Greetings From..., Casey Mae Schachner Jan 2019

Greetings From..., Casey Mae Schachner

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Greetings from... is a reflection of my roots in the tropical vacationland of Florida, a place for which I feel both nostalgic and conflicted. Growing up in southern tourist destinations, I was confronted daily with the extreme contrasts of living in paradise. In my artwork, I am translating the cacophony of Florida through the lens of materiality. By re-configuring commodified objects of the tourism industry, the sculptural works in this show exhibit my consideration for the paradoxical relationships that exist between materials and place. Much like the avant-garde Surrealist object, or the assemblage of found materials in provocative combinations that …

The Case For (And Against) Surrogate Taxation, Julie Roin Jan 2019

The Case For (And Against) Surrogate Taxation, Julie Roin

Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers

The 2017 Tax Cut and Jobs Act significantly revised long-standing rules regarding the tax treatment of many employer provided in-kind benefits. Instead of including the value of these benefits in the recipients’ taxable income, for the most part the new rules disallow employers a deduction for the cost of providing the affected benefits. This article argues that the two components of this legislative scheme – relying on cost of provision as the measure of taxable income and on imposing the nominal tax obligation on providers rather than recipients – are distinct policy decisions. It argues that the better approach would …

Diy Art And Community Activism, Preston Allen Jan 2019

Diy Art And Community Activism, Preston Allen

Cal Poly Humboldt theses and projects

This study explores the collaborative process of members of DIY art collectives in the Pacific Northwest as understood through a collective action lens focused on the cooperative links and motivations of the art collectives. Participant observation and in-depth interviews were used to gather data showing the process of establishing and maintaining membership in a DIY art collective, and the values that motivate the collective’s continuation. Drawing on Howard Becker’s art world framework as well as literature on social movements and art activism, I show how the DIY art world of this study is fluid, open, and driven by values of …

Politics As (Un)Usual., Celina Kreidy Jan 2019

Politics As (Un)Usual., Celina Kreidy

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The first ten pages are comprised of a psychological analysis that explores language and rhetoric of candidates during campaigns, sexism in campaigns, voter suppression and the influence social media in campaigns based on the events in this play. The premise of the play is as follows: Last year’s Student Government at Lakeside University was riddled with scandal and favoritism. Students from the university’s press prepare to chronicle the student government election that starts out as “politics as usual,” with the typical candidates (political science and law students) announcing their candidacy. But when one of student government’s very own announces his …

A Right To Bail: Recovering Constitutional Protections In The Excessive Bail Clause, Nicolas Cathcart Jan 2019

A Right To Bail: Recovering Constitutional Protections In The Excessive Bail Clause, Nicolas Cathcart

Harriet L Wilkes Honors College Theses 2010 - 2019

The 8th Amendment forbids excessive bail, but this essential Constitutional protection has been undermined. The Supreme Court held in U.S. v. Salerno that the Constitution does not entitle defendants to bail and allowed federal courts to deny bail if they deem the defendant a threat to the community. However, both history and the current problems in the bail system demonstrate the Court erred in its ruling. Contrary to Salerno, the 8th Amendment was intended to provide a right to bail for all defendants who posed no threat to the judicial process. In order to protect essential rights of due process …

Right To Privacy, A Complicated Concept To Review, Ali Alibeigi, Abu Bakar Munir, Md Ershadul Karim

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The Concept and definition of the privacy has been changed during the time affecting by different factors. At the same time, the boundaries of privacy may differ from one place to another affecting by the culture, religion, etc. Nonetheless, there is not a unique general accepted definition for the privacy. Privacy has been considered from different disciplines like sociology, psychology, law and philosophy. It is a multidisciplinary domain, having an easy concept but difficult to define. However, by reviewing all different viewpoints, it can be concluded that privacy is an individual tendency, wish and natural need to be away from …

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

ABSTRACT

This paper gives national and international perspectives of librarianship and examined the repositioning of libraries in Nigeria’s educational system to make them competitive in line with global best practices. Library leadership, training and curriculum content for professionalism and funding were looked at as devices for competitiveness vis-à-vis international university standards. Recommendations were made for leadership training and review of library school curriculums to reflect new trends in librarianship as well as promotion of reading culture, among others, for global competitiveness.

The Performance Of Racialized Bodies And Brecht’S Operatic Anthropology, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D. Jan 2019

The Performance Of Racialized Bodies And Brecht’S Operatic Anthropology, Kevin S. Amidon Ph.D.

