The Anchor, Volume 132.10: November 14, 2018, Hope College

The Anchor: 2018

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Surveillance, Anticipation And Firefighting In Hospital: Perspectives Of Patient Safety From A New Zealand Case Study, J Wailing, B Robinson, Ma Coombs

School of Nursing and Midwifery

Aim This study explored how doctors, nurses and managers working in a New Zealand tertiary hospital understand patient safety. Background Despite health care systems implementing proven safety strategies from high reliability organisations, such as aviation and nuclear power, these have not been uniformly adopted by health care professionals with concerns raised about clinician engagement. Design Instrumental, embedded case study design using qualitative methods. Methods The study used purposeful sampling, and data was collected using focus groups and semi-structured interviews with doctors (n = 31); registered nurses (n = 19); and senior organisational managers (n = 3) in a New Zealand …

Nurturing Love And Respect In Marriage, Megan Northrup, Stephen F. Duncan Nov 2018

Nurturing Love And Respect In Marriage, Megan Northrup, Stephen F. Duncan

Forever Families

The Family: A Proclamation to the World reminds us that we have an obligation to love and serve our marriage partner. To love them effectively, we have to know and understand their inner world—their likes, dislikes, thoughts, and feelings. Taking the time to do this and then acting on what we learn is a powerful way to nurture love and respect in our marriage. Researcher John Gottman1 calls this process enhancing our "love maps."

The Expression Of Gratitude As A Contributor To Marital Strength, Kandace R. Palmer Nov 2018

The Expression Of Gratitude As A Contributor To Marital Strength, Kandace R. Palmer

Intuition: The BYU Undergraduate Journal of Psychology

Abstract

Gratitude is an important positive emotion for personal and social growth. Because of innate human needs, gratitude strengthens and builds interpersonal connections (Carnegie, 1936/1981; Johnson, 2008; Lambert & Fincham, 2011). In light of more recent research on the expression of gratitude in dyadic relationships, gratitude is considered to be an essential emotion for communicating “responsiveness” and for marriage survival (Algoe, Fredrickson, & Gable, 2013; Algoe, Kurtz, & Hilaire, 2016; Algoe & Zhaoyang, 2016). When spouses express appreciation, sincerity is necessary for gratitude to strengthen a marriage (Gordon, Arnette, & Smith, 2011; Leong, 2012). Furthermore, insincere gratitude, or a belief …

Grandma Pullan's Orange Rolls, Glen Wright Nov 2018

Grandma Pullan's Orange Rolls, Glen Wright

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

My Grandma Pullan has made these rolls for every Thanksgiving dinner as long as I can remember, and long before that. She is nearly 80 now and has been making the rolls her whole life, so over 60 years now. She got the recipe from her mother, my Great Grandma Foster, who probably got it from her mother, my Great great Grandma Yates. I don't know how many generations back it goes, but it will probably keep going for generations to come. Our family loves orange rolls too much to give them up.

The recipe is complicated and finicky. It …
