Big Picture, Karl Hinze
Big Picture, Karl Hinze
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Big Picture is a contemporary Broadway-style musical comedy with a story adapted from Claudio Monteverdi’s 1643 opera L’incoronazione di Poppea (“The Coronation of Poppea”). Monteverdi’s opera is a story of lust, power, and corruption, set in the imperial Roman Empire. The opera follows the love affair of Emperor Nero and his mistress Poppea as they conspire to banish Nero’s wife, the empress Ottavia, and crown Poppea queen. Meanwhile, Ottone, who is also in love with Poppea, becomes wrapped up in the empress’s plan to have Poppea killed. In this adaptation, with a book by Susan Murray and lyrics by Patrick …
Music As A Bridge And Platform For Personal, Cultural, And Societal Change: The Work Of Billie Holiday, Adrienne Auer
Music As A Bridge And Platform For Personal, Cultural, And Societal Change: The Work Of Billie Holiday, Adrienne Auer
Senior Theses
Billie Holiday came into this life faced with many hardships and struggles. She was raised with harsh realities and hard choices inherent in an inequitable culture that allowed discrimination, segregation, disenfranchisement, and continued acts of oppression and brutality. Her life story, her musicality, her songwriting, her autobiography Lady Sings the Blues, and the feeling that she put into almost everything she touched created a lasting legacy. This essay examines how Billie Holiday was able to channel her emotionality and her life experiences into her art. It draws from Billie Holiday’s autobiography and her songs, from the work of noted …

Passage, Unité Nationale Et Écriture Du Mythe Dans Falagountou De Yamba Élie Ouédraogo, Alain Joseph Sissao
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The metaphor of national unity through the passages of the eponymous hero Falagountou Yamba Elie Ouédraogo: myth of unity or unity of the myth? Yamba Elie Ouédraogo brushed a gargantuan romantic mural in her latest novel Falagountou. Falagountou appears in many ways like a quest for the Grail of identities to form identity. These passages of the hero mythical half-man, half-Hercules – like the epic of Gilgamesh – crosses different regions of Burkina Faso who report a culmination of the intermediate time, in-between, to apprehend modalities that govern the construction of crises, utopias, individual projections. In this, the novelist is …

This article takes an analytical look at the evolution of drama writing in Burkina Faso from 1980 to the present. Based mainly on a corpus of five dramatic texts of five renowned authors, it shows how in form as in content, the theatrical text has undergone important changes that respond to a socio-cultural rooting need but also a determination to stick to current realities. The study is based on methodological resources of the theatrical text analyses resulting from mixed approaches combining the work of Anne Ubersfeld, Patrice Pavis and Sylvie Chalaye.

Théâtre Burkinabè Contemporain Et Dramaturgie De L’Entre-Deux : Aristide Tarnagda Et Sophie Kam, Christophe Konkobo
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
What do contours of contemporary Burkinabe drama look like? By attempting to answer such a question, we analyzed a number of plays written by both Aristide Tarnagda and Sophie Heidi Kam, two young playwrights from Burkina Faso. The works examined in this article show first and foremost aesthetic approaches and thematic concerns not often seen in previous dramatic writings. The contemporary plays are always set in symbolically defined “empty spaces” where characters seek to define their identity against internal and external pressures.

For the survey of the poems of our corpus, we will be inspired by the literary stylistics. By means of the structurings axiologiques, it will be possible to us to seize the significance of the poems that resides in the passage of the attachment to the detachment, of the melioration to the pejoration (poetry of Somaïla Sawadogo), of the umbilical dependence («mature stomach») to the child’s biologic autonomy (poetry of Bernadette Dao), of servitude to the liberty, of State of exception in State of right (poetry of Babou Paulin Bamouni). In spite of their adherence to different times, a thematic …

Oralité Et Création : Les Modalités D’Insertion Des Genres Urbains Dans La Production Orale Bobo, Alain Sanou
Présence Francophone: Revue internationale de langue et de littérature
The new genres of the literature pose to researchers the challenge to constantly adjust their analytical tool to understand not only their function, but also how the social body integrate these new elements. The objective searched in this study is to see how an urban creature, the Jɛkulu, has been gradually integrated in the Bobo creature. This study is the continuation of a research conducted since some years on the new oral genres in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso and how they contribute to the consolidation of an urban identity.

