Singapore has come a long way, since her beginnings as a sleepy fishing village and a tiny Malay settlement ruled by the Sultan of Johor. Sir Stamford Raffles first arrived in Singapore in 1819 and immediately recognised that its strategic location along the Straits of Malacca would be useful to the British in developing an alternative to challenge Dutch influence and monopoly in the region. During British colonial rule, Singapore developed into an important free port and trade city, an essential trait that continues to feature heavily in Singapore’s economic development to this day.

The Late Works Of Dame Ethel Smyth: A Musical Microcosm Of Interwar British Culture, Emily Morin
The Late Works Of Dame Ethel Smyth: A Musical Microcosm Of Interwar British Culture, Emily Morin
Spring 2015, British Society and Culture
This paper examines the late musical compositions of Dame Ethel Smyth in the context of British society and culture between the two World Wars. It focuses on Smyth's large-scale works, especially her operas The Boatswain's Mate (1914) and Entente Cordiale (1923-1924) and her oratorio The Prison (1930). Using these works as examples of the composer's mature style, I draw attention to a number of Smyth's original artistic choices as well as her sophisticated use of social commentary. Also considered in this research are certain anticipated roles for women as composers at the time, Smyth's other passions and pursuits, and her …

Faculty Research and Creative Activity
State and national initiatives place an increased emphasis on both students’ exposure to diverse texts and teachers’ integration of English/language arts and history/social studies. The intent is for students to critically examine diverse accounts and perspectives of the same historical event or era. Critical examination can be accomplished through teachers’ purposeful juxtaposition of age-appropriate, engaging trade books and relevant informational texts, such as primary source materials. To guide interested elementary and middle level teachers, researchers can evaluate trade books for historical representation and suggest divergent or competing narratives that compel students to scrutinize diverse perspectives. Researchers can locate germane primary …

The Effects Of Direct Speech Instruction On English Language Learners For The Celdt 4-Picture Narrative, Alexander Salazar
The Effects Of Direct Speech Instruction On English Language Learners For The Celdt 4-Picture Narrative, Alexander Salazar
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
The necessity for English Language Learners to meet the language proficiency required for designation as a Reclassified Fluent English Proficient (RFEP) student warranted a reevaluation of the current practices of speech instruction. The research highlighted the importance of direct instruction for the speaking 4-Picture Narrative assessment of the California English Language Development Test (CELDT), as well as promoted the necessity of combining strategies and student ability levels in order to help English Language Learners of the 9-12 grade span acquire the oral academic language necessary for attaining a proficient score of Early Advanced on the exam. The findings found that …
