Mary O.H. Williamson Collection Of Colored Celebrities Here And There, Jaclynn Martin, Kristal Euter Jan 2024

Mary O.H. Williamson Collection Of Colored Celebrities Here And There, Jaclynn Martin, Kristal Euter

Prints and Photographs Department

Provided by Mary O.H. Williamson:

One phase of home room activity in the high school is the discussion of topics of the day. From one such discussion in the Cardozo High School, Washington D.C. this collection of material was started.

The lives and work of Frederick Douglass, Booker T. Washington, and Paul Laurence Dunbar are known to the average student, but only as vague, remote figures of the past. The though to me that in order to encourage and inspire in the students respect for their people it was necessary to guide them in the discovery of the many living …

From The Top Rope: Melodrama, Ritual, And Gender In Lucha Libre, Rebecca Wickham

Theses & ETDs

This exploration takes on Mexican professional wrestling, or lucha libre as a distinct form of wrestling expressed through its spectacle’s continuity of aesthetic, balletic maneuvers, and attached iconography. Beginning with an analysis of the melodrama and fiction on the creation of lucha libre, the study navigates through the development of lucha libre in connection to fictional expectations of melodrama, its ritual aspects both inside and outside of the ring, and its gendered components within the films created. Drawing on the works of Peter Brooks, Roland Barthes, Catherine Bell, and Heather Levi, I examine how certain aspects of the sport can …

Yuriko Doi’S Teaching And Transmission Of Noh And Kyōgen In San Francisco, Judy Halebsky Jan 2024

Yuriko Doi’S Teaching And Transmission Of Noh And Kyōgen In San Francisco, Judy Halebsky

English and Creative Writing | Faculty Scholarship

Yuriko Doi founded the Theatre of Yugen in San Francisco and taught American students noh and kyōgen for more than thirty years. Noh theatre, in living practice in Japan for more than six hundred years, incorporates music, dance, acting, and singing. While noh is serious and sombre, kyōgen is a comedic form traditionally performed within or between noh plays. Starting in the late 1970s, Doi’s Theatre of Yugen performed new works inspired and informed by noh as well as kyōgen in English around the US and also in Japan. Noh training ideally begins in childhood as one-on-one study with a …

Integrative Arts: They’Re Everywhere, Phynyx Soltis-Tatro Jan 2024

Integrative Arts: They’Re Everywhere, Phynyx Soltis-Tatro

Theses & ETDs

Frequently throughout human history, we question the nature of prominent concepts and ideas present in our lives. One such concept is that of the nature of art. Throughout my education, starting in high school and continuing at New College, I have been pursuing the notion of integrative and interconnected artistic ideals. While this has been a growing and ongoing study, the process came into focus last year during the conception of my fully original stage musical. This musical is called Symphony of A Survivor, and creating it provided me with an opportunity to experience the complexity of art firsthand. During …

The Importance Of Lived Experiences: My Journey In Dance, Statistics, And Pedagogy, Olivia Nelson

Theses & ETDs

This thesis aims to study my training in dance, theatre, and statistics as performance. The goal is to cover aspects of my life that led me to where I am today. From dancing at a small studio in a town no one has heard of, to performing a dance routine in a community theatre performance, as well as other performance training and experiences. I have gained a lot of valuable knowledge and techniques. In theatre, I immersed myself in a play as an ensemble member and took hands-on classes in college to gain theatrical experience as well. Additionally, I was …

Prima Donna: Understanding Women In Opera And The Issues Of Representation And Power, Mia Ludden Jan 2024

Prima Donna: Understanding Women In Opera And The Issues Of Representation And Power, Mia Ludden

Theses & ETDs

Often characterized by dramatic singing and intense costumes, opera expands beyond popular culture's misrepresentation. With its history tracing back to early theater and developing as time progressed, opera has a complicated past with women. This thesis attempts to explore women’s roles in opera and issues of representation and power. This research is accompanied by my ethnographic research at the Sarasota Opera. I have spent considerable time observing and interviewing people at the opera in the context of this thesis. The ethnography also fills the gaps where academic research is limited. I examine history’s commentary on women through opera, the representation …

Network Effects And Economic Growth The Role Of Arts Clustering In Sarasota, Darwin Tepe

Theses & ETDs

An analysis of Sarasota's arts organizations reveals that Arts clustering is a critical factor in its urban economic and social advancement, offering a blueprint for economic development in similarly specialized regions. Sarasota is identified as demonstrating the specialist view of urban development, where its clustered arts organizations reap and produce network effects, enhancing both the city's cultural draw on tourists and its economic welfare. Additionally, previously published literature which aims to quantify Sarasota's arts exports is expanded upon. Sarasota's Arts cluster generates additional economic activity beyond what has been previously quantified, indicating the arts as a higher yielding asset than …

Making Sense Of The Thrill Of Theme Parks: Immersion, Simulation, And Sensory Stimulation, Audrey Dixon Jan 2024

Making Sense Of The Thrill Of Theme Parks: Immersion, Simulation, And Sensory Stimulation, Audrey Dixon

Theses & ETDs

While immersive experiences are not new, they have been rapidly gaining popularity in entertainment as of recent; it seems that more and more venues are turning their attention to this form of entertainment. The rise of escape rooms and even 3D movies are evidence of this desire to be immersed in the story, as opposed to just viewing it. From my research, I have noticed that theme parks such as Disney World and Universal Studios have also been intensifying the immersion of their parks. In my research, I relied heavily on the work of Josephine Machon, a leading scholar in …