Modern Languages Faculty Publications

Taxonomic tropes and themes, particularly gender and class, but also race, function together in Brecht’s plays to create overdetermined characterizations. Parallel to these characterizations, he developed a multilayered theory of performance that emphasizes how those who enact text should approach the representation of diverse human types and groups. His encounter with Chinese acting established foundational elements in this theory. In parallel to his theoretical thinking about performance and race in the mid-1930s, Brecht was developing his stance toward operatic representation. While these two conceptual spheres, race and opera, might appear far apart in their content, they parallel each other closely …

The Ghost Story Of The Great War: Spiritualism, Psychical Research And The British War Experience, 1914-1939., Kyle Falcon Jan 2019

The Ghost Story Of The Great War: Spiritualism, Psychical Research And The British War Experience, 1914-1939., Kyle Falcon

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This dissertation examines the role of the Great War in shaping British spiritualism and psychical between 1914 and 1939. Spiritualism can be defined as the belief in the survival of the human personality and the possibility of communication with the dead, particularly through the séance. Psychical research represented a more scientifically oriented and research focused approach to the supernatural. These movements originated in the nineteenth century as traditional religious authority waned. Meanwhile, scientists had harnessed unseen forces to make wireless communications possible, while others probed the mysterious world of the unconscious mind through trance. Spiritualism and psychical research flourished in …

The Zen/Budo Of The Arts: Discovering Transpersonal Influences And Insights Into Cultural Integration Through The Artistry Of The Kata In Traditional Karate, James Frederic Bonomo Jan 2019

The Zen/Budo Of The Arts: Discovering Transpersonal Influences And Insights Into Cultural Integration Through The Artistry Of The Kata In Traditional Karate, James Frederic Bonomo

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Many of Japan’s aesthetic, philosophical and cultural institutions were originated in China and India. This nexus created the basis for national unification by and through the use of the kata (trnsl: form or shape). Equally important is the component that integrates artistry into the kata, and eventually, into the kata of Shotokan karate. This particular occurrence compliments the historically important idea known as kokoro (mind-body-spirit), a Zen term but often synonymous with artistry and the artistic mindset. Kokoro can be seen as the product of cumulative intersections in philosophical discourse, framing Japanese beliefs in all things that led to a …

Animate Things And Their Empowered Women In Kate Chopin’S “A Pair Of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” And “Azelie”, Susan Moldow Jan 2019

Animate Things And Their Empowered Women In Kate Chopin’S “A Pair Of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” And “Azelie”, Susan Moldow

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Kate Chopin’s stories including “A Pair of Silk Stockings,” “A Very Fine Fiddle” and “Azelie” are rich in subject-object relationships. Close text analysis helps explicate the power of these objects or things. A thing is animate and an object is not. The stockings, fiddle, and store objects are part of a transaction between things and people; what is an object to one character is a thing to another. Exploration of Victorian women and department stores illuminates how stockings overpower Mrs. Sommers. Research on share tenant life, violins’ value, and Louisiana mixed ancestry reveals how the fiddle enables Fifine and Cleophas …

Caudill Under El Caudillo: Southern Baptists, Cuba, And The Origins Of Conservatism, 1959-1979, Colton Babbitt Jan 2019

Caudill Under El Caudillo: Southern Baptists, Cuba, And The Origins Of Conservatism, 1959-1979, Colton Babbitt

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In 1965, the Cuban government arrested two Southern Baptist missionaries and several Cuban Baptists and charged them with multiple crimes, including espionage. Almost immediately, a backlash to the arrests swept across Baptists in the United States. During the four years between the missionaries’ imprisonment and their release, W.A. Criswell, conservative pastor of the massive First Baptist Church of Dallas, incorporated the missionaries’ testimonies into his own agenda. This thesis examines Herbert Caudill’s experiences as a part of rising conservatism in the Southern Baptist Convention in the late nineteen sixties and explains the role of anti-communism and the Cold War as …

Carbon Mountains And Silicon Valleys: Reality Imagined In The Age Of Technological Reproducibility, Raven Doyle Jan 2019

Carbon Mountains And Silicon Valleys: Reality Imagined In The Age Of Technological Reproducibility, Raven Doyle

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Realism, defined by its most influential theorist André Bazin has been, and continues to be, a dominant and defining cinematic discourse. However, the lack of regard for animation is in need of retrospection. No genre of film adheres more to the original principles of cinema’s intention than animation, yet it is discredited because of its derivative form. The purpose of this paper is to propose a redefinition of the impression of reality in cinema to create inclusion and space for animation and new, emerging technologies. This reality, redefined, is divided into two categories: the carbon and the constructed. Analyzed through …

Community Colleges’ Transition To Offering Baccalaureate Degrees: A Case Study Of The Impact On Human Resources, David George Tomanio Jan 2019

Community Colleges’ Transition To Offering Baccalaureate Degrees: A Case Study Of The Impact On Human Resources, David George Tomanio

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The purpose of the multi-site case study was to gain an understanding of the impact on human resources that public community colleges in the State of Florida experience when the institutions expanded their degree offerings to include Community College Baccalaureate degrees. The researcher was able to identify that there were changes in human resources in the areas of compensation plans, job descriptions, and credentialing of faculty members. The researcher determined the other impacts on human resources, such as changes to the organizational structure, and to the culture of the organization, in a positive way. Qualitative research methods were used that …

Decoding Dexter: An Analysis Of America’S Favorite Serial Killer, Erin Burns-Davies Jan 2019

Decoding Dexter: An Analysis Of America’S Favorite Serial Killer, Erin Burns-Davies

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

In an intersectional feminist analysis of Dexter in both the novels by Jeff Lindsay as well as the Showtime television series, this dissertation will explore the challenging but compelling nature of the serial killer as a pop culture icon, and address themes of gender and sexuality as well as class, ethnicity and regions as they are portrayed in the series. Dexter Morgan, on the Showtime series and in the novels, both exposes popular culture’s problematic identification with the serial killer and solidifies it by being a socially palatable anti-hero.

