What Makes Art Images Travel So Well? Repetition, Variation, And The Global Life Of Images, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
What Makes Art Images Travel So Well? Repetition, Variation, And The Global Life Of Images, Béatrice Joyeux-Prunel
Artl@s Bulletin
What do we actually know about how images become global? This article takes stock of current approaches to studying their worldwide circulation. Drawing on findings from the Visual Contagions project—which maps 15 million illustrations across 18,000 periodicals in more than 50 countries—we now see that in the age of print, only a small fraction of images traveled widely, with art reproductions proving to be the most mobile. The central question, then, is whether this broader circulation of art images is linked to their formal power. When examined from multiple perspectives, the answer cannot be a simple yes. Visual circulation also …

Cognitive Warfare 2026: Nato’S Chief Scientist Report As Sentinel Call For Operational Readiness, James Giordano
Cognitive Warfare 2026: Nato’S Chief Scientist Report As Sentinel Call For Operational Readiness, James Giordano
Strategic Insights
This commentary examines emerging concepts in cognitive warfare, the use of information, perception shaping, and psychological influence as instruments of strategic competition. It also highlights insights from the 2026 NATO Chief Scientist Report. Dr. Giordano explains that cognitive effects extend traditional information operations by targeting how people think, make decisions, and act in complex environments. Drawing from NATO analysis, he argues that military organizations must integrate cognitive considerations into doctrine, planning, and training to enhance resilience and competitive advantage. Improved operational frameworks, interdisciplinary research, and ethical governance could help allied forces recognize, anticipate, and counter cognitive threats while preserving human …

Tapestries: Interwoven voices of local and global identities
In Amharic, Tizita is often referred to as a type of musical scale or ballad, but the word itself means so much more. Tizita is also a way of expressing a feeling of longing and memory for the homeland of Ethiopia. As a practitioner and now researcher of Ethiopian cultural dance, this proposed American Studies Senior Capstone project examines the significance of Ethiopian cultural dance within diasporic identities, how it can unite different people of different ethnic groups within the Ethiopian diaspora through mutual understanding, and how it connects diaspora to roots that we only know through the stories of …

Ulama And Vision 2030: Saudi Arabia Government's Strategies To Navigate A Successful Economic Reform, Nashiha Ulya, Hamdan Basyar
Ulama And Vision 2030: Saudi Arabia Government's Strategies To Navigate A Successful Economic Reform, Nashiha Ulya, Hamdan Basyar
Global: Jurnal Politik Internasional
Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 seeks to diversify its oil-dependent economy, but scepticism persists due to past reform failures, particularly in fiscal policy and labour markets. Ulama, as key figures in the Saudi "social contract," play a vital role in legitimising government policies, especially on social and religious matters. However, reforms promoting private sector growth and social liberalisation have raised concerns among conservative ulama over potential threats to Islamic values. To address this, the government under Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) employs a strategy of separating economic and religious narratives while using a "carrot and stick" approach to manage ulama opposition. This …

Fugitive Formalisms: Strategies Of Dissemblance And Dissent In The Work Of Queer-Identifying Artists, 1970–Present, Rowan Diaz-Toth
Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing case studies of works by Hélio Oiticica, Scott Burton, and Felix Gonzalez-Torres as points of departure, this thesis puts forth a speculative historical framework for reconsidering queer art practices up through the present day in opposition to regimes of visibility and transparency, exploring the subversive, fugitive potential of non-representational formalisms.

O Esqueleto De Um Romance, Lanna Leite
Theses and Dissertations
In O Esqueleto de um Romance: The Film (2025), a Berlin legal dispute between a mayor and evangelicals sparks filmmaker Lanna Leite’s reflection on faith, memory, and belief. Using archival, 16mm, and 8mm footage, the experimental film frames filmmaking as an ephemeral, performative practice resisting closure and conventional narrative finality.

Determinants Of The U.S. Experience Economy: A Macroeconomic, Demographic, And Technological Analysis, 1984–2023, Chloe Ross
CMC Senior Theses
Pine and Gilmore et al. 1999 examine American consumers’ preferences for experiences over durable goods. Since then, there has been a multitude of research on the psychology behind this shift in consumption preferences, and there has been an abundance of media coverage of the new “experience economy.” This thesis goes beyond psychology and examines the macroeconomic, demographic, and technological determinants of experiential spending in the United States from 1984 to 2023. I use annual data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Consumer Expenditure Survey (CES) and variables from the Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), Federal Reserve Economic Data (FRED), US …

Opera Houses In Aberdeen, Huron, And Watertown, Sd: 1880-1910s, Janet M. Meyer
Dissertations and Theses
In the 1880s, many newcomers arrived in Dakota Territory for a new start in Aberdeen, Huron, and Watertown. Their arrival coincided with the popularity of opera houses, so it was not surprising that entrepreneurs built opera houses in these new towns. The early opera houses included several benefits. They provided important gathering places for growing communities to hold meetings and social functions. The settler-colonial society included people from foreign countries and eastern states. Opera houses were also beneficial by providing familiar shows and concerts, perhaps some shows the residents previously enjoyed in their homes back east. Knowing that an entertainment …

