Make It Funky For Me: Black British Women’S Explorations Of Britishness, Womanhood, And Artistry Through 2000s Music, Monique Charles

Sociology Faculty Articles and Research

2000s Britain was an interesting and expansive time musically for Black Britain (Bradley 2013), as underground music gained traction in mainstream spaces. This article examines the context in which Black British women were able to cross over into the British mainstream and explores how U.K. garage and U.K. funky artists expressed their creativity, autonomy, womanhood, Blackness, and Britishness. Female U.K. garage artists set a precedent in the creation of “new” diverse identities for Black British women artists, but artists in both underground and mainstream music scenes were also forced to contend with restrictive and harmful misogynoir.

This paper examines the treatment of boy actors in the Renaissance between the years 1300-1600. With very little primary source material due to the low literacy rate in the Renaissance era, analyzing court records is the primary way of understanding how theatre companies and society harmfully treated the boy actors. One of the many issues the boy actors faced, was their perception from the audience. This study analyzes through a materialistic lens, how the audience treated the boy actors. Mental disabilities create internal obstacles for the affected individual that can be prevent them from functioning properly in a given setting. The architectural design solution to presented will allow them to not only address, but overcome, these obstacles. This solution will serve to remediate sensory overload and similar symptoms, while simultaneously providing their incremental exposure so that they can better handle their presence in everyday life. This creates a functional paradox, requiring careful compositional considerations in order to create a controlled, but flexible, environmental setting.

For more than six decades, creativity has been the cornerstone of diverse scientific disciplines, including psychology, sociology, and organizational behavior (OB) studies. Its fundamental role in guiding business prospects, driving development, and fueling economic growth has made it an essential research theme in many fields. Yet, despite its importance, scholars within the information systems (IS) discipline have highlighted the significant lack of attention paid to this concept in their research. A Menu And Its Implications On Filipino And American Culture, Caitlyn Begosa

I analyzed a collection of menus collected from around 1950s to 1960s from the Kay Shaw Nelson Papers. I decided to focus my research around a menu from the Philippines. From here, I analyzed the graphic design and word choice of the menu to come to the conclusion that it was targeted towards an American or English-speaking tourist audience. Then, I researched the history of food tourism in the Philippines and how it helped flourish the country’s economy. Although the Filipino menu from Nelson’s collection inspired the brunt of my studies, I also noticed the small amount of Asian menus …

Humans have observed stars since prehistory. Although Earth's rotation and orbit adjust where they are in the sky each night, they appear to be fixed in place relative to each other. This allowed people to recognize consistent patterns over time which we now identify as constellations.

Background. Meningioma clinical trials have assessed interventions including surgery, radiotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. However, agreement does not exist on what, how, and when outcomes of interest should be measured. To do so would allow comparative analysis of similar trials. This systematic review aimed to summarize the outcomes measured and reported in meningioma clinical trials. Methods. A hundred yards down a sandy road, erected before a Spanish moss covered live oak tree, is a bronze plaque that recounts a brief story ofJoseph M. White and his political career, and emphasizes his importance in the early history of the Florida Territory as a delegate to Congress. Briefly mentioned is the reason the plaque appears at this location-"[White] became the owner of this site as part of a 3,000 acre plantation," naming his cotton and sugar cane producing estate Casa Bianca. On the eve of the First World War, the United States viewed events in Europe through a filter of isolationism and neutrality. Two vast oceans had reinforced an inclination toward internal affairs and paranoia, while engendering suspicion of diplomatic alliances and foreign revolutions. But events in faraway places-Sarajevo, St. Petersburg, and the Somme-made isolation impossible and neutrality improbable.

Virginia English Journal

The shift in political landscape in Virginia from former Democratic Governor Ralph Northam to current Republican Governor Glen Youngkin influenced educational policies in the commonwealth. Waving the banner of parental rights, the Youngkin administration began targeting LGBTQIA2S+ students and educators through legislation and policies such as SB 656 and Model Policies on Ensuring Privacy, Dignity, and Respect for All Students and Parents in Virginia’s Public Schools. To understand the influence on rural school districts, this study asked how rural secondary English Language Arts educators understand and respond to these anti-LGBTQIA2S+ policies as well as the ways in which those educators …
