribution throughout rubber mixes subjected to a range of rotor revolutions. The results indicate that distributive mixing in a well controlled Internal mixer is rapid and unlikely to be a source of mix variability.

Joseph E. Harris: Forging Links On The Diaspora Trail, Harriet Jackson Scarupa

New Directions

At a conference center on the grounds of an old coffee plantation in the small mountain town of Sasaima, Colombia, 27people have gathered for what is billed as an International Seminar on Research and Teaching in Afro-South American Studies. The event is co-hosted by Howard University’s history department and three South American research centers, with financing provided by a grant from the Ford Foundation. Participants include five Howard representatives and Afro-South American researchers, teachers and community leaders from Colombia, Venezuela and Peru. Their purpose here is two-fold: to talk about ways Howard University scholars and Afro-South American scholars can work …

Human Rights In Africa: Observations On The Implications Of Economic Priority, Minasse Haile Apr 1986

Human Rights In Africa: Observations On The Implications Of Economic Priority, Minasse Haile

Articles

The article argues that the failure of economic development strategies in Africa is deeply intertwined with the denial of civil and political rights, particularly for the rural poor. It critiques the "economic rights first" approach, which prioritizes material needs over democratic participation, and contends that such an approach is both principled and practically flawed. The analysis emphasizes that without civil and political rights, development strategies like the Basic Needs Strategy (BNS) are unlikely to succeed, as they require equitable distribution of wealth and benefits, which undemocratic regimes often fail to implement. The article also examines the limitations of both Afro-Marxist …

Rodent Control In East Africa, William R. Smythe Mar 1986

Rodent Control In East Africa, William R. Smythe

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 12th (1986)

The nations of East Africa consist of Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. They encompass a widely varied topography, from coral strands to snow-capped mountains, rain forests to deserts, and tropical to temperate. In all these areas where soil and rainfall patterns permit, agricultural crops are grown. For the most part farming is of a subsistence nature being small single family plots. These farms make up to 90% of the farming in most of the East African nations. There are large farms in Kenya and Zimbabwe generally confined to the temperate uplands. Elsewhere there are large government …

Human Rights In Africa: Observations On The Implications Of Economic Priority, Minasse Haile Jan 1986

Human Rights In Africa: Observations On The Implications Of Economic Priority, Minasse Haile

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

Serious internal obstacles also block adequate realization of civil and political rights in Africa. The colonial legacy, rising popular expectations for a better life, subversion from abroad and the absence of strong national cohesion will engender political instability in African political systems that give free rein to the exercise of civil and political rights. Moreover, even if one assumes a democratic political system would be viable politically, that system may succumb to demands for increased consumption rather than promote adequate investment in infrastructure. In either event, democratic political systems will tend to be unstable, with the result that economic development …
