“Gotcha!” How The British Government Re-Invented Propaganda In 1982, Wesley Stephens

By what means were the British public motivated to fight the Falklands War in 1982, and how did those means work? Using methods of neo-Gramscian analysis to build on contemporary theories of virtual war, this paper illuminates the means by which popular culture can be manipulated to support the goals of the ruling class, in this case the war against the Argentinian junta. The media’s role in the conflict, particularly that of the Sun tabloid, was able to shape a hegemonic popular culture to be more accepting of military action and eventually led to combat being viewed as entertainment. From its humble beginnings as wholly utilitarian workwear in the 19th century, to its modern rise to high-fashion, the ubiquity of denim, particularly in the form of jeans, has had a fascinating journey in its little-over-150-year history (Beazley, 2015). Of note has been the recent rise in popularity of Japanese denim. Since the end of the Second World War, Japan seems to have had an insatiable demand for Americana (Marx, 2023). Yet, if considered in the sociohistorical context of Japanese-American relations, this ought to be highly improbable. This course is designed to explore various musical culture in the world. I will introduce ethnic instruments and the distinguishing features, as well as the history and development. This course will cover traditional music and popular music of each region. It offers a general knowledge of non-western music, people and their unique culture. Students will gain a better understanding and appreciation of world music.
