A Virtual Art Festival In West Java; Participatory Culture During The Pandemic, Neneng Yanti Khozanatu Lahpan Apr 2025

A Virtual Art Festival In West Java; Participatory Culture During The Pandemic, Neneng Yanti Khozanatu Lahpan

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

YouTube was used as a significant platform for public performances around the globe during the COVID-19 pandemic, including those given by contemporary and traditional artists and communities. Although this transference of public performance to virtual performance has meant challenges for traditional artists, it has also encouraged them to create new creative media spaces. Instead of confronting digital technology, some traditional artists compromise and negotiate with it. Through an ethnographic account of a performance in Tasikmalaya, West Java, this article describes how traditional artistic forms were preserved through a virtual-based art festival performed by the art community, Komunitas Cermin Tasikmalaya. Solidarity, …

Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Creation, And The Future Path Of Copyright Law, Peter K. Yu Apr 2025

Artificial Intelligence, Autonomous Creation, And The Future Path Of Copyright Law, Peter K. Yu

BYU Law Review

Most literature at the intersection of copyright and artificial intelligence (AI) has focused primarily on what copyright law is or ought to be. Frequently overlooked is the question of what copyright law will be in the AI space. Understanding this question is crucial because the path of copyright law chosen by the United States will have a major impact on the country’s economic and technological future. This Article begins by scrutinizing two lines of arguments that have been advanced to deny copyright protection to AI-generated works: constitutional and incentivebased. The Article then discusses a third line of arguments— harmonization-based arguments—and …

"Sunda Modern"; Gendered Modernity In Sundanese Performing Arts, Andrew N. Weintraub Apr 2025

"Sunda Modern"; Gendered Modernity In Sundanese Performing Arts, Andrew N. Weintraub

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

In this article, I offer new ways of seeing and hearing Sundanese women singers in modern post-independence Indonesia. I propose a dynamic and historical approach to show how individual female singers shaped new material realities and symbolic meanings of modern Sundanese identity (Sunda modern) from the early 1950s through the mid-1970s. My approach emphasizes difference, uniqueness, and novelty in singers’ public image, on-stage presentation, vocal style, and musical repertoire. I contend that singers’ ability to branch out and cross over – by engaging the national (for example, singing in the national language) and the global (for example, Western-inflected …

Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley Apr 2025

Sundanese Performing Arts In The Us As Legacy Of The Center For World Music, Kathy Foley

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Presentation of Sundanese arts in the US by non-Sundanese grew from a program of the Center for World Music (CWM), an incubator for Sundanese performing arts practice in the San Francisco Bay area in the 1970s. Those (both Sundanese and American) coming out of that encounter engaged in intercultural teaching and performance of music, dance, and wayang (puppet/human dance theatre) in the US in the then developing programs leading to a BA or graduate degree in ethnomusicology, dance, or theatre arts. Performances by Sundanese gamelan groups with American artists in and beyond the university also developed. While such groups persist, …

Beyond The "Zaman Kaset" (Era Of The Cassette); Interview With Euis Komariah, Henry Spiller

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

Indonesian music fans all over the world were saddened to learn of the untimely death of Euis Komariah on 11 August 2011, in Bandung, West Java. Ibu Euis earned international fame as an award-winning singer, a teacher, and a businesswoman. I had the opportunity to interview her about her illustrious career on 19 April 2007, during her residency at the University of California, Davis. This essay provides an annotated translation of that interview, in which we addressed topics including media (radio broadcasting and the cassette industry), recording technologies, the development of new tunings and modes, and the development of jaipongan …

Ajip Rosidi’S "Kegelisahan" (Restlessness) In Between Sundanese And Indonesian Literature, Teddi Muhtadin, Mikihiro Moriyama Apr 2025

Ajip Rosidi’S "Kegelisahan" (Restlessness) In Between Sundanese And Indonesian Literature, Teddi Muhtadin, Mikihiro Moriyama

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This article explores the literary journey of Ajip Rosidi, one of Indonesia’s most prolific writers, highlighting his unique position between Sundanese and Indonesian literature. Ajip authored over 300 works spanning diverse genres, making significant contributions to literature and the preservation of cultural heritage. The article examines his ambivalence or restlessness (kegelisahan) regarding the tension between regional and national identities in literature, as exemplified in his reflections and creative output. Ajip’s early life in a linguistically mixed region of West Java laid the foundation for his literary pursuits in both Sundanese and Indonesian. His works often oscillated between traditional …

Informative Integration Of Modern Spolia In Public Landscapes, Deniz Üçer Erduran Apr 2025

Informative Integration Of Modern Spolia In Public Landscapes, Deniz Üçer Erduran

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Spolia refers to repurposing components from older buildings into new constructions, a concept with a rich history. Traditionally, unique components were the primary focus; however, this ap- proach remains relevant today for mass-produced components. By diverting materials from waste streams, spolia preserves their inherent properties and facilitates the rapid transfer of stylistic fea- tures in the modern world. When a 1970s movie theatre in Moscow, Russia, was demolished in 2019, a substantial amount of steel was recycled, while brick and concrete were sent to landfills. This study investigates potential spolia options as an alternative to demolition. The research involved documenting …

