The Paradoxical Policies, Politics Of Tastes, And Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Of The New Order Regime, Ekky Imanjaya Sep 2024

The Paradoxical Policies, Politics Of Tastes, And Classic Indonesian Exploitation Cinema Of The New Order Regime, Ekky Imanjaya

Jurnal Wacana Politik

Although the New Order Regime (1966-1998) was widely known for its strict censorship and government control, there was a simultaneous rise in producing exploitation films with graphic and provocative images. This kind of cinema was exported internationally in the 1980s and re-released in the 2000s by transnational DVD distributors. This article analyzed the transformation of exploitation films, which were disregarded and undervalued by the Government, cultural elites, and cinema critics. It explored how these films became a battleground for the politics of taste and resulted in a series of contradictions within the political policies of the New Order. The study …

Merchants In Shakespeare’S The Merchant Of Venice: A Transactional Analysis, Raj Bhala Sep 2024

Merchants In Shakespeare’S The Merchant Of Venice: A Transactional Analysis, Raj Bhala

The Business, Entrepreneurship & Tax Law Review

Shakespeare’s The Merchant of Venice is a play with multiple merchants engaged in multiple transactions with multiple motives. The key characters – Shylock, Antonio, Bassanio, Portia, Jessica, Lorenzo, Nerissa, Graziano, and the Duke – are involved in one sort of business dealing or another. Indeed, there are 10 specific transactions: one finance transaction; one international trade transaction; one gastronomic transaction; two inheritance transactions; three marriage transactions; and two legal entrepreneurship transactions. In these deals, commerce and love are almost indistinguishable, and justice and mercy clash. Thus, lawyers can analyze the drama from a transactional perspective, and spot issues they encounter, …

The Role Of Kenneth Kaunda’S Humanism In Fostering Higher Education For Social Responsibility In Post-Colonial Zambia (1964-1991), Edward Mboyonga Sep 2024

The Role Of Kenneth Kaunda’S Humanism In Fostering Higher Education For Social Responsibility In Post-Colonial Zambia (1964-1991), Edward Mboyonga

Zambia Social Science Journal

Kenneth Kaunda, Zambia’s first president from 1964 to 1991, advanced a Pan-African social-political ideology of humanism as a moral code to guide all human activities in the nation’s political, economic, and social spheres. Within education, humanism envisaged producing socially responsible and public good-oriented graduates equipped with humane values and capable of driving the national development agenda. This paper critically examines the nexus between Kaunda’s humanism and education by focussing on its role in fostering higher education for social responsibility in post-colonial Zambia. In addressing this, it focusses on the University of Zambia as a case study by drawing on secondary …

The Late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda’S Influence On Wildlife Conservation And Tourism In South Luangwa National Park Of Zambia, Chikondi Banda-Thole, Thomas Kweku Taylor, Thor Larsen

Zambia Social Science Journal

Wildlife in Zambia’s Luangwa Valley has fascinated tourists from the pre-colonial era to date. Writings on the prolific beauty of the region describe the abundance of species and beautiful scenery of the valley. The late President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda declared South Luangwa a National Park in 1971. He further facilitated the Luangwa Integrated Rural Development Project (LIRDP) funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD) to support the management of the Park and engage local communities in conservation efforts and livelihood development. The South Luangwa National Park and adjacent Game Management Areas were Dr. Kaunda’s preferred destination for work …

Seventeen Crises In Western Civilization That Have Arisen Since The Dark Ages: A Cognition Science-Oriented Approach, Andrew Targowski Sep 2024

Seventeen Crises In Western Civilization That Have Arisen Since The Dark Ages: A Cognition Science-Oriented Approach, Andrew Targowski

Comparative Civilizations Review

The purpose of this article is to synthesize those crises in the unfolding of Western civilization that are controlled by human knowledge and wisdom. The methodology is transdisciplinary, utilizing a cognitive science-oriented, big-picture view of civilization and main conflicts. The crises are investigated across three time periods; the Dark Ages (from the fifth to the fourteenth century), Modern Times (from the fifteenth to the twentieth century), and the present century. The findings reveal that today Western civilization faces seventeen significant crises. Knowledge is not sufficient to solve these crises; we need to employ knowledge-based wisdom. This approach presents a new …

The Takings Blunderbuss: From Pennsylvania Coal To Dobbs, Michael Allan Wolf Sep 2024

The Takings Blunderbuss: From Pennsylvania Coal To Dobbs, Michael Allan Wolf

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article explores three problems with the excess use of the Takings Clause (the "takings blunderbuss") that should cause concern not to left-wing judges and scholars who endorse seemingly unfettered activism from the bench and champion an organic view of the Constitution, but instead, and somewhat surprisingly, to conservatives who claim to eschew those practices. The first problem is that the text and original understanding, as far as we can discern, indicate that the Takings Clause was designed to ensure that owners receive payment when they are forced to sacrifice ownership of their tangible property for public use, most commonly …

The Role Of Pornography In The "Rough Sex" Defence In Canada, Lise Gotell, Isabel Grant, Elizabeth Sheehy Sep 2024

The Role Of Pornography In The "Rough Sex" Defence In Canada, Lise Gotell, Isabel Grant, Elizabeth Sheehy

Dalhousie Law Journal

Drawing upon the authors’ earlier research studying the consent defence when it is used to suggest that the complainant agreed to “rough sex” involving violence, this paper develops an extended analysis of the complex role of pornography in these decisions. This paper focuses on a subset of “rough sex” cases, where pornography played a role in “scripting” the accused’s behaviour. Thematically, these cases included: those where the accused had a substantial history of consumption of violent pornography; cases in which the accused forced the complainant to view pornography as part of the assault; cases where the accused recorded the attack, …
