The Effects Of Covid-19 On Substance Use Among College Students, Madison M. Wakely, Halle Trahey, Nicholas Bolognini, Jennifer C. Elliott Phd

Molloy Multidisciplinary Undergraduate Research Conference

Recent studies have shown mixed results on whether substance use has increased in college students over the course of the Coronavirus pandemic. This study surveyed 115 undergraduate students at a largely commuter college in the suburban northeast. The data suggested that mental health issues increased since before the pandemic, while alcohol use has largely stayed the same over the course of the pandemic. Continued research in diverse college settings is needed on this important topic.

The media typically refers to various means of communication that reach or influence people widely. This includes television, radio, newspapers, magazines, social media platforms, websites, podcasts, and more. Essentially, it has many ways through which information is transmitted to a large audience. The media plays a significant role in shaping public opinion, especially with regard to disordered eating and body dysmorphia in both men and women. Disordered eating refers to a wide range of irregular eating behaviors that may or may not meet the criteria for a specific eating disorder diagnosis such as anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, or binge-eating disorder. …

Background and Purpose: Mitochondrial health plays a vital role in the development of chronic health conditions, including neurodegenerative and cardiovascular diseases. Mitochondria have the unique ability to independently control replication of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) depending on conditions of cellular stress, including oxidative stress. Exposure to environmental metals affects a variety of health outcomes via oxidative stress pathways. For the MFA's Historic Preservation course titled 'Building Materials Conservation', this is a case study of a historic building. Built in 1842, St. Mary Basilica is a landmark building for the small town of Natchez, the oldest city in the state of Mississippi. It’s one of the oldest religious buildings in the south, the first cathedral in the state, consecrated by the Roman Catholic church, and remains the state’s only Basilica, of which there are less than one hundred in the country. Anne Rice’s gothic novel “Interview with the Vampire” (1976) has not only stood the test of time as a cult classic, but has continued to be told and retold through a film adaptation (1994) and recent AMC television production (2022). Looking through the lens of adaptation theory and the ideas of Nina Auerbach in Our Vampires, Ourselves, this presentation highlights how both the original novel and subsequent adaptations use the figure of the vampire to represent the social changes of the era of its creation, particularly in regards to queerness and sexuality.

This work uses Western genre cinema as a springboard for evaluating how alt-right political ideologies are absorbed by common, everyday people. Using the exploratory work of political journalist Andrew Marantz and employing his research of the alt-right movement as supporting material, it explores the dissemination of alt-right rhetoric in contemporary settings. Evaluating instances of hegemonic masculinity in John Farrow’s 1953 film Hondo and John Huston’s 1960 film The Unforgiven, alongside John Ford’s The Searchers, this work explores how filmic versions of masculinity have shaped characters to mimic and enforce social and societal systems that coincidentally adhere to alt-right ideologies. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act (“CARES Act”) made it possible for independent contractors to access unemployment benefits, or “Pandemic Unemployment Assistance” (“PUA”), for the first time. This created a new awareness for how many gig-based performing artists were considered independent contractors. In the wake of the PUA program expiration in 2021, the DOL identified 425,000 fraudulent unemployment benefit claims filed, totaling $5.5 billion, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The fraudulent claims were filed using the real identities of individuals who were not employed, which were likely stolen during previous data breaches …

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to understand the lived experiences of second-choice homeschoolers in West Virginia with forced remote learning and homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic. The label second-choice homeschoolers in this research refers to homeschooling families in West Virginia who have first-hand experience with remote learning during the COVID-19 pandemic. The theory guiding this study was Bandura’s social cognitive theory, as it aligned with understanding parental homeschooling experiences by focusing on the impact of environmental events on human behavioral patterns. This article provides an overview of one Canadian Civil Affairs Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Homer Smiley Robinson, and his contribution to the rebuilding of the province of Brescia in north Italy and its eponymous capital after liberation from Nazi occupation. Robinson, as Provincial Commissioner, led the Civil Affairs team from April to October 1945 as the first Canadian to be appointed to the position. Traditionally, Civil Affairs has been studied predominantly as a bureaucratic structure. The human element in terms of staff and stakeholders has been almost entirely neglected. The Vernon Military Camp was one of the many interwoven institutions that fed trained soldiers into the vast armies of the British Empire in the Second World War. Beginning the war as a barren hill that lacked modern equipment, it was eventually developed into a professional training centre that both served and benefitted from national, Imperial and Allied war efforts. Taking a ground-level view of Canadian Army training and inter-theatre learning, this article argues that army training camps, even those in the periphery, played a vital role in strengthening Imperial and Allied interoperability by facilitating knowledge transfer away from active …
