The Use Of Rainfall Patterns In Predicting Population Densities Of Multimammate Rats, Mastomys Natalensis, H. Leirs, R. Verhagen, W. Verheyen Mar 1990

The Use Of Rainfall Patterns In Predicting Population Densities Of Multimammate Rats, Mastomys Natalensis, H. Leirs, R. Verhagen, W. Verheyen

Vertebrate Pest Conference Proceedings: 14th (1990)

During 3 years we studied a population of multimammate rats, Mastomys natalensis (Smith 1834), in Morogoro, Tanzania. Data were collected in both removal and capture-recapture schemes. We present evidence that patterns of growth and reproduction were related to onset and abundance of rains. This partially explains differences in densities. Additionally, we investigated available literature data and related them with climatological data. A scenario is presented which enables us to predict how densities of multimammate rats may evolve in the following year and whether there will be a risk of outbreaks. The use and implications of this scenario in planning control …

Seaport Planning In Zaire : An Analysis Of Constraints And Potentialities, J. Kabwita Tshilomb Dec 1989

Seaport Planning In Zaire : An Analysis Of Constraints And Potentialities, J. Kabwita Tshilomb

World Maritime University Dissertations

A seaport is fundamentally a central place of economic and cultural interchange ; more specifically, it is a place where the mode of transportation changes from land to water-borne systems . As a modern node in a multimodal system , the essential function of a seaport is transport integration ; but in performing this function , and for other reasons , a seaport may also become a major urban centre , an important source of employment , and an influencial factor in regional and national development . Therefore , it is unwise to approach the problems of seaports in isolation. …

Agitation Requirements For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tanks, Joseph Philemon Mmbaga Sep 1989

Agitation Requirements For Complete Drawdown Of Floating Solids In Stirred Tanks, Joseph Philemon Mmbaga

Theses

The agitation requirements for complete drawdown of floating solids in mechanically agitated tank vessels has been studied both theoretically and experimentally.

A semi-theoretical equation has been derived on the basis of Kolmogoroff's theory of isotropic turbulence to determine the minimum impeller speed required for drawdown. The equation contains one adjustable parameter which has been found to be a function of the impeller type and position in the tank vessel.

The equation was tested using various vessels and impeller configurations. The solid phase consisted of high density polyethylene (density = 897kg/m3), low density polyethylene (density = 840kg/m3) …

Flowsheet Simulation Studies Of New Oilseed Extraction Processes, M. Khalfani Jun 1989

Flowsheet Simulation Studies Of New Oilseed Extraction Processes, M. Khalfani

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Results are reported on the flowsheet simulation studies of new oilseed processes suitable for local conditions. A process model was developed and new design simulation methods using Computer Aided Design (CAD) approach were employed for the preliminary investigation of a number of alternative scenarios.

Results have shown that new processes should give considerable investment savings if separation of the crude product is not carried out by distillation. However, the economics of processes using alternative separation technology is highly dependent on operating conditions.

The use of spreadsheet programs for flowsheet evaluation studies offers opportunities for application of CAD techniques in local …

A Reiner-Rivlin Fluid Flow Through Entrance Region Of A Circular Pipe, V. G. Masanja

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The flow of a Reiner-Rivlin fluid with two viscosity coefficients through the entrance region of a circular pipe has been studied numerically. In particular the growth of the entrance length as a function of the Reynolds number and the non-Newtonian parameters has been examined. Where comparison could be made, the results have been compared with existing experimental -and numerical data as well as the limited theoretical work available.

