This essay contends that W.B. Yeats’s quest for beauty in art has far more in common with Walter Pater’s aesthetic views than is generally acknowledged. This article particularly focuses on Greek art, which provided both writers with paradigms with which to articulate their aesthetic theories. Yeats made ample use of Pater’s distinction between Ionian and Dorian art, and this opposition may in fact lie at the root of Yeats’s esoteric system set down in A Vision and based upon two contrary types of individuals, civilizations, and religions. Music, Setting, Voice: Maeterlinck's Pelléas Et Mélisande And Yeats's The Countess Cathleen, Michael Mcateer

International Yeats Studies

Maurice Maeterlinck’s Pelléas et Mélisande is one of the finest and most influential works of French Symbolist drama from the 1890s. This essay examines the close affinities between the play and W. B. Yeats’s The Countess Cathleen as it was first performed in Dublin in 1899. In illustrating these affinities, it draws attention to performances of Pelléas et Mélisande that Yeats attended in London in 1898 and 1904. Examining features of Maeterlinck’s play and The Countess Cathleen in close detail, the essay develops Katharine Worth’s general observations on the aspects of theatre that Maeterlinck and Yeats shared. Querying the Past: LGBTQ Maine Oral History Project Collection

Penny Rich is a 70-year old lesbian living in Portland, Maine. She recieved a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Southern Maine. She is known for her involvement in major social events such as Portland Pride and the Women's Coffeehouse, as well as her experiences with gay bar culture throughout the 60's and 70's. She spends her time socializing, exercising, reading, and getting involved in local political and social issues that affect the LGBTQ+ community in Portland, Maine.

It tells the tale of two parallel love stories threatened by the dangers of prejudice and war, and how these couples confront their fears for a chance to find happiness. The show features music composed by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II, and book by Hammerstein II and Joshua Logan.

Throughout its history, England and its writers have created its national identity out of thin air. Some writers such as William of Malmesbury and John Milton have consciously constructed their imagined Englands, while other authors during the medieval and early modern periods are subtler, but whose works reflect the historical and cultural moment, the fears, desires, and anxieties about kingship, tyranny, heirs, and stability, that existed during that time. Little scholarship has focused on the devil’s role in these constructions, his political nature, and how this nature is used in constructing nationalistic arguments. Precarious Democracy: "It Can't Happen Here" As The Federal Theatre's Site Of Mass Resistance, Macy Donyce Jones

The scholarly consensus of the Federal Theatre Project (FTP) is that it was a massive undertaking set to employ theatre professionals during the Great Depression. That undertaking resulted in vibrant, relevant theatre that helped to build a theatre audience across the nation. Outside of the overview-style scholarship, specialized studies have delved into the FTP as a community-building enterprise, a site of racial/ethnic study, and an essential new play creator.

My scholarship fills a hole that previous FTP scholarship has left open. The FTP was a political machine engaged in producing pro-American propaganda. That aspect of production has been largely left …

A story circle on the history of music in Dayton was moderated by Dawne Dewey and Chris Wydman from the Wright State Special Collections and Archives. We used to get fog a lot worse than we did now, so I used to get out and walk the white line with a flashlight. He’d drive right behind. [Karla: so you were walking?] Well I mean they had fenders then so we would ride on the fenders. I went with grandpa every Friday night. Grandpa was a Western Cowboy movie freak. So they had Westerns at the movies in Colusa every Friday night. If anybody wanted to go with grandpa to the movies they just had to show up.