Mercury Express, Cangshu Gran Jan 2019

Mercury Express, Cangshu Gran

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

My thesis exhibition “Mercury Express” is the culmination of my creative research and the paintings that I have created over the past three years. This body of work is comprised of fourteen oil glaze paintings on canvas, ranging in size from 16x 16 inches to 36 x 48 inches. These paintings demonstrate, through subjective color and the application of misty layers of luminous paint, my residence on the edge of moving to the future and looking to the past. Through imagination my paintings express a longing for connections and offer glimpses of happiness tinted with a pervasive overcast of melancholy. …

Crashworthy Code, Bryan H. Choi Jan 2019

Crashworthy Code, Bryan H. Choi

Publications

Code crashes. Yet for decades, software failures have escaped scrutiny for tort liability. Those halcyon days are numbered: self-driving cars, delivery drones, networked medical devices, and other cyber-physical systems have rekindled interest in understanding how tort law will apply when software errors lead to loss of life or limb.

Even after all this time, however, no consensus has emerged. Many feel strongly that victims should not bear financial responsibility for decisions that are entirely automated, while others fear that cyber-physical manufacturers must be shielded from crushing legal costs if we want such companies to exist at all. Some insist the …

Chance Wanderer And Other Tales Of Hunger, Camille Goodison Jan 2019

Chance Wanderer And Other Tales Of Hunger, Camille Goodison

Publications and Research

Goodison's collection explores the lives of a range of people who find themselves at a pivotal point in life, often brought there through unpredictable, unseen forces. The characters are seemingly ordinary individuals -- teachers, shoemakers, shop clerks -- who at some point reveal themselves to be loners, dissidents, artists, seekers and sages; essentially, representatives of traditions under test. The many material fetishisms of modern life never satisfy or replace our individual desires, and so these characters attempt to offer new perspectives, new ways to look at the world that’s already around them. While the stories are told realistically, they sometimes …

Hemen Mazumdar: The Last Romantic, Caterina Corni, Nirmalya Kumar

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Hemendranath Mazumdar, popularly referred to as Hemen Mazumdar, was born 1894 in Gachihata village of Mymensingh district, which is currently part of Bangladesh. Coming from a relatively wealthy landowning family, at the age of sixteen, Hemen dropped out of school and ran away to Calcutta to pursue his passion for painting. He enrolled at the Government College of Art in 1911, but left in 1912 for another institution, Jubilee Art Academy. By 1915, he left Jubilee Art Academy to start earning his living through portrait painting. Abanindranath Tagore’s coterie had banished any artist following the western academic approach. In response, …

Evaluating Theory Of Structured Experience Propositions: Effects Of Service Quality And Experience Industry Techniques On Quality Of Immediate Leisure Experiences, Gary D. Ellis, Andrew Lacanienta, Patti A. Freeman, Brian J. Hill Jan 2019

Evaluating Theory Of Structured Experience Propositions: Effects Of Service Quality And Experience Industry Techniques On Quality Of Immediate Leisure Experiences, Gary D. Ellis, Andrew Lacanienta, Patti A. Freeman, Brian J. Hill

Faculty Publications

We tested two propositions of the Theory of Structured Experience: first, strategies used to structure experiences in the leisure industries elevate experience quality only when a threshold of service performance is met or exceeded; and second, positive relations exist among indicators of experience quality. Two teams of higher education tourists visited 23 attractions on three Hawaiian Islands. Immediately after each visit, team one (n = 4) judged the attractions based on service quality and experience structuring performance. Members of team two (n = 14) also reported the quality of their individual experiences after each visit by measuring the prevalence of …

The Contribution Of Family Leisure To Family Functioning And Family Satisfaction Among Urban Russian Families, Mikale Williamson, Ramon Zabriskie, Jasmine Townsend, Peter Ward, Gilbert Fellingham, Irina Kuznetsova

Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to examine how both family leisure involvement and family leisure satisfaction contributed to the explanation of variance in family functioning and satisfaction with family life among urban Russian families (n = 597). As an initial examination of family leisure functioning in the Russian culture, mixed model analysis accounted for family-level and individual level variance, and indicated core family leisure satisfaction was the strongest predictor of all aspects of family functioning and satisfaction with family life, a pattern similar across other cultures. There were also positive relationships between balance family leisure and various aspects of …
