The Exploration Of A Nonbinary Gender Identity In The Visual Work Of Claude Cahun, Miranda Debrine Jan 2019

The Exploration Of A Nonbinary Gender Identity In The Visual Work Of Claude Cahun, Miranda Debrine

Honors Undergraduate Theses

Claude Cahun, born Lucy Renee Mathilde Schwob, was an author, playwright, surrealist photographer and anti-fascist activist who spent most of their lives in France and the Isle of Jersey from their birth in 1894 to their early death in 1954. Throughout their career they went by various aliases and pennames, settling on Claude Cahun in 1917, a gender-ambiguous name in French. While they considered themselves a writer before a photographer it is their photography that they are probably best known for today, becoming popular for their "modern" content that explores gender identity and its presentation. These self-portraits, along with their …

Displays Of Medici Wealth And Authority: The Acts Of The Apostles And Valois Fêtes Tapestry Cycles, Madison L. Clyburn Jan 2019

Displays Of Medici Wealth And Authority: The Acts Of The Apostles And Valois Fêtes Tapestry Cycles, Madison L. Clyburn

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The objective of my research is to explore Medici extravagance, power, and wealth through the multifaceted artistic form of tapestries vis-à-vis two particular tapestry cycles; the Acts of the Apostles and the Valois Fêtes. The cycles were commissioned by Pope Leo X (1475-1521), the first Medici pope, and Catherine de' Medici (1519-1589), queen, queen regent, and queen mother of France. The motivation for such a project lies in analyzing what is traditionally considered as two independent tapestry cycles by revealing their social, religious, political, and artistic significance through the powerful dynastic influence of the Medici. As Leo and Catherine were …

The Wow Factor: Lesbian Representation And Impact In Late-20th Century Theatre, Brenna L. Maginness Jan 2019

The Wow Factor: Lesbian Representation And Impact In Late-20th Century Theatre, Brenna L. Maginness

Honors Undergraduate Theses

The intent of this thesis is to investigate the influence of 1980's and 1990's lesbian playwrights on modern queer representation in theatre. By analyzing the successful works of troupes and artists born out of the Women's One World (WOW) Café, it became apparent that the greatest changes in lesbian portrayal on stage came from queer and feminist authorship. Additionally, WOW Café became the common denominator in the success of many lesbian playwrights due to the freedom it gave its writers and performers. As an independent theatre, WOW allowed its members to experiment with few rules, and offered a stage to …

Phillis Wheatley And Carolina Maria De Jesus: Unexpected Voices Of Revolutionary Times, Tami L. Toms Jan 2019

Phillis Wheatley And Carolina Maria De Jesus: Unexpected Voices Of Revolutionary Times, Tami L. Toms

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The works of Phillis Wheatley and Carolina Maria de Jesus are compared using the concept of jeitinho, a Portuguese word for a little way The creative and crafty method of jeitinho is identified in both writers’ work and gives a lens to see a different level of engagement in criticism. Both writers have been criticized for their lack of social commentary, but the introduction of jeitinho shows their subtle, yet clear assessment of their society. By re-evaluating the contributions made by each author, it is possible to reclaim their relevance as authors.

Johnny Appleseed: Citizenship Transmission Laws And A White Heteropatriarchal Property Right In Philandering, Sexual Exploitation, And Rape (The Whp) Or Johnny And The Whp, Blanche Cook

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

Title 8, United States Code, Section 1409-one of this country's

citizenship transmission laws-creates a white heteropatriarchal property right

in philandering, sexual exploitation, and rape (the "WHP"). Section 1409

governs the transmission of citizenship from United States citizens to their

children, where the child is born abroad, outside of marriage, and one parent is a

citizen and the other is not. Section 1409, however, draws a distinct gender

distinction between women and men: An unwed female American citizen who

births a child outside the United States, fathered by a foreign man, automatically

transmits citizenship to her child. An unwed male American …

Re-Examining The Education System: Policy Recommendations For Florida Education Reform, K-12, Ariel Powell Jan 2019

Re-Examining The Education System: Policy Recommendations For Florida Education Reform, K-12, Ariel Powell

Theses & ETDs

Education reform is one of many nonpartisan policies that many consider important. However, how the reform looks differs. The current education system is made up of unequal and discriminatory policies that have been pieced together over the years. To combat the sometimes blatant inequities within the system, there has to be an overhaul of not just the education system. The policy recommendations offered throughout the paper includes everything from education reform to criminal justice reform and builds its case off of the fact that no reform should be created in a vacuum especially, especially education policies. Education reform does not …

