Reimagining Musical Improvisation Through Poetic Inspiration: A Creative Practice Investigation, Sean Foran
Reimagining Musical Improvisation Through Poetic Inspiration: A Creative Practice Investigation, Sean Foran
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This presentation explores creative practice as research through an innovative approach to musical improvisation that challenges traditional boundaries between music and literature. Working with experienced improvising musicians, this study investigates how poetic texts serve as catalysts for new creative processes and musical outcomes.
The methodology involved musicians responding improvisationally to recorded poetry narrations, followed by reflective discussion and re-improvisation, extending Hannan's concept of 'comprovisation' while maintaining complete musical agency. Significantly, the final creative works present only the improvised music, requiring audiences to read poems independently and construct their own text-music relationships.
This approach differs from established music-poetry collaborations by positioning …

The Realistic Tradition In Xiqu'S Stage Art: Insights From Kong Shangren's Peach Blossom Fan, Yaxin Chen
The Realistic Tradition In Xiqu'S Stage Art: Insights From Kong Shangren's Peach Blossom Fan, Yaxin Chen
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Much of the contemporary praise for Kong Shangren's Peach Blossom Fan focuses on the literary merits, but the stage art remains understudied. Kong Shangren's meticulous approach to stagecraft, particularly his adoption of a realistic style, forms an intentional and integral part of his artistic vision. His use of large, realistic props such as boats and carts has a longstanding tradition in xiqu, persisting through the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, unaffected by the advent of virtual performance styles. The realistic scenery, which reached its zenith at the end of the Ming dynasty, was extensively utilized in performances at the …

All Decisions
A landlord initiated a holdover proceeding, alleging occupants were licensees. The tenants moved to dismiss, contending they were tenants at sufferance or at will, thus requiring a 30-day notice of termination under RPL § 228, not the 10-day notice served. The landlord argued a prior Appellate Division decision, which found tenants were not rent-stabilized, estopped this claim. The court disagreed, holding that prior findings did not preclude the tenants from arguing non-licensee status. Recognizing the tenants had exclusive possession, the court determined they were improperly classified as licensees, rendering the 10-day notice insufficient and dismissing the petition without prejudice.

An Affinity For Alignment: Spontaneous Convergence Of Stance-Taking In Topical Conversations, Carmen Tu, Stacey Zoutis, Steven Brown
An Affinity For Alignment: Spontaneous Convergence Of Stance-Taking In Topical Conversations, Carmen Tu, Stacey Zoutis, Steven Brown
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Alignment in stance-taking is a foundational behavior in conversation, but few studies have quantified the degree to which conversationalists converge in their attitudes toward a topic. We attempted to quantify this convergence in terms of three parameters related to alignment: intensity (low to high), prevalence (percentage of time in alignment), and content (use of open-ended versus closed-ended statements). To examine the utility of these parameters, we compared the content of conversations between unacquainted dyads in either a free conversation condition or a topical condition in which the individuals were mismatched for their attitude toward the topic to maximize disalignment between …

Deslenguadas: A Photo Essay On The Performative Remembering Of The Impact Of 1940s Americanization Programs In Northern New Mexico, Yvonne M. Montoya, Fawn-Amber Montoya
International Journal on Responsibility
This photo essay captures the dance performance Deslenguadas by choreographer Yvonne Montoya. Deslenguadas, a dance inspired by a writing of the same name published in Gloria Anzaldúa’s Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza, is a series of three dances – one duet and two solos. The dances in the series explore the impact the forced loss of the Spanish language had on three generations of one nuevomexicano family from the 1940s to the present day. Through dance, movement, projected animation, and spoken word, the dances explore how each generation internalized racism and shame. At the same time, these generations …