Operationalizing Humility: A Model Of Situational Humility For Christian College Student Leaders, Scott T. Barrett
Operationalizing Humility: A Model Of Situational Humility For Christian College Student Leaders, Scott T. Barrett
All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research study explored how college student leaders operationalize humility in their actions and what leads individuals to act with situational humility. There is a rise in narcissistic tendencies in college students (Twenge, Konrath, Campbell, & Bushman, 2008a, 2008b) and a decline in overall character traits (Burns, 2012; Hunter, 2000; Liddell & Cooper, 2012). Opposite the vice of narcissism sits the virtue of humility (Emmons, 2000; Exline & Geyer, 2004; Peterson & Seligman, 2004; Tangney, 2000). Using a grounded theory approach, the researcher looked to discover the process of humility development. Twenty six in depth interviews were conducted at three …

A Revitalized Educational Conception Of Growth In The 21st Century For Contemporary Education Praxis In Nebraska, Scott Blum
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Theses and Other Student Research
My dissertation argues for a revitalized conception of growth in the 21st century and contemporary education. Through reconstruction, re-conceptualizing, and re-emphasis of growth, this revitalization attends to acute challenges in schooling and can impact praxis in education today. This pragmatic and philosophical work places a revitalized conception of growth as the purpose of education and, to the extent that education is life, continual growth as a process for living.
John Dewey provided his conception of growth during the 19th and 20th centuries as he valued the natural capacities a human being possesses for experiencing life. He recognized …

The Financial Crisis As A Religious Crisis, Robert H. Nelson
The Financial Crisis As A Religious Crisis, Robert H. Nelson
Journal of International Business and Law
Among the important factors in the financial crisis of 2008 and 2009 was a large ethical breakdown in the financial sector that preceded it. The sources of good ethical behavior are multiple but religion ranks high among them. In thinking about the role of religion, most people think first of Judaism, Christianity and other traditional religions. The concept of religion should be extended, however, to include "secular religions" which were among the most powerful religious influences of the twentieth century. This paper argues that many people on Wall Street once believed in an American "civil religion" that was grounded in …

Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon
Youth-Adult Partnerships In Work With Youth: An Overview, Heather Ramey, Heather Lawford, Wolfgang Vachon
Journal of Youth Development
Youth-adult partnerships in child and youth services engage the participants in collaborative, shared decision making, in areas such as governance, program planning and implementation, and advocacy. However, these partnerships often occur in isolation, and fail to engage in potentially useful, larger conversations about theory and research. Therefore, in an effort to provide common grounds for understanding and engaging in such partnerships, we offer an overview of current literature. We discuss definitions and discourses, describe models of youth-adult partnerships, and briefly consider current research on potential benefits for youth, adults, organizations, and communities. We also present challenges and promising practices for …

Hiding Or Out? Lesbian And Gay Educators Reveal Their Experiences About Their Sexual Identities In Their K-12 Schools, Steven D. Hooker
Journal of Global Education and Research
This qualitative study explored the ways in which lesbian and gay educators, in the Midwest part of the country, negotiate their sexual identities in their school settings. Ten gay and lesbian public and Catholic school educators from rural, suburban, and urban schools were interviewed. The purpose of this study was to determine how gay and lesbian teachers negotiate their identities and how those negotiated identities affect their relationships in their school communities. Four gay and lesbian teachers and two gay administrators from public schools were interviewed about their experiences in their school settings. Additionally, a focus group of five Catholic …
