Playing With Philosophy: Gestures, Performance, P4c And An Art Of Living, L D'Olimpio, C Teschers Jan 2015

Playing With Philosophy: Gestures, Performance, P4c And An Art Of Living, L D'Olimpio, C Teschers

Philosophy Conference Papers

John Dewey’s Art as Experience (1934) explores how art develops out of everyday experience. Imbued with the pragmatism of William James, Dewey widens the discourse of aesthetics so as to recognise that our creation, experience and appreciation of the aesthetic is linked intrinsically to being human. By encouraging the natural playfulness of children, advocates of Philosophy for Children (P4C) may creatively engage students to think, reflect and be more aware of the impact their gestures have on others. One of the most fundamental aspects of the embodied human life is human interaction that is based on expressions, what Schmid (2000b) …

Designing Social Change: Inquiry-Based Practice & Teaching, Donald Tarallo Jan 2015

Designing Social Change: Inquiry-Based Practice & Teaching, Donald Tarallo

Art and Art History Faculty Publications

This paper shares an exploratory and inquiry-based graphic design project and the resultant pedagogic approach that offers arts and design educators ideas on teaching to instigate positive social change. The author summarizes a year-long fellowship project where he worked as a change agent in service to a partnership of six non-profit, after-school arts programs in Providence, Rhode Island who are organized as the Providence Youth Arts Collaborative (PYAC).

The intention of this project was two-fold. The primary effort was to investigate ways graphic design can be strategically used to seed interest and empower youth to make positive choices with how …

Reading, Writing And Relevancy: Integrating 3r'S Into Stem, Shirley Lefever-Davis, Cathy J. Pearman

College of Education

A recent editorial in the New York Times (Editorial, 2013) raised an awareness of a growing demand for more college graduates in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. This fact, coupled with a declining interest on the part of students in those areas (ACT, 2013) necessitates a dramatic and urgent need for K-12 curriculum that fosters an interest in these fields and promotes skills that facilitate success. Many educators believe the solution is a curriculum steeped in a problem-based approach that integrates strong communication skills (Sanders, 2009). This article will describe the importance and essence of making STEM …

The Grand Gleaners Project Analysis, Kara D. Cook, Cody Gallagher, Elliott Holzman, Jonathan Neracher, Emily Miotke

LIB 322: Wicked Problems of Sustainability

The Heartside Gleaning Initiative (HGI) is a Grand Rapids based non-profit organization that collects unsold produce from the city’s two farmers markets and distributes it to the low-income residents of the Heartside Neighborhood. Through their efforts they increase access to healthy and local foods as well as combat food waste in the Heartside Community. Seeing the value of this work, we, an interdisciplinary team of Grand Valley State University students, sought to further the mission of the HGI by focusing predominantly on two vital aspects of any non-profit business: promoting and funding. In the winter semester of 2015 we established …

Du Chaos À La Création : Une Expérience De Pédagogie Énactive Pour Expérimenter Le Processus Créatif En Performance, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

L’Incorporation Animale Chez L’Acteur, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau Jan 2015

L’Incorporation Animale Chez L’Acteur, Ivan Magrin-Chagnolleau

Presidential Fellows Articles and Research

"Grace To Be Born And To Live As Variously As Possible": Tracing The Influence Of The Visual And Performing Arts On The Poetry Of Frank O'Hara, Elizabeth Grice Jan 2015

"Grace To Be Born And To Live As Variously As Possible": Tracing The Influence Of The Visual And Performing Arts On The Poetry Of Frank O'Hara, Elizabeth Grice

Honors Thesis Collection

My thesis traces the influence of the three peripheral art forms on Frank O'Hara's poetry—visual art, cinema, and music. Jumping in and out of abstraction through catalogues that capture New York City as gritty and gilded, O'Hara diverts attention away from the heightened emotional state of the narrator. He additionally channels the fragmentary nature of Abstract Expressionism, jump cuts, and improvisational jazz. By the time of his death at the ripe age of forty, O'Hara produced a body of work as multifaceted as his artistic interests.

The Allincluding Language Of Ulysses, Hannah Degner Jan 2015

The Allincluding Language Of Ulysses, Hannah Degner

Honors Thesis Collection

Study of the text of Ulysses, Joyce's other major works, critical texts, biographical works and annotations to consider the manner in which Joyce's flexible, whimsical and almost always unconventional stylistic experiments tell a fuller story of life than established narrative styles. Joyce's inclusions and innovations make the novel an active process of engagement, puzzling, and probing--a process that brings the reader closer to the text, and the ideas within, through the reader's active engagement.

Aftershocks: The Human Impact Of U.S. Deportations To Post-Earthquake Haiti, University Of Chicago Law School - Global Human Rights Clinic, University Of Miami Law School Immigration Clinic, University Of Miami Law School Human Rights Clinic

Global Human Rights Clinic

Haiti still reels from the devastating effects of the January 12, 2010 earthquake that killed over 300,000 people, rendered one in seven Haitians homeless, and wreaked $9 billion of damage in a country whose 2009 GDP was only $7 billion. At least 85,000 people still live in internally displaced person camps (IDP camps) and many have moved back into shoddy structures that would not survive another earthquake. The cholera epidemic that struck Haiti in the wake of the earthquake has been characterized by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as “the worst cholera outbreak in recent history,” killing …

Transpersonal Space/Time Through The Arts, Lisa Herman Jan 2015

Transpersonal Space/Time Through The Arts, Lisa Herman

International Journal of Transpersonal Studies

As transpersonal researchers and practitioners work to articulate the meaning of transpersonal individually and collectively, I suggest conceptualizing transpersonal space/time as real in a physically felt sense. This embodied knowing is best practiced and expressed through the arts. The premise is situated within a larger field using the term liminal as a parallel meaning construct for transpersonal I present my own work referencing a range of disciplines where scholars and practitioners using the terms liminal, transpersonal and others, artfully express their understanding of extra-ordinary experience. A personal example through creative writing is offered demonstrating the way my body/mind inquiring into …
