Performing Radical Black Womanhood: Black Women Artists As Critical Public Pedagogues, Nicole April Carter
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This project draws from research on critical public pedagogy to explore the pedagogical experiences of Black women artists and performers from Detroit, Michigan, using qualitative methodological components from autoethnography, ethnography, phenomenology, and art-based inquiry. The researcher used criterion sampling in order to select six of the women who were part of this project. The researcher attempts to explore how Black women counter stereotypical representations of Black womanhood, the role that art and performance play in maintaining or countering those representations, as well as how artistic endeavors transform the social, cultural, and political experiences of Black women. The findings demonstrate that …

The purpose of this performance and honors thesis presentation is to showcase my personal growth as an artist and singer throughout my undergraduate career at Western Michigan University as well as present to an audience of varying levels of musical knowledge, a cumulative collection of works from the mezzo-soprano opera repertoire and art song from the Baroque to Modern era. Works from the following composers were prepared and performed in this concert: Antonio Vivaldi, Franz Schubert, Johannes Brahms, Felix Mendelssohn, Gioachino Rossini, Leslie Adams, Maurice Ravel, Richard Strauss, and the comedy duo Flanders and Swann. Public Display Of Contextually Relevant And Useful Information For Co-Located Devices, Alexander Faaborg

A computing system is described that aggregates information collected from a group of mobile devices that happen to be co-located and in the presence of an output device, such as a display. The system identifies similarities shared across the users of the group and based on the shared interests, obtains contextually relevant and useful information that will likely be appreciated by each of the users in the group. The system then configures the output device to present the contextually relevant and useful information for consumption by the group at just the right time.
