Egypt’S Legal Modernism: Challenging The National Discourse, Mohamed A. El-Deeb
Egypt’S Legal Modernism: Challenging The National Discourse, Mohamed A. El-Deeb
Theses and Dissertations
Egypt’s legal modernity is the story of the modern Egyptian state itself. Reforming the country’s judiciary in the late nineteenth century was meant to achieve ambitious aims beyond the functionality of a justice system. The utmost goal was the country’s independence from the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire. The judicial reforms modernized the Egyptian state and built a judiciary and legal community like no other place. Egypt achieved its independent judiciary before gaining its political independence. That was a remarkable achievement of the judicial reform. That rich part of Egypt’s modern history is negated and disregarded from public awareness. Not …
Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone
Food And Memory In Literature: A Folkloric Approach, Pola Schiavone
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper analyzes food as a memory device in the novel Doña Flor y sus dos maridos by the Brazilian author Jorge Amado. Set in San Salvador du Bahía in northern Brazil, the novel follows Doña Flor after her husband Vadinho dies. Food and drink – considered here as folkloric forms – play a central role not only in her exploration of memories of her husband but also in the broader bahiana society with its mix of different ethnicities (African, indigenous, European). Drawing on Felix Coluccio’s and Dan Ben-Amos notions of folklore and literature and Arjun Appadurai’s exploration of the …

Towards Elucidating Psychological Arousal In Response To Music Theatre, Ryan Thomas Green
School of Art, Design and Architecture Theses
This thesis explores the psychological effects of observing experimental music theatre performance video recording. Experiencing music theatre can evoke a range of aesthetic and psychological emotions in audiences. These include joy, sadness, fear, unease, excitement, and empathy. Immersion in stories and characters can lead to temporary shifts in mood, perception, and relationships with the artwork. Watching experimental performance can activate areas of the brain associated with reward and emotion and in some cases, memory formation. These neural responses contribute to a sense of enjoyment, distress, and personal growth. The psychological impact of music theatre can be argued to extend beyond …

Between Memory And History: Irish Pubs As Sites Of Memory And Invention, Perry Share, Moonyoung Hong
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The pub has been at the centre of Irish culture and identity for at least two centuries, has become a pillar of the Irish tourism “product,” and an export commodity as thousands of themed “Irish pubs” have been established across the world in the last number of decades, supplementing existing establishments that have served the global Irish community. This paper draws on key themes from the diverse material in our upcoming academic volume on the Irish pub, to be published by Cork University Press, later in 2024. The book brings together contributions from scholars of history, sociology, design, literature, culinary …

Cooking In Times Of Oppression, Dorota Koczanowicz
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
In 2017, Marije Vogelzang's interactive performance at the Museum of Rotterdam, 'Black Confectti', was designed to enable the experience of a difficult wartime past. Using authentic recipes from the war press, she prepared dishes based on the creativity of the crisis. In the face of starvation and the struggle for life, the selflessness of creative action in the kitchen and the effort of documentation in the form of recipes from the past and culinary fantasies from the past proved to be a helpful tool for surviving the most oppressive situation. The effectiveness of this strategy is clearly demonstrated not only …
The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer
The Influence Of Western Music And The Wind Band In The Republic Of Korea, Mark Reimer
Journal of Global Awareness
Beginning with the arrival of American missionaries in 1885, the music of South Korea continues to reflect Western tonality, aesthetics, education, and popular taste. Through this musical and historical evolution, however, the country has not forsaken its traditions, musical imprint, and cultural identity, as will be discussed in the examination of select composers and music compositions.

Reclaiming Lost And Disregarded Voices: In The Vine Country, Memory, Female Independence And Wine Writing In The Victorian Age, Jane Sevastopulo
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
The historical role of Bordeaux and the consumption of claret throughout Georgian and Victorian Ireland has been explored. That fine red wines were drunk and enjoyed by the ascendancy in Ireland is not unusual. What is unusual, however, is the place of In the Vine Country,a Somerville-and-Ross travelogue commissioned and written for the Lady’s Pictorial: A Newspaper for the Home, an illustrated weekly paper founded in 1880, aimed at middle-class women in Victorian era Great Britain and Ireland. From Castletownshend, Co. Cork and Oughterard, Co. Galway, cousins Edith Œ. Somerville (1858-1949), and Violet Martin (1862-1915) were writing partners. …

