Nineteenth-Century Literary Magazines As Short Story Anthologies, Kelsey J. Brazil

Steeplechase: An ORCA Student Journal

This project undertakes an inter-generic study of nineteenth-century literary magazines and classroom anthologies. Based on the workings of genre theory by Julia Kristeva, this inter-generic study argues that the form, ideologemic function, and intertextuality of the literary magazine and anthology are generically similar. This notion has the potential to greatly change the reading of periodical literature from a simple reflection of Victorian times or as a mere container of collected (but isolated) literary pieces into one of cohesive, multi-genre significance. If this project was fully funded and done, it would be a video game on Steam with an art exhibition, small poetry book, and novel accompanied with it. It would even have a show, a soundtrack, and merch. But at this level, it was to make an experience for my audience that they could experience whether or not they enjoyed video games as a concept. Autism In Real Life: Performance As Pedagogy And Advocacy, Paula Horton

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how autoethnographic performance can function simultaneously as public pedagogy and disability advocacy through the analysis of Autism in Real Life, a solo performance created and staged at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. Drawing from performance studies, psychology, sociology, and disability studies, the project explores how embodied storytelling communicates autistic lived experience to audiences unfamiliar with autism. The performance combines narrative, humor, direct audience address, visual media, and accessibility-centered theatrical design to move beyond clinical representations of autism and toward a relational understanding grounded in neurodiversity and the social model of disability.

The City of Dallas developed a neighborhood typology map to assess cultural resource distribution as part of its 2018 Cultural Plan, representing a relatively new approach that remains underexplored in academic literature. In the same plan, stakeholders identified equity as a central value, highlighting the need for tools that better support equitable cultural planning. This study evaluates the outcomes of two mapping techniques–cultural asset mapping and opportunity mapping – to examine how each represents cultural resource distribution across Dallas and supports equity-oriented analysis. This research examines the relationship between human creativity and generative AI, arguing that while AI art continues art's development, it also introduces a rupture that challenges core concepts such as authorship, originality, and artistic identity. Drawing on historical parallels with earlier disruptions - including the printing press and photography - the study traces recurring cultural tensions, fears of the artist's replacement, and debates around authenticity, while acknowledging the creative possibilities opened by generative systems. To modify the economy and make it less dependent on oil, several initiatives were launched by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in 2016 under the Saudi Vision 2030 umbrella. This study looked at the financial impact of Saudi Vision 2030 and assessed whether non-oil industries have responded as desired. Since the implementation of Saudi Vision 2030, several industries have demonstrated noteworthy accomplishments and contributed to the GDP of Saudi Arabia. Three such industries—tourism, small and medium-sized enterprises, and the “Saudi Made” logo campaign—were the subject of this study. The study aimed to investigate the methods used by public relations departments on social media during the coronavirus pandemic and explain the type of persuasive methods and media language used in the official account of the Sudanese Ministry of Health on Facebook and the most common public relations strategies that were used during the pandemic. The study analysed the Facebook account by preparing a content analysis form for the period from 01/02/2021 to 30/04/2021. My project analyzes the narratives constructed by Benito Mussolini about Italian colonization of Ethiopia in Fascist Italy. Mussolini's narratives regarding colonization in Ethiopia fall into narrative categories: 1. the narrative of Fascist Italy as a newly reborn Roman Empire, and 2. the narrative of Fascist Italy as racially superior to Ethiopians which made a civilizing mission necessary to Mussolini. Mussolini’s verbal narratives and their diffusion should be examined to gain a clearer understanding of what was shown to the Italian public so there is an understanding of the dissonance between official policies and proclamations and public sentiment.