An Architectural Query Of Anthropocene Era: Planned Obsolescence, H.Gül Aydın, Emel Birer Apr 2025

An Architectural Query Of Anthropocene Era: Planned Obsolescence, H.Gül Aydın, Emel Birer

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

After Modernity, the human has become the subject, and the world redefined by the human has turned into a painting. However, the efforts of human subjectivity to reveal the world in the Anthropocene Era, with negative practices such as the “planned obsolescence theory,” which is the research subject, even prepares for the end of its existence. According to the research hypothesis evaluated through the theory’s effect on architectural problems, “secular- ization should take place against planned obsolete architecture.” The research aims to show that positive feedback can be provided in society and ecology by reversing architectural consump- tion. It is …

Evaluation Of A Modern Architectural Building In Terms Of Sustainability: A Case Study Of Çorlu Municipality Building, Ayşe Kopuz, Ahmet Bal, Özlem Güney

Journal of Sustainable Construction Materials and Technologies

Corlu municipality building was built in 1984, by famous architects Maruf Önal and Hakkı Önel through modern architecture signs in Turkey. It was designed with a modest and rational approach, with meticulous construction, although it is a public building in line with a modern style. In terms of location, the municipality building was built in front of today's Cumhuriyet square, between the Kumyol Street and Omurtak Street, in the period when Salih Omurtak Street was just opened, during the years when the construction in Çorlu was not concentrated yet. In the project area, it was decided to demolish the Sücaettin …

Resignificación De Las Relaciones Sociales Patriarcales En Valor, Agravio Y Mujer De Ana Caro. Reconstruyendo La Realidad A Través De Un Análisis Interseccional (Camila Andrea Micán Rondón, Pp. 39-55), Camila Andrea Micán Rondón Apr 2025

Resignificación De Las Relaciones Sociales Patriarcales En Valor, Agravio Y Mujer De Ana Caro. Reconstruyendo La Realidad A Través De Un Análisis Interseccional (Camila Andrea Micán Rondón, Pp. 39-55), Camila Andrea Micán Rondón

Digitization refers to the creation of a digital copy of a text, image or other object. And if we make a copy of something, it's often to prevent its waste. It's a process which look like photocopying. We can digitize or scan silver photos, for example, to save them digitally or publish them online. In the art world, digitization makes it possible to save certain works of art from oblivion and deterioration. Paradoxically, it saves them, while at the same time falsifying them.

Until recently, the concept of an archive was something tangible and material, but now we're talking more …

A Revolutionary Curtain Call: Yiddish Theatre, The Jewish Enlightenment, And The Russian Revolution, Sidonie James Apr 2025

A Revolutionary Curtain Call: Yiddish Theatre, The Jewish Enlightenment, And The Russian Revolution, Sidonie James

Young Historians Conference

This paper explores the impact of Yiddish Theatre in Moscow and broader Russia in the era of the Russian Revolution as a Jewish cultural and political force. The intersection of the Russian Revolution and the Jewish Haskalah reformation created the space for Yiddish theatre, a cultural movement combining Jewish identity with revolutionary ideals, to thrive. Yiddish theatre became a space for community discourse and political critique during Stalin’s rule, preserving Russian-Jewish cultural identity amid growing Soviet hostility. By examining the Russian Jewish community and its relationship to Russian government and society through the lens of Yiddish theatre, this paper reveals …

Slavic Influences In The Soviet Adaptation Of The Fellowship Of The Rings, Martina Juričková Apr 2025

Slavic Influences In The Soviet Adaptation Of The Fellowship Of The Rings, Martina Juričková

Journal of Tolkien Research

In 1991 Leningrad TV published a dramatization miniseries based on the first volume of The Lord of the Rings, entitled Khraniteli (Хранители). Unfortunately, due to the turbulent political situation in the Soviet Union at that time, the series was only televised once, the idea of making sequels based off the other two volumes abandoned, and the whole project fell into oblivion until 2021, when the sucessor of Lenigrad TV uploaded Khraniteli to its youtube channel. Naturally, this aroused a lot of commotion among Tolkien fans who, comparing it to the better known Jackson’s adaptation, found it funny and ridiculous. This …

Bars, Barristers, And Bias: A Content Analysis Of Legal Plays, Evan Chartock

Media and Communication Studies Honors Papers

This content analysis paper investigates the portrayal of the legal profession onstage within legal dramas first performed in the twenty-first century. There has been no previous research that has focused on a comprehensive analysis of the specific content of legal dramas, so this study is exploratory in nature. This study emphasizes the importance of learning about the content characteristics of legal plays and legal characters. This content analysis seeks to answer two research questions. First, do playwrights of legal plays first performed between 2000-2024 belong to similar identity demographics, write about similar content, and/or have similar messaging regarding the notion …
