This is the fifth volume of publications of the Bet She’an Archaeological Project, describing the large-scale IAA excavations at the site of Bet She’an–ancient Nysa-Scythopolis, during 1986–2002. Bet She’an V: Hellenistic Nysa-Scythopolis is the second volume presenting the full excavation report of the IAA excavations at Tel Iẓṭabba, conducted between 1991 and 1994. The first volume in this series, Bet She’an IV (IAA Reports 62), focused on two corpora of finds: stamped amphora handles and sealings. Open Access (OA) is not a monolith. A variety of licenses, format considerations, publishing platforms, and business models make the OA landscape particularly complex. Nonetheless, because of the immense benefits public access to research and creative works provides, we think OA is a challenge worth pursuing. This presentation offers an overview of OA publishing landscapes and provides case studies of flipping a subscription journal to OA, supporting institutional authors in publishing monographs OA, working with faculty to adopt Open Educational Resources (OER) as course materials, and leveraging an institutional repository to support green OA. The theory of cultural pragmatics describes the process through which social actors guide their symbolic performances. However, this theory has not paid sufficient attention to the audience’s role in constructing the meaning of these performances. Instead of positing that the intended meanings performed by actors are internal states to be either correctly or incorrectly perceived by an audience, my contention is that the purported intentions of actors are in fact audience constructions that are ascribed to actors. I support this claim through the development of what I call ambiguous performances. These are performances that combine elements of incompatible social roles. …

Objectives: To evaluatethe effectiveness of social skills training (SST) interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis were carried out to identify relevant studies published between 2000-2023. The study was conductedin accordance with the PRISMA guidelines. Studies were included if they met the following criteria: randomized controlled trials (RCTs) or quasi-RCTs, participants were children with ASD aged 3-18 years, SST interventions were delivered individually or in groups, and social skills were assessed using standardized measures. Effect sizes were calculated using Cohen’s d, and meta-analyses were carried out using a random-effects model. Results: A total …

Negotiating Theological Meaning In Contemporary Film, Shimbo Pastory William

This paper examines how contemporary films function as social constructs that shape identity and influence the negotiation of theological meaning among young viewers. Drawing on insights from John Pungente and Monty Williams, it explores how Ignatian spirituality and the Spiritual Exercises can guide theological engagement with film. Using theological hermeneutics and qualitative film analysis, the study investigates how young Christians, particularly Gen Z viewers, interpret cinematic narratives through a Christian lens. It argues that even non-religious films can mediate theological insights and become meaningful spaces for discovering God’s saving presence in contemporary culture.

Atmospheric Characterization For Optical Paths In Lunar Proximity, Patrick D. Carattini

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents a novel technique for estimating the Fried seeing parameter (r0) for optical paths around the Moon, where traditional methods fail due to the Moon's intensity. Using image processing, it derives the atmospheric optical transfer function (OTF) by using the Moon's edge as a step-input. A simulation chain validates the approach, achieving r0 estimation within 0.0012 m. Real-world tests confirm accuracy through visual and statistical analysis, offering an effective alternative for atmospheric characterization of optical paths close to the moon.

With the rapid emergence of high-quality generative artificial intelligence (“AI”), some have advocated for mandatory disclosure when the technology is used to generate new text, images, or video. But the precise harms posed by nontransparent uses of generative AI have not been fully explored. While the use of the technology to produce material that masquerades as factual (“deepfakes”) is clearly deceptive, this Article focuses on a more ambiguous area: the consumer’s interest in knowing whether works of art or entertainment were created using generative AI. Literary agents are an under researched and comparatively recent feature of international book publishing. This chapter defines literary agents in comparison to other international book publishing intermediaries (like foreign rights agents and literary scouts) and maps the history and roles of the literary agent in Europe and Anglo-America from the nineteenth century to the present. Agents are pushed and pulled by various dichotomies in the industry: center vs periphery, culture vs commerce, local vs global. The integration of robotic technology into spinal surgery has led to a remarkable transformation, offering improved precision and safety. The “CT-Fluoro merge” and “Scan-and-Plan” methods for pedicle screw application promise numerous advantages, minimizing risks associated with traditional approaches. Our early series of patients who underwent robot-assisted pedicle screw placements for various indications, predominantly lumbar spondylosis, revealed no complications related to screws, neurological deficits, or unplanned returns to the operating theatre, thus emphasizing the safety and effectiveness of the robot. Studies have consistently demonstrated the superiority of robot-assisted pedicle screw placement in terms of accuracy, with decreasing rates of technical issues …

Carnival, Ritual, And Race-Thinking In The Bolivian Andes, Ximena Cordova, Adhemar Mercado

This paper explores the intersection of race, religion, and colonial legacies through the lens of the Oruro Carnival, examining its role in shaping Bolivian identity. Critical religion scholars argue that the entanglement of race and religion is a product of Western modernity and colonialism, which has influenced both historical and contemporary power relations. This framework is applied to analyse the Carnival, where religious practices and festive performances intersect, reflecting colonial efforts at religious conversion and racial categorisation. By focusing on the ethnography of Oruro’s embodied festive practices, this study investigates how the Carnival contributes to the construction of difference amid …
