Canadian Military History
The Canadian War Museum supports developmental research. This article is a by-product of the author’s continuing research into Canadian casualty records of the Korean War. This research helps to create a better picture of the makeup of the Canadian Army Special Force in Korea. When completed, it will shed greater light on when, where, and under what circumstances the 516 Canadians who are listed in the Korean War Book of Remembrance died. The research consists of a full review of the service records of Canadian military personnel who died in Korea or in support of the war from 1950 to …

The Horse's Ass: A Survey Of Comediology, William M. Fisk
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
What is comedy? Can someone learn to be funny? Are there rules or guidelines for the production of laughter, the universal language? This paper, which outlines an investigation of successful comedians and the production of a short film, determines to aggregate as many of the relevant prerequisites of inducing giggles as possible, especially as they relate to the audiovisual medium of cinema.

Found Missing: Fugitive Slaves, Jailer Ads, And Surveillance In Antebellum New Orleans, Tara L. Garbutt
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This paper explores fugitive slave advertisements from the pages of the New Orleans Argus in 1828. As the main repository for runaway slave advertisements in New Orleans at the time, the Argus played a critical role in policing and surveillance of the city’s enslaved population just as New Orleans was becoming the largest slave market in the South. Using the Argus as well as historians’ accounts of the city, this thesis argues that as the market in enslaved people grew, slave owners depended upon local jailers in tandem with papers like the Argus, to police the enslaved population. The large …

“La Frida No Envejeció, Yo Soy La Frida Envejecida”. La Ultima Performance De Pedro Lemebel, Fernando A. Blanco
Faculty Journal Articles

A Study Of The Nature And Impact Of Shona And Chinese Rhyming Words/Phrases, Herbert Mushangwe, Muchinei Musona
Chinese Language Teaching Methodology and Technology
Pairs of rhyming words/phrases in Chinese and Shona were investigated in an attempt to bring out the effect of such words to the teaching and learning of Chinese language. The pairs were grouped in accordance to their effects and nature of relationship. The selection of the words was based on samples obtained during classroom teaching. Students’ reaction to Chinese words automatically tells the story of the effect of such rhyming words. For instance, for embarrassing rhyming words learners naturally shy out to pronounce the words or they laugh instead of imitating the teacher. It is clear that the study of …

Manipulated Manipulation: The Political Origins And Implications Of Shakespeare's Henry V, Kate Morton
Manipulated Manipulation: The Political Origins And Implications Of Shakespeare's Henry V, Kate Morton
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Shakespeare’s Henry V has long been one of the most ambiguous adaptations of the story of England’s most celebrated historical figure: King Henry V. This adaptation raises the question of why Shakespeare presents Henry V in a way that not only differs significantly from the other accounts of Henry V’s life, but is also entirely ambiguous as to whether this presentation of Henry V’s character is optimistic or pessimistic in nature. In my thesis, I will argue that the ambiguities present in Henry V are actually a result of Shakespeare's own stress over the political succession looming over England at …

Known worldwide for its passionate musicality, impressive technique and expansive repertoire, the Shanghai Quartet melds traditional Chinese folk music, masterpieces of Western musical literature and cutting-edge contemporary works. This renowned quartet continues its tradition of expanding the musical palette of its audiences by introducing Yiwen Lu, acclaimed young master of the erhu, a two-stringed instrument whose versatile, expressive tone is an essential element of Chinese folk music and culture. Lu’s virtuosity allows her to blend techniques and styles – modern and traditional, Eastern and Western –defying expectations for this “simple” instrument.

Theatre for the Community: A Practical Application
This paper serves to synthesize and reflect upon my Creative Honors Capstone project entitled “Theatre for the Community: A Practical Application.” The initial steps of the project included research into community based theatre and community outreach. This research was then used to inspire the process necessary for a fully realized production of Annie Baker’s Body Awareness, structured with community collaboration in mind. In this way, Body Awareness’ process acted as my first attempt at the practical application of my research. This paper both acts as the exploration of the concept of creating and …

Science Theater As Steam: A Case Study Of "Save It Now", Christopher D. Davidson, Willard Simms
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
What are the markers of a successful STEAM program? How and when can educators be reasonably sure that an interdisciplinary unit or project, rich in both the sciences and the arts, has delivered on its implicit promise – by adding value to a student’s education in ways that are beyond the scope of traditional discipline-specific learning? I attempt to address this question with a case study of Theatre of Will’s “Save It Now,” a pilot program for 4th, 5th and 6th graders at eight Los Angeles public schools that integrates theater arts, music and the STEM …

A Brief History Of Stem And Steam From An Inadvertent Insider, Lisa G. Catterall
The Transdisciplinary STEAM+ Journal
This article traces a history of STEM and STEAM from the perspective of someone involved in arts integration research for the last 35 years, and proposes a vision for the next steps. It also provides an assessment of the risks inherent in current trends of STEAM roll-out in schools, from the lack of resources for professional development to the burgeoning market in STEAM kits and activity books that do not lead to the original learning goals of STEAM.

Reflections Of A Doctoral Research On Knowledge Management (Km) Through An Afrocentric Lens In A Nigerian Oil Corporation, Okeoma John-Paul Okeke
The African Journal of Information Systems
This paper focuses on the reflections of a doctoral research that evaluated the challenges of the adoption and implementation of a knowledge management (KM) initiative through the experiences of the knowledge champions. The African/Nigerian socio-cultural view was used to explore the narrative accounts of the knowledge champions. A case study research was carried out using qualitative approaches. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used in data analysis. The findings demonstrated the ability to ground KM adoption within a socio-cultural specific context helped in making sense of the organizational KM experience. The paper serves as an academic expression to the current generation …
Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald
Wildlife Policy And Conservation: An Interdisciplinary Historical Perspective, Catherine C. Macdonald
Open Access Dissertations
It is widely recognized that historical data about human interactions with the natural world is critical to understanding anthropogenic environmental change over time (McNeill, 2001). However, the potential contribution of interdisciplinary historical perspectives to wildlife conservation problems remains largely unexplored. Human-wildlife interactions are informed by a variety of factors, including the scientific and ecological literacy of human populations, human values, the availability of habitat and resources for human and animal populations, and the types of resource conflicts taking place (or likely to take place) (Treves et al., 2006). The role of historical interactions in shaping present attitudes and conflicts can …