Conflicts And Politics In Urban Planning In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla Jan 1989

Conflicts And Politics In Urban Planning In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This paper tries to discuss two important issues. First, it examines the conflict between ideology and actual urban planning in Tanzania. It is argued that via the Arusha-Declaration,Tanzania showed the intention of building an egalitarian society based on the principles of Ujamaa (socialism), hence one expected that an attempt to transform some colonial structures in order to suit the socialist aspiring nation could be in the agenda in Tanzania. This has never been the case at the level of urban planning. The paper argues that the gap between theory and practice exists because Tanzania's socialist theory itself is weak, and …

Human Rights In Africa: A Cultural, Ideological, And Legal Examination, Ziyad Motala Jan 1989

Human Rights In Africa: A Cultural, Ideological, And Legal Examination, Ziyad Motala

UC Law SF International Law Review

This Article considers the dominant liberal interpretation of human rights and examines its relevance to African society in terms of its cultural and ideological origins. An argument is made that traditional African society had a conception of human rights which respected important human rights values. However, the rights in traditional African society were not conceptualized in individual terms. This constitutes a fundamental point of departure from the liberal interpretation. Furthermore, human rights practices should be understood, and criticisms against African societies made, in terms of traditional African conceptions. Finally, the African Charter of Human and People's Rights is evaluated in …

The State, Law And Urban Poverty In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla Jan 1989

The State, Law And Urban Poverty In Tanzania, Joe Lugalla

Institute for Educational Development, East Africa

This paper is about the state, law and urban poverty in Tanzania. The paper examines how the state in Tanzania has been trying to solve the problem of urban poverty. The main argument is that the state's conception of urban poverty is not realistic. The urban poor are seen as responsible for their poverty. This is confirmed by the kind of coercive policies, legislation and other measures which have been instituted by the state in order to solve the problem. The paper argues that due to lack of a critical analysis of the causes of poverty, the state has been …

Pathology, East Africa

The analgesic effect and the usefulness of EMLA cream 5% in connection with venous blood-sampling was investigated in 42 Tanzanian schoolchildren. Approximately 2.5 g EMLA was applied to the right cubital fossa for a minimum of 120 min. The analgesic effect was pronounced - 93% of the venepunctures were pain-free and no child experienced severe pain. No adverse reactions were observed and the children could continue normal school work during the application time.

Conscientious Objection In South Africa: Governmental Paranoia And The Law Of Conscription, Lynn Berat Jan 1989

Conscientious Objection In South Africa: Governmental Paranoia And The Law Of Conscription, Lynn Berat

Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law

By the end of 1975, Mozambique and Angola' had gained independence; in 1980, Rhodesia became black majority ruled Zimbabwe.' Although it is currently occupied illegally by South Africa in contravention of both a United Nations Security Council Resolution and an advisory opinion of the International Court of Justice,' even Namibia (also known as South West Africa) will soon become an independent state.' No longer surrounded by a buffer zone of white minority ruled states separating it from black ruled Africa, South Africa stands alone, the last outpost of white supremacy on the continent.

Amidst all of these developments, the South …

Behavior Of Ductile Materials Under Impulsive Loading, M. Y. Brunner Dec 1988

Behavior Of Ductile Materials Under Impulsive Loading, M. Y. Brunner

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

Ductile materials under dynamic loading are known to be able to absorb energy and thereby delay or even prevent structural failure. This paper is concerned with such behaviour in the case of impulsive loads of short duration. It is shown that even when the feared, unstable, labile condition is attained, failure may not necessarily occur. This behaviour is particularly impressive for structures with large mass, because it is essentially the mass which slows down the attainment of the failure strains. If the impulsive load dies away quickly enough, the constant plastic resistance will be adequate to bring the increasing deformations …

Winery Waste Utilization-A Case Study Of Dowico, J. H.Y. Katima Dec 1988

Winery Waste Utilization-A Case Study Of Dowico, J. H.Y. Katima

Tanzania Journal of Engineering and Technology (TJET)

The Dodoma Winery Company (DOWICO), is presently processing about 1000 tonnes of grapes to produce different types of wines, with left overs of about 200 as wastes. These wastes are dumped outside the factory, obviously, a poor method of waste disposition as far as the environmental significance is concerned. Since the expansion programme, to enable the plant to handle up to 30000 tonnes of grapes per year is in the pipeline the best method of disposing the huge amount of waste (about 6000 tonnes) that will result, has to be sought.

This paper highlights the financial and sanitary advantage of …