Entertainment-Education And Climate Change: Program Examples, Evidence, And Best Practices From Around The World, Suruchi Sood, Amy Henderson Riley, Lyena Birkenstock
College of Population Health Faculty Papers
Entertainment-education is a global theory-driven and evidence-based storytelling strategy that promotes social and behavioral change. A formal review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature, alongside consultations with program and industry experts, revealed several contemporary examples of entertainment-education and climate change. Late-night comedy, with the inclusion of climate change storylines within popular entertainment, is common in the Global North. In the Global South, climate adaptation and mitigation narratives are situated in formats portraying audiences’ lived experiences. Crosscutting trends relate to documentary storytelling, children’s programming, and future efforts. Recommendations include re-examining theories across the social-ecological model; placing entertainment front and center; including …

Communicating Politics Without Talking Politics: The Role Of The European Union In The Game Of Egyptian Culture., Mona Massoud
Communicating Politics Without Talking Politics: The Role Of The European Union In The Game Of Egyptian Culture., Mona Massoud
Theses and Dissertations
The European Union has provided various democracy aid programs to Egypt since 2013, yet the country’s democracy index has gone down since then[1]. Despite the stagnation in the trajectory of democratization, the EU expanded its democracy promotion aid programs in 2016 to encompass the independent cultural scene in Egypt. This thesis critically examines the reasons for the stagnation of democratization processes in Egypt, a MENA country that continues to be a recipient of the EU’s democracy promotion programs. It argues that there is a discrepancy between the EU’s stated democracy promotion rhetoric and its actions, a factor that …

Jurnal Wacana Politik
“DPR - Musikal” is a highly acclaimed and ambitious musical theater video created by SkinnyIndonesian24 (Jovial da Lopez & Andovi da Lopez) that features a compelling environmental message. This piece depicts the contested meaning of nature and how it is influenced by different interests in the DPR. This research will examine the environmental politics discourses present in “DPR - Musikal” as an artistic creation that establishes a connection between environmental concerns and the notion of power. The research employed a qualitative approach and utilized Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) by Norman Fairclough. Data was gathered through video transcripts, direct interviews with …

Efficacy Of Ropivacaine For Sub-Arachnoid Block In Patients With Recent History Of Scorpion Sting, Saurabh Trivedi, Hemendra Bhardwaj, Tapan K. Gupta, Seema
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Failure of sub-arachnoid block (SAB), due to resistance to bupivacaine after a recent scorpion sting can lead to multiple block attempts and subsequent conversion to general anaesthesia. We report this case series of 10 patients with successful SAB with newly launched 0.75% hyperbaric ropivacaine, in patients with recent scorpion sting. Thus, intrathecal hyperbaric ropivacaine may be considered as the local anaesthetic agent of choice in patients with scorpion sting to prevent failure of SAB.
Keywords: Bupivacaine; Ropivacaine; Scorpion Stings; Spinal Anaesthesia.

Many coastal and rural areas in Britain are deprived. This regional aspect multiplies the effect of digital exclusion for older people. Younger people in these regions can also be digitally excluded. Codesigning digital technologies, using the natural and heritage resources of such regions would address this, but is rarely done. We present our methods and preliminary results, half-way through a 30-month project to develop novel technologies in extended reality, underwater telepresence, digital social games, and artificial intelligence voice interfaces and to use these assets to tackle digital exclusion. We are taking an intergenerational approach, working with 35 partner organizations, some …

A Glimpse Into The Constructed Wilderness: The Evolving Stories From Bryson, Strayed, And Krakauer, Halston Leigh Belcastro
English Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity
This thesis examines how humans have constructed the idea of wilderness through literature in the United States. I argue that the concept of wilderness evolves over time and continues changing due to technological advances, climate change, reflections of the past, and the romanticization of ordinary people who venture out into the wilderness for an extended period. The definitions of the wilderness are elusive and individual. The wilderness can be viewed as a place for solitude, or as a space to reflect on the past and reconcile with the present. However, there is a collective view of wilderness that emerges from …
