Early in the twentieth century, what should have been a most unlikely friendship curiously evolved into a lifelong amiable relationship between world-renowned filmmaker Cecil B. DeMille and David O. McKay, President of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In some ways, the two men were polar opposites. DeMille was an icon in the twentieth-century film industry who directed seventy motion pictures in an illustrious career that spanned over four decades. Dwelling in the midst of “Babylon” (Los Angeles), he was referred to as “Mr. Hollywood.” McKay presided from the heart of Latter-day Saint conservatism, Salt Lake City, dedicated …

Tracking The Evolution Of The Companionate Marriage Ideal In Early Modern Comedies, Madison L. Pierce

This thesis examines the socially constructed ideal of companionate marriage in Elizabethan and Jacobean England through four dramas by Christopher Marlowe, William Shakespeare, John Fletcher, Thomas Dekker and Thomas Middleton. It probes the question of how these theatrical productions of early modern England fit within or defy the emerging social trends regarding companionate marriage. It uses socioeconomic statuses, religious affiliations, and emerging notions of race as lenses through which to analyze the romantic couples depicted in these plays. The results of this study indicate that, while exact authorial intentions remain unknown, these plays served as proponents of the companionate marriage …

C'est un lieu commun de la critique dix-huitiémiste d'opposer les partisans d'Athènes à ceux de Sparte. Cet article préfère se concentrer sur les dissensions au sein du "camp" philospartiate à travers trois de ses principales figures (Mably, Rousseau, Helvétius). Le "modèle" spartiate était en réalité très fluide, car il s'agissait d'un enjeu théorique et polémique majeur. Cette brève étude montre que le modèle historique ne peut se subordonner à la philosophie politique. Si l'on refuse de considérer la réflexion sur Sparte comme un discours second, il devient possible de révéler les rapports souvent occultés entre modèle politique et modèle sexuel.

Primary biological aerosol particles (PBAP) encompass many particle types that are derived from several biological kingdoms. These aerosol particles can be composed of both whole living units such as pollen, bacteria, and fungi, as well as from mechanically formed particles, such as plant debris. They constitute a significant proportion of the overall atmospheric particle load and have been linked with adverse health issues and climatic effects on the environment. Traditional methods for their analysis have focused on the direct capture of PBAP before subsequent laboratory analysis. In The Black Arts Movement: Literary Nationalism in the 1960s and 1970s, James Smethurst writes that “Black arts cultural nationalism draws on a long history.” He describes the cultural nationalist stance we associate with Black Arts as involving a concept of liberation and self-determination that entails some notion of the development or recovery of a “true” national culture,” conveying “an already existing folk or popular culture,” often relying on recognizable African elements. This dissertation traces scenes of Christian-Muslim conversion across representative works by William Shakespeare, Robert Daborne, Philip Massinger, and Richard Brome to examine how the popular drama of the early seventeenth century participates in English political and ecclesiastical discourses about the meaning of interfaith conversion and its stakes for the construction and stability of late-Reformation English national identity. I argue that the structural and stylistic changes that define each drama’s distinct presentation of interfaith conversion may be understood as engaged in the still-evolving debates over the Church of England’s sacramental theology and ceremonial practices—the very ritual actions that could render the …

This document explores Dr. Leonard Falcones impact on euphonium playing in the United States as both a teacher and an advocate of the instrument. A Sicilian-born immigrant, Falcone spent forty years as director of bands at Michigan State University and euphonium and tuba professor. As a baritonist, Falcone earned early praise for his technique and musicianship from notable figures in the wind band community such as John Philip Sousa and Edwin Franko Goldman. Despite efforts of Vision 2020 in India, the 2001 Andhra Pradesh Eye Disease Study (APEDS) extrapolated that approximately 18.7 million blind people resided in India and projected an increase to 31.6 million blind people by 2020. Within the Andhra Pradesh state itself, the preventable blindness population had increased from approximately 1,143,150 people in 1990 to 1,402,264 people in 2001, against reformation attempts by the National Program for Control of Blindness. Of this, cataracts were consistently the leading cause of avoidable blindness. Numerous public health studies have been conducted to outline factors that preclude treatment of avoidable cataract blindness in the …

In this dissertation, I investigate the subjective experience of stuttering. I use two distinct methodologies to look at two different aspects of the stuttering experience. In the first paper, I use a post-structural qualitative research methodology to better understand the experience of passing as fluent. In the second paper, I use the experience sampling method to quantify the mental and physical effort, what I call spontaneity, of stuttered speech.When a person who stutters can hide their stuttering to the extent that others do not know they stutter, they are said to pass as fluent. By the turn of the twentieth century, circuses had established themselves as entertainment giants throughout the United States and much of Europe. With thousands of workers and animals traveling every day in the “tented city,” the circus constituted a unique workplace. The circus was also a highly transient workplace, with a long history of exploiting its workers. As the golden age of the circus began in the 1870s, marked by a move to the railroad shows and use of big top tents, workers became part of a huge transient community that had roots only in the winter months. Antonio Salieri (1750-1825) was a well-respected composer who served the Hapsburg court in Vienna as Hofkapellmeister for thirty-six years, from 1788-1824; his students included such luminaries as Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827), Franz Schubert (1797-1828), Johann Nepomuk Hummel (1778-1837), and Maria Theresia Paradis (1759-1824). Today, he is remembered mostly for his operas, and for his rivalry and friendship with Mozart. Salieris oratorios have received less attention from scholars than his other works. Nonprofit organizations exist to meet community needs—often competing against 1.5 million other nonprofits for resources (e.g., money and staff). Consequently, these charitable organizations rely on volunteers to support critical functions, such as fundraising and service provision. Without effective volunteer recruitment strategies, nonprofits may fail to attract the human capital needed for these functions. Furthermore, undergraduate students—conduits of the democratic purpose of higher education—represent a special group of volunteers (who also volunteer at twice the rate of their non-college attending peers). Understanding the volunteer motivations of undergraduate students enrolled in liberal arts colleges provides implications for future research, volunteer recruitment efforts …
