Historians have written a great deal about the American Civil War and, until recently, much of that scholarly activity has focused on military battles and the effectiveness of the Union and Confederate armies on the war’s outcome. During the past few decades, social historians have tried to dig beneath that narrative to situate the war in the eyes of American citizens and how that war affected their lives. With this, there has been a focus on the Northern and Southern homefronts, African Americans, and soldiers’ motivations to fight – all rooted in the wartime experience. On Friday, May 17, 2013, we watched the class of 2013 Honors Scholars at West Virginia University (WVU) enter the Honors Convocation to the sound of Non Nobis Domine. While certainly not our first Honors Scholars graduation since Keith had been running honors at WVU, it was nonetheless special. This cohort of graduates was the first freshman class to live in the specially built residence hall that houses the honors college administrative offices, each new freshman class of the honors college, and an apartment for faculty living in-residence.

French IV-V students read the Theater of the Absurd play Rhinocéros by Eugène Ionesco. The foci of this unit are more oriented toward history, politics, global awareness, and unexamined assumptions (les idées reçues) than theater as such. Students do, however, present most of the play in the Reader’s Theater style. The pre-reading activity introduces the final evaluation of the unit. Students first associate animals to ideologies and concepts. This first activity also allows the instructor to introduce the ideas fanaticism, totalitarianism, and conformism. This chapter explores the aspects of self-interest implicated by the US military prosecuting its own service members who violate the laws of war under different criminal charges than it prosecutes enemy belligerents who commit substantially similar offences. The chapter briefly explains how the US asserts criminal jurisdiction over its service members before turning to how the US military reports violations of the laws of war. It then sets out the US methodology for charging such violations as applied to its service members, and compares this methodology to that applied to those tried by military commissions. Background: Longer term studies of bioabsorbable screws for ACL reconstruction are reported, but results are specific to the exact screw material and design. Titanium and PLLA-HA screw outcomes have been compared only to 2 years.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the clinical and radiological outcomes of PLLAHA screw (BS) versus a titanium screw (TS), for hamstring tendon anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction over 5 years. We hypothesized that there are no differences in clinical scores, and tunnel widening, between the BS and the TS groups, and that the PLLA-HA screw as seen on MRI should show high …

In this era of expectation that school principals will lead continuous improvement initiatives in their schools, this study investigates if principals receive instruction in continuous improvement concepts, methods, and tools through their formal principal certification program. This research evaluates the evolution of school principal preparation programs in Kentucky over the period from 1994 to 2014, a time of great change in academic expectations and accountability in American public schools. This dissertation addresses the literary witches in American and Russian twentieth century literatures. It investigates why and to what effect images of witches and witchcraft are appropriated by individual authors in different historical situations. My study focuses on literary witches as personification of conspiratorial female power. Witches come in different forms, shapes, ages and colors. They possess contradictory powers. They can be evil or benevolent, old or young, mythological or historical, powerful or vulnerable, repellent or attractive but one constant remains: they are feared. When Actors Don’T Walk The Talk: Parasocial Relationships Moderate The Effect Of Actor-Character Incongruence, Riva Tukachinsky

The study examines the effect of a narrative that featured an actor playing a counterattitudinal role. Participants read an online magazine interview with a popular comedian and then watched a sitcom in which this actor played a role that was either consistent or inconsistent with his personal views. Parasocial relationships with the actor moderated the effect of actor-character incongruence. Specifically, incongruence was associated with lower support for narrative-related attitudes, but only among viewers with weak parasocial relationships. These results provide evidence of the existence of vicarious cognitive dissonance, wherein witnessing another person’s hypocritical behavior produces attitude change in the observer.

In the annals of American success stories, it’s hard to beat the life that Dwight D. Eisenhower made.

Yet this heroic figure was also a “natural man,” as one of the contributors to this volume of personal reminiscences suggests. Lady Dill was referring to Eisenhower’s humanity and lack of pretense. This Article will analyze light pollution that trespasses from one property onto another’s property, and the lack of an amicable way to resolve this issue through existing laws. The growth of oil production in West Texas has led to issues with individual landowners and research organizations regarding light emitted from oil rigging lights. Specifically, the McDonald Observatory is one research facility that has been negatively impacted by the increased nightglow from artificial lighting.

Access to quality emergency services is an essential component of the human right to health, but barriers to emergency care are found throughout Africa and the wider world. Data to support the development of emergency care are essential to improve access to care and further infrastructure development. We undertook this study to understand the community's emergency care needs and the barriers they face when trying to access care and to engage community members with developing high impact solutions to expand access to essential emergency services.

In 1920, French dramatist René Morax authored a four-hour biblical stage drama on the life of David. Inspired by structures of Hindu theatre, he wrote many short scenes that would be executed in rapid succession. Morax wanted incidental music between scenes throughout the play; however, he completed the play in December, 1920 with only six months until the work’s scheduled premiere. When several composers declined Morax’ request to compose the music because of the time constraints, he asked conductor Ernest Ansermet and composer Igor Stravinsky for their recommendation. Both of them recommended then twenty-eight year old Arthur Honegger (1892-1955), a …

This symposium inquires into a critical question in leadership preparation: "How do we prepare educational leadership candidates to work as change agents in institutions guided by socially unjust policies where professionals act with limited discretion?" The symposium uses an ethnodramatic case, adult learning techniques, and an expert panel to ignite dialogue and explore the gap between our field's vision for socially just schools and the demoralizing conditions where too many students learn and teachers teach.

Schnur, a graduate student in history at USF at the time, created this booklet as a study guide to assist in preparations for his comprehensive examinations in the USF History M.A. program. Although most of the focus is on historians prior to the 1970s, this booklet does provide biographical vignettes that may assist those interested in learning about various schools of thought in the American historical profession. Most of the information in this handbook came from Schnur's notes in various classes, as well as other helpful sources, such as the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

In contrast to medical malpractice, legal malpractice is a phenomenon that has attracted little attention from empirically-oriented scholars. This paper is part of a larger study of legal malpractice claiming and litigation. Given the evidence on the frequency of legal malpractice claims, there are surprisingly few legal malpractice cases that result in jury verdicts. There are many possible explanations for this, one of which reflects the perception that lawyers are held in such low esteem by potential jurors that they risk harsh treatment by jurors when they are defendants in legal malpractice trials. This thesis explores adaptation through translation in Luis Riaza’s dramatic text, Antígona...¡Cerda!. I have translated this play from Spanish to English and staged it at New College of Florida. The first chapter describes the sociohistorical and cultural context in which Riaza wrote the play as well as an explanation and analysis of his style of work. My translation of the play is the second chapter, which includes notes on directorial and translation choices. The final chapter is a reflection on the performance and the rehearsal process including an explanation on specific actor technique. A copy of the performance is attached …
