Comparison Of Outcomes After Bilateral Simultaneous Total Knee Arthroplasty Using Posterior-Substituting Versus Cruciate-Retaining Prostheses, Hong-Guang Liu, Wei Zhu, Zhen-Xiang Zhang

Objectives: To compare the effectiveness and safety of posterior-substituting (PS) with cruciate-retaining (CR) total knee prostheses after the elimination of confounding variables. Methods: Between January 2008 and June 2012, a total of 32 subjects who had bilateral arthritis of the knees agreed to have one knee replaced with a PS total knee design and the other with a CR design. In addition to postoperative complications, clinical outcomes (Knee Society Score, Range of Motion, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index, as well as radiographic findings) were evaluated preoperatively, and at 2-week, 3-month, 12-month, and 24-month follow-up. Environmental, public health, alternative food, and food justice advocates are working together to achieve incremental agricultural subsidy and nutrition assistance reforms that increase access to fresh fruits and vegetables. When it comes to targeting food and beverage products for increased regulation and decreased consumption, however, the priorities of various food reform movements diverge. This article argues that foundational legal issues, including preemption of state and local authority to protect the public's health and welfare, increasing First Amendment protection for commercial speech, and eroding judicial deference to legislative policy judgments, present a more promising avenue for collaboration across movements than discrete …

Shakespearean literature is an essential component of American literature and cultural consciousness, discusses material that is highly relevant to modern adolescents, and presents an ideal platform for creative learning across multiple intelligences. However, intimidated students are often reluctant to engage with this material. This Othello curriculum draws on progressive educational theory, strategies for teaching literacy to English Language Learners and Special Education students, and existing creative methods of teaching Shakespeare to circumvent this intimidation and engage 9th graders with Othello through the exploration of relevant themes, utilization of students' natural propensity for creative expression, and development of traditional English literacy …

The phenomenology of music is the science of studying sounds and their relationship with human beings. Conceived by the Romanian orchestra conductor Sergiu Celibidache, phenomenology of music has become a valuable source of knowledge for the orchestral conductor, offering tools that can lead to a deeper understanding of the score. In this paper I will offer an explanation of phenomenological method, applied to conducting based on my own experience, and an explanation of the basic ideas of “Celibidache’s Phenomenology of Music.”

The Islamic State has combined its extreme violence with digital and cyber technologies to produce and distribute globally videos recording atrocities it commits. This article argues that those in the Islamic State who make and distribute these atrocity videos are committing war crimes under international law. After introducing the unprecedented phenomenon the atrocity videos represent (I.), the article first examines the relationship between international law and propaganda in war and peace (II.) The article then argues the atrocity videos violate prohibitions in international humanitarian law and constitute war crimes (III.). The older adult population in Western Australia (WA) has significantly increased over the last decade and continues to grow, highlighting the importance of maintaining their health, wellbeing and independence. This may be achieved by facilitating active ageing, enabling older adults to continue to live meaningful and fulfilling lives, contribute positively to society, and lower the demand on costly health and human services. This research project concerns arts practices in healthcare settings and the encounter between artist, researcher, healthcare professional and institution. Rather than understanding arts practices as either therapeutic or recreational services, this research asks instead, what (else) can an arts practice do? This is accomplished by connecting two previously separate bodies of scholarship; health sociology and an art criticism of expanded arts practices. By connecting these bodies of scholarship, this inquiry offers a new conceptual language and orientation for arts and health practitioners distinct from the evidence-based practice model most prevalent in academic and professional discourses and consequently establishes a transdisciplinary …

This ethnography of media production explores the challenges of literally and figuratively visualising voice. The labour of a shared production and the distribution of the audio-visual documentary essays unfolded within a field of diverse, and at times, conflicting interests. For this reason, judicious attention to what I name ‘encounters’ of ‘political listening’ (Bickford 1996; Dreher 2009) provides one framework for theorising the challenges of researching with marginalised subjects and stories, and the contradictions of developing shared practices within proprietary contexts. In recent years the academic research relating to employee engagement has flourished. Despite the increase in engagement literature, there is a gap concerning employee engagement regarding support staff categories. This dissertation focuses of the minority grouping, support staff

The research methodology for this study is a quantitative method. In addition, questionnaires were administrated to ninety support staff working in Cork University Maternity Hospital, with seventy contributing to the data for this study. Analysis of questionnaires resulted in the identification of a number of findings.

Signal detection theory (SDT) provides a theoretical framework for describing performance on decision making tasks, and fuzzy signal detection theory (FSDT) extends this description to include tasks in which there are levels of uncertainty regarding the categorization of stimulus events. Specifically, FSDT can be used to quantify the degree to which an event is 'signal-like', i.e., the degree to which a stimulus event can be characterized by both signal and non-signal properties. For instance, an improvised explosive device (IED) poses little threat when missing key elements of its assembly (a stimulus of low, but not zero, signal strength) whereas the …

Many date the disillusionment of the United States with the international law and organization project to sometime after World War II. Actually, widespread American disillusionment with international law and organization began in 1914 with the outbreak of World War I. Many Americans became convinced that European civilization had failed to emerge from the excesses of state sovereignty and militarism. This essay illustrates the onset of American disillusionment with Europe and with international law and organization between 1914 and 1946.
