“Trespassers Will Be Persecuted”: Oil And Property Law In Ben Okri’S “What The Tapster Saw”, Rose Casey

A movement appears to be underway in certain areas of property jurisprudence to recalibrate property law for more equitable and life-sustaining ends. For many legal theorists working from a Global South, indigenous, or minority perspective, international legal frameworks seem increasingly receptive to reformulating laws regulating property ownership to better protect frequently dispossessed communities and sustain ecological, animal, and human life. Perhaps the most promising such example of a potentially substantial change to prevailing formulations of property ownership is found in the area of indigenous cultural and intellectual property rights. Since 2007, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has been working …

"Let Bartlet Be Bartlet:" The Presidential Politics Of Aaron Sorkin's The West Wing, Marjory Madeline Zuk
Honors Theses
From 1999-2006, Aaron Sorkin’s television show The West Wing entertained audiences with a weekly backstage pass to life in the White House. While the show featured plotlines regarding the characters’ personal lives, it also centered the policy decisions of President Bartlet and his staffers, and it informed audiences about political issues and tools. With background research, I confirmed that the style of the show was a valuable educational tool, as it used both episodic and thematic framing devices when discussing different political issues. My understanding of its ability to influence audiences’ understandings of political issues lead my interest in understanding …

Therapeutic Expression, Jennifer Kinsley
Therapeutic Expression, Jennifer Kinsley
Emory Law Journal
This Article explores the relationship between free speech and harm. Examining the historical First Amendment justifications, it argues that harm is a relevant criterion in determining the scope of speech protection. But this Article also resists the notion that speech should be restricted solely based upon resultant damage, demonstrating instead that the freedom to speak freely actually forestalls rather than causes individual and societal harm. Drawing upon psychological and sociological theories related to the treatment of sex offenders, the Article posits that the ability to engage in free expression is critical to preventing physical and emotional damage to others. Individuals …

Deaf Children, Humor And Education Policy, Donna Jo Napoli, R. L. Sutton-Spence
Linguistics Faculty Works
Deaf children need true inclusion to learn, entailing consistent, pervasive use of visual-learning techniques. This is achieved via bilingual education policies that enforce deaf children’s rights to use sign language, permitting teachers to engage in deaf pedagogy using sign language. Educational policies advocating inclusion via an interpreter in the mainstreamed classroom create the “illusion of inclusion” (Glickman 2003). We argue that, in either case, humor can aid inclusion. Understanding humor is a developmental ability, related to cognitive, social, linguistic, and metalinguistic competence. Additionally, learning how humor is understood and expressed contributes to language mastery. However, we find little discussion of …

Rate Of Surface Contamination In The Operating Suite During Revision Total Joint Arthroplasty, Matthew J. Dietz, Phillip A. Bostian, Emily P. Ernest, Adam E. Klein, P. Rocco Lasala, Benjamin M. Frye, Brock A. Lindsey
Faculty & Staff Scholarship
Background
This study estimated operating room surface contamination rates during aseptic vs septic total joint arthroplasty and evaluated the similarity between clinically infecting organisms and those isolated from contaminated surfaces.
Methods
Patients undergoing total hip and knee revision arthroplasties were identified, and surface and tissue samples were collected. Cases were classified aseptic or septic based on Musculoskeletal Infection Society criteria for prosthetic joint infection. Positive surface cultures were compared with intraoperative tissue cultures. Positive cultures were speciated and tested for antimicrobial sensitivity.
Results
Samples were collected from 31 aseptic and 18 septic cases. Patients had similar demographics and time to …
The Effect Of Saline Flush After Rocuronium Bolus On The Proportion Of Patients With Excellent Intubating Conditions In Adult Patients Undergoing Elective Surgery At Akuh-N, Ian Odari
Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology
Background: In emergency surgeries requiring endotracheal intubation, the time to effect of neuromuscular blocking drugs is a crucial time in which patients are predisposed to hypoxia and aspiration into the lungs. Various strategies have been undertaken to shorten this time, including the timing and the priming techniques, dose changes and use of a flush following the muscle relaxant. All these methods had positive results but some are associated with side effects. The effectiveness of a muscle relaxant can either be assessed using the train of four or intubating conditions on the Goldberg scale. In this study, the plan is to …
The Effect Of Premedication With Intravenous Lornoxicam On Propofol Injection Pain At Induction Of General Anaesthesia In Adults: A Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial, Dennis Omari Onyancha
The Effect Of Premedication With Intravenous Lornoxicam On Propofol Injection Pain At Induction Of General Anaesthesia In Adults: A Randomised Placebo-Controlled Trial, Dennis Omari Onyancha
Master of Medicine in Anaesthesiology
Background: Propofol is widely used for the induction and maintenance of general anaesthesia and offers many key attractive pharmacological qualities that make it suitable for these indications. However, pain on injection is one of its major drawbacks and can be very distressing to patients. There is a paucity of studies that have looked at the effect of lornoxicam on propofol injection pain either as a sole intervention or in combination with any other method. Primary objective: To determine whether premedication with intravenous lornoxicam had any effect on the intensity of propofol injection pain at induction of general anaesthesia in adult …

Oxytocin, Dopamine, And The Neuromodulation Of Mating Behavior In C. Elegans, Meghan Aileen Lockard
Oxytocin, Dopamine, And The Neuromodulation Of Mating Behavior In C. Elegans, Meghan Aileen Lockard
Student Theses and Dissertations
In the four modalities of analysis that Tinbergen describes: mechanistic, ontological, functional, and phylogenetic, I look at both the "how" and the "why" of oxytocin as a releaser of reproductive behavior. To do so, I take the wide view across 600 million years of metazoan evolution, focusing on the oxytocin-mediated mating behavior and physiology of the often-overlooked invertebrates. By looking to these simpler animals with both smaller, paired-down nervous systems and more diverse sets of mating strategies, I elucidate some of the basic and general principles of the oxytocin circuit (Chapter I). In Chapter II, I give a survey of …

Recalling how the free trader Benjamin Franklin pondered whether politics in America would be able to keep the republic he had helped to create, this essay looks at whether politics in the world will now be able to keep the World Trade Organization (WTO) in the face of the ongoing attacks by the US government. The essay makes several theoretical contributions: (1) to debunk the Trump Administration's arguments that there is a trade-off between American sovereignty and global governance by showing that this is a false dichotomy; (2) to identify the key design features of specialized international organizations that are …
Ecological Pleiotropy And Indirect Effects Alter The Potential For Evolutionary Rescue, John P. Delong, Jonathan Belmaker
Ecological Pleiotropy And Indirect Effects Alter The Potential For Evolutionary Rescue, John P. Delong, Jonathan Belmaker
School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
Invading predators can negatively affect naïve prey populations due to a lack of evolved defenses. Many species therefore may be at risk of extinction due to overexploitation by exotic predators. Yet the strong selective effect of predation might drive evolution of imperiled prey toward more resistant forms, potentially allowing the prey to persist. We evaluated the potential for evolutionary rescue in an imperiled prey using Gillespie eco‐evolutionary models (GEMs). We focused on a system parameterized for protists where changes in prey body size may influence intrinsic rate of population growth, space clearance rate (initial slope of the functional response), and …
