The purpose of this thesis is to explore the development of the film score and its artistic effect, particularly from the Sci-fi and Western film genres. I discuss the beginning of film as an art form which incorporated sound with moving image. I examine the aspects of film scores, particularly of the two Western films that I discuss, which are able to establish narrative through composing music from landscape. By adapting A Death in Venice in the modern day, I re-center the work in the modern conversation about homosexual love while discussing parallels involving the divine and the human, the artist and their art, and views on homosexuality seen today and years ago in Ancient Greece. Thomas Mann’s work draws upon themes common in Greek tragic theatre to create a piece meant to serve as a warning to artists who might wish to over-indulge themselves in the pursuit of their work. The philosophy of food is an expansive topic, but most people recognize it for its contributions to ethics rather than aesthetics. Examining the potential categorization of food as art leads to a fuller understanding of art on its own terms, especially within a twentieth/twenty-first century, post-Duchampian context. Conceptual art in particular builds on a framework that espouses the concept as a medium, rejects a purely visual aesthetic, and blurs lines of form and content. The Evening of Electras consists of the adaptation of the classical Greek tragedy, Electra by Sophocles, Euripides, and Aeschylus, that takes inspiration from video games, specifically interactive games or role-playing games. Like these games, the audience gets the power to shape the narrative through scripted choices presented on stage. The main focus of the process is to show that emotional immersion, the ability to empathize with the characters and the narrative, is at the same level of immersion as spatial immersion, the immersision containing to a space or location. The Nature Of Relationships In Combat And Their Impact On Ptsd Outcomes, Matthew Came

The aim of this study was to interrogate the widely reported link between close relationships and the development of PTSD and to contribute to the overarching discussion of PTSD among combat veterans. Participation was limited strictly to combat veterans. Participants were recruited through private combat veteran groups on social media, vetted combat veteran support groups in the Sarasota FL. area, and through the Sarasota VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars) Post 3233, (n=65). Participants completed the Modified ECR, a 20 question survey based on the Experiences in Close relationship scale and answered questions regarding PTSD diagnosis and symptoms. From Overtown To Rosemary: Exploring Race And Space Through Oral Histories Of Sarasota’S First African American District, William Cooney

This thesis is concerned with the development of the Rosemary District in Sarasota, also known as Historic Overtown. As a way of investigating the history of Overtown, namely the Black migration to Newtown and the ensuing gentrification, I conducted nine oral histories with local social activists who have ties to the neighborhood. I also analyzed historic and contemporary aerial photos to understand the spatial dimensions of Newtown’s segregation. Both forms of data are preceded by a theoretical framing and a background history of Sarasota to provide context. They are followed by a discussion of the intersection of race and space, …

Immersive Theatre is a relatively new movement that takes the conventions of Traditional Theatre and finds ways to break them. This thesis explores the conventions of Immersive Theatre and the different subcategories that make up this theatrical movement. It uses different pieces found in the genres to create these subcategories as well as the conventions. It also explores the uses of space, audience. and engagement that make this style of live performance unique. Living With/In Disaster: Interpreting Heritage Through Performance In The Time Of Climate Change, Rachel Lyn Ceciro

This thesis examines the function of an ecological theater as a method of heritage interpretation through research and practice. My first chapter explores definitions of memory, heritage, and interpretation, detailing what a successful interpretive project looks like. I then go on to define what constitutes a production of ecotheater by detailing its goals of coalescing the divide of nature and culture, encouraging performances to center the more-than-human world rather than focusing on exclusively human stories. The chapter concludes with examining the 2016-17 production of Bear by the Unreliable Bestiary, exhibiting how a piece of ecotheater uses interpretive tools to achieve …

"Let's Make 'Em Squeal" And "Mitch, That's Not How You Hold A Gun": Allison Lundergrun Grimes And Joni Ernst's Faux Feminine Performance In 2014 Senate Ads, J. Scott Smith

Iowa Journal of Communication

This analysis examines gendered scripts used by U.S. Senate candidates Joni Ernst and Alison Lundergan Grimes in their political ads during the 2014 midterm election. Adapting Gibson and Heyse's (2010) approach to examining gendered scripts, this article found that both Ernst and Grimes relied on masculine scripts that undermined the feminine appeals they used and reinforced hegemonic ideology. While employing a similar mix of gendered scripts that included emasculating their opponents, the candidates differed in their electoral success. Ernst's political ads remained ideologically consistent with the Republican Party's ideals and she won her race by nine points. In contrast, Grimes's …

If Nonhuman Animals Can Suicide, Why Don’T They?, C. A. Soper, Todd K. Shackelford

Animal Sentience

An evolutionary analysis suggests that selection is unlikely to have tolerated the capacity for intentional self-killing in nonhuman animals. The potential to escape pain by suicide would have presented a recurrent and severe adaptive problem for an animal with a reproductive future to protect. If the potential for suicide arose in the evolutionary past, anti-suicide mechanisms may have co-evolved, as we believe they have in adult humans. Peña-Guzmán’s (2017) argument that some nonhuman animals can suicide is incomplete without an account of the defences that result in the vast majority opting not to.

During the late-nineteenth century, descriptions of the fashions worn by the summer residents of Newport, RI appeared in magazines and newspapers all around the world. Though contemporary interpretation romanticizes the idea that Newport’s style leaders wore their ensembles once before discarding them, letters and diaries from the Newport Historical Society and the Preservation Society of Newport County detail how clothing was reused and remade across all levels of society during the American Gilded Age. While Newport’s belles sold and traded gowns with friends, remodeled afternoon ensembles into evening gowns, and re-cut and re-dyed their clothing to fit the latest styles, …

The Lévite Dress: Untangling The Cultural Influences Of Eighteenth-Century French Fashion, Kendra Van Cleave

Textile Society of America: Symposium Proceedings

During the final decades of the eighteenth century, France saw a massive vogue for women’s clothing styles that, while adhering to the fundamental norms of French dress, were directly influenced by Ottoman clothing. One of the most popular of these was the levite, a dress that was introduced in the late 1770s and continued in popularity through the late 1780s. Inspired by costumes worn in a staging of Racine’s play “Athalie,” which is set in the ancient Biblical era, the levite initially mimicked the lines of Middle Eastern caftans.