The Uncanny And Uneasy: An Exploration Into Using Puppets To Share Dark Stories, Grace Auls
Graduate Studies Theses and Dissertations 2026
In this thesis, I will explore the role of puppetry and practical effects in evoking the uncanny and the uneasy as well as questioning the implications they have in dark theater and cinematic contexts. This paper will examine how puppetry and practical effects can contribute to potentially disturbing and dark imagery both on screen and in live theater. I will be focusing on looking at Jim Henson’s The Dark Crystal, as well as at different puppetry performances used in Voyage of the Little Mermaid (1992), Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared, Kirikou and the Sorceress (Kirikou et la Sorciere), and even …
In The Wake Of The Anthropocene: The Ecopoetics Of Shakespearean Film Adaptations, Ioannis Garganourakis
In The Wake Of The Anthropocene: The Ecopoetics Of Shakespearean Film Adaptations, Ioannis Garganourakis
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation explores how Shakespeare’s plays and their film adaptations reflect and respond to the conditions of the Anthropocene, arguing that both forms of art can foster an environmental ethic attuned to the interconnectedness of human and nonhuman worlds. It proposes that the Anthropocene did not begin with industrialization but rather intensified a much older pattern of human ecological intervention, a process that becomes increasingly visible from the early modern period to the twentieth century. By situating Shakespeare within this expanded temporal framework, this dissertation reveals how his works anticipate and interrogate the very assumptions about anthropocentrism that underpin modern …

Modern Day Saints And The Production Of A Contemporary Pilgrimage Site: Comparative Analysis Of St. Pio Of San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy And Sai Baba Of Shirdi, India, Kiran Shinde, Anna Trono Prof
International Journal of Religious Tourism and Pilgrimage
Places valorised by saints have attracted pilgrimage for a long time as devotion to saints is a way to achieve both material wellbeing and spiritual growth. Yet, the cult following of modern-day saints in contemporary societies has become a topic for exploration only in recent years (Di Giovine, 2010; Shinde & Pinkney; 2013, Srinivas, 2008). A few excellent hagiographies discuss the material and non-material world created around charismatic modern-day saints with global followership (Waghorne, 2004; Weiss, 2005; Shepherd, 1986). Given the immense popularity of modern-day saints many questions arise- what kind of pilgrimage landscape is created around them? Are they …

The Emerging Social Media Water Cooler? Motivations For Reddit Use In A Niche League, Jan Boehmer, Brendan O'Hallarn
Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications
Social media play a key role in sport marketing—with athletes, teams, and leagues directly engaging with their audiences. While Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter have received much attention in the sport marketing and communication literature, research on Reddit is scant. This is particularly noteworthy, as the platform is growing rapidly and promises utility for users with nonmainstream interests to find and engage with each other. This study employs a uses and gratifications approach to investigate how prevalent Reddit use is among fans of the United Football League (UFL), what motivates users to engage with the platform, and whether Reddit use leads …

Platforms, Power, And The Public Square: The Debate On Editorial Rights In The Age Of Social Media, Donovan Smith
Platforms, Power, And The Public Square: The Debate On Editorial Rights In The Age Of Social Media, Donovan Smith
St. Thomas Law Review
Social media has taken a hold on society and continues to tighten its grip; its influence is undeniable. Today, billions of people all over the world use social media for news, weather updates, communication, commerce, and self-expression every day. With the increasing dependence on social media, it is essential that the civil liberties and fundamental rights of social media users remain protected. Over the last decade, censorship of users and content on social media has become a key political talking point, especially when coupled with concurring events like elections and global pandemics. But is any of this censorship even allowed? …

Directing Young Actors, Mitchell Whelan
Theses : Honours
This reflective practice case study examines the studio environment of a small ensemble of female actors aged 16-19, in the rehearsal of a one-act play. Performing arts researchers working in youth spaces commonly adhere to conventions of ethnodrama and facilitate a process in which participants contribute personal stories as performance material. The present paper uses a published text (Slut by Patricia Cornelius) to position participants as actors, rather than devisors who must conjure original material. Through critical reflection, the project assesses the impact of developing performance material slowly while also making time for socialisation between castmates. Drawing on my repertoire …

The Discrimination Of Methodist Students At Oxford University, 1768, Nicholas M. Railton
The Asbury Journal
Discrimination and persecution are perennial features of church history. This paper deals with six Oxford students who were expelled from the university for what were called ‘Methodist’ practices and beliefs. Their university trial is analysed as are the support structures within the evangelical network in the eighteenth century. The paper sheds light upon the lives of the students post-exmatriculation.
