This essay accompanies the researcher’s Master of Fine Arts thesis concert, Sensaciones y emociones (performed on September 5 and 6, 2017). It describes how he employed his training as a flamenco dancer to choreographically model three non-expressive interactions with three discrete feelings in the performances of this concert. The essay outlines the ways in which the researcher used his art practice to imagine alternative strategies for relating to emotions and sensations, as phenomena that might put a body in motion, but that do not always or necessarily travel from inside of a feeling subject, outward, in an act commonly called …

In this essay, I review my development as a playwright in the MFA Dramatic Writing program and examine the shifting, overlapping goals of playwright-as-educator and playwright-as-entertainer. In Part One, I position my academic exploration of trauma in relation to ethics in journalism, embodied knowledge, and intersectional feminism and outline my creative experiments in staging trauma through the process of witnessing, retelling, and abstraction. In an era increasingly defined by socioeconomic and educational inequalities, resurgence of white supremacy, and “fake news”, we as information workers must challenge how we have understood our roles in the library. 17th Annual Celebration of Undergraduate Research and Creative Performance (2018)

The stage manager is a role that requires organizational skills, composure, and confidence to help a production run smoothly. In February of 2018, Hope College put The Glass Menagerie, by Tennessee Williams, on their stage. I accepted the role of stage manager and began my work immediately. My job was to organize and lead production meetings, run rehearsals, gather and share information, and keep everyone involved in the process updated and informed. This project will show stage management documentation of The Glass Menagerie from the beginning of the production to the end.

Iago As Moral Other In Jonathan Munby's Production Of Othello (2016), Emma Magbanua

Honors Theses

Jonathan Munby produced a contemporary adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello at the Chicago Shakespeare Theatre in Spring of 2016. While continuing to utilize Shakespeare's language, Munby modernized Othello through the use of contemporary military costumes, props, accents, music, and dance. Munby did not limit his adaptation to solely visual and auditory aspects of Othello, but also took the liberty of contemporizing the principle of "otherness" in the play. This research explores the identification of Munby's character as Iago as "Moral Other," whose actions lead to the fall of his wife, Emilia, a fellow officer, Roderigo, Desdemona, and the protagonist, Othello.

This poster will focus on ongoing research into the life of Elizabeth Russell, an early modern English gentlewoman. Currently, this research is funded by an URCO grant through the Office of Research and Graduate Studies. Elizabeth Cooke Hoby Russell lived during the 16th and 17th centuries and played a unique role in her community. She was politically and religiously active, she owned several properties in her own right, and she had several books published, all activities which were rare for women of the time. Celebration of Research

The increased diversity of beliefs surrounding the definition of gender identity and gender roles has enhanced the need for research on historical societies' beliefs and practices. By examining the private and professional theatre of Elizabethan England through contemporary scholarship, primary sources, and plays of the time, I found a contrast between companies comprised entirely of boys and those comprised of adult men. Boy players were able to play female and male characters across a wide age range. My analysis shows that the Elizabethan society's acceptance of this theatrical convention depended upon the widespread view of adolescents as ambiguous in age …

“M”is the most common sound in the word for “mother” in languages all over the world. In this stunning tribute to motherhood, contemporary dance, set to baroque music, probes its joys and sorrows. While pregnant with her third child, emerging Israeli choreographer Inbal Oshman found inspiration in Pergolesi’s version of Stabat Mater, the 13th-century hymn about Mary’s vigil at the foot of the cross. Oshman’s dance explores the vulnerability and tenderness required of mothers, and the strength and ferocity that come with the territory.
