Bangladesh got independence through a bloody war in 1971. One of the commitments of the founding fathers of Bangladesh was to ensure fundamental rights for the people of East Pakistan. However, when the framers of the Constitution started drafting, they tried to put some limitations and restrictions upon fundamental rights. The Constitution of Bangladesh guaranteed fundamental rights, but it also put reasonable restrictions on freedom of assembly, freedom of association, and freedom of speech.[1] This paper is going to focus on freedom of speech. …

On Sunday, November 12, 2023, Kalamazoo’s pioneer American Sign Language-interpreted shadow cast performance took place in Shaw Theatre at Western Michigan University. Clue is a mystery-comedy based on the beloved board game, loaded with witty dialogue and physical comedy. It was the perfect vehicle for the Kalamazoo county’s premiere American Sign Language (ASL) shadow cast—a special performance where the interpreters are directly onstage following the movements, dialogue, and intonation of the actors. Story network theory (SNT) is an analytical approach designed to form connections between chosen topics as well as to study those connections in their relations to stories, distinct story elements, and one another. This will provide a unifying process through which otherwise niche projects, information, or academic disciplines can be more effectively shared and accurately represented. Dramaturgy and fairy tale studies are utilized as an example application for SNT. Historian Albrecht Classen’s contention that “the culture of death . provides us with a measuring stick for human society at large” is particularly illuminating when analyzing death and Christian salvation near the religious chasm of the Reformation divide. My study focuses on reckoning as it is illustrated in late medieval and early modern allegorical English drama. The Christian belief in a soul’s redemption or damnation after death was preceded by a crucial supernatural happening, a reckoning. Informed by God’s judgment, this event became the crux of the ars moriendi (the art of dying) tradition that permeated medieval and early modern …

Criterion: A Journal of Literary Criticism

Black Aesthetics is the philosophical inquiry into the objects and practices of expressions coming from people who have been racialized as black. These expressive practices then lend to the creation of the life-worlds of people subjected to racist discourses. One such author in the contemporary English society, Bernadine Evaristo, responds to anti-black racist discourses by exploring the cultural plurality of British black life-worlds.