“Sometimes It’S Just Beyond Telling”: The Cultural Politics Of Unspeakable Truths In The Vietnam Era, Cassandra Manz Jan 2019

“Sometimes It’S Just Beyond Telling”: The Cultural Politics Of Unspeakable Truths In The Vietnam Era, Cassandra Manz

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines three mediums—national magazines, Hollywood films, and war correspondent memoirs—to explore the creation of American memory and narrative of the Vietnam War. Throughout this thesis, I explore the different ways each medium created and maintained a different type of narrative and memory, and the different ways Americans approached each medium. Although these national magazine covers, films, and memoirs were produced during and after the war, and contained varying levels of hard news and historical accounts, each medium maintained a similar narrative of the war, and created a specific type of memory for the American people. Throughout their descriptions …

“The Air Seems To Infatuate The Ear”: Confederate Anthems, Union Battle Cries, And Their Respective Contrafacta, Melia Wong Jan 2019

“The Air Seems To Infatuate The Ear”: Confederate Anthems, Union Battle Cries, And Their Respective Contrafacta, Melia Wong

2019 Claremont Colleges Library Undergraduate Research Award

During the Civil War, musical fluidity led to an outpouring of songs written about the

conflict. With every popular song came at least one set of alternate lyrics known as

contrafacta. In this thesis, I analyze Northern anthem “The Battle Cry of Freedom,”

and Southern anthems “The Bonnie Blue Flag” and “Dixie” and their contrafacta.

Through the lens of contrafacta, I analyze how the North and the South understood

the terms “liberty” and “freedom.”

Say "Oui" To "We": A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pronouns And Articles In French And English, Colleen Wilkes Jan 2019

Say "Oui" To "We": A Longitudinal Analysis Of Pronouns And Articles In French And English, Colleen Wilkes

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Modern English only uses gender in personal, reflexive, and possessive third person singular pronouns. Modern English also does not use gendered articles, which extends to not assigning an arbitrary gender to inanimate objects. This study examines how recent this aspect of grammar is, and to what degree did cultural interaction with the French throughout history influence the use of gendered pronouns. Two written texts in British English (one in Old English, one in Modern English) and one written text in French are analyzed for elements of grammatical gender embedded within articles, pronouns, and possessive adjectives. The geopolitical influences on incorporating …

Choice Of Law And The Right Of Publicity: Rethinking The Domicile Rule, Mary Lafrance Jan 2019

Choice Of Law And The Right Of Publicity: Rethinking The Domicile Rule, Mary Lafrance

Scholarly Works

Determining the best choice of law principle for right of publicity claims, and persuading courts to adopt this principle, will enhance predictability for potential plaintiffs and defendants in the foreseeable future. To begin this process, this article by Professor Mary LaFrance takes a critical look at the widespread practice of applying the law of the celebrity's domicile to determine the existence of an enforceable right of publicity.

This article suggests that there are strong policy arguments against the domicile rule, and that courts adhering to the rule are confusing disputes over property ownership with disputes over liability for tortious injury …

Online Dispute Resolution For Smart Contracts, Amy J. Schmitz, Colin Rule Jan 2019

Online Dispute Resolution For Smart Contracts, Amy J. Schmitz, Colin Rule

Faculty Publications

Smart contracts built in the blockchain are quietly revolutionizing traditional transactions despite their questionable status under current law. At the same time, disputes regarding smart contracts are inevitable, and par-ties will need means for dealing with smart contract issues. This Article tackles this challenge, and proposes that parties turn to online dispute resolution (“ODR”) to efficiently and fairly resolve smart contract disputes. Furthermore, the Article acknowledges the benefits and challenges of current blockchain ODR start-ups, and proposes specific ideas for how designers could address those challenges and incorporate ODR to provide just resolutions that will not stymie efficiencies of smart …

Mississippi In Technicolor: Portraits Of Strength, Devna Bose Jan 2019

Mississippi In Technicolor: Portraits Of Strength, Devna Bose

Honors Theses

This thesis is a collection of my articles that have been published over four years at The Daily Mississippian, the university’s student newspaper. In these articles, I explore the many facets of the queer community in Oxford and Mississippi. These stories allow a glimpse into the modern queer community of Mississippi and examine the issues that often affect them. It is not an academic paper — it is merely an examination of the people and places that contribute to the Mississippi LGBTQ+ community. It includes stories about social issues, intersectionality, and legislature in relation to the queer population of this …
