The modern Supreme Court has defined “discriminatory intent” as a strict-liability concept. It does not matter why the government sorts people by a protected characteristic, such as race or sex; it matters only that the government does sort people by such a characteristic. This principle is the key holding of affirmative-action cases, such as Students for Fair Admissions, Inc. v. President & Fellows of Harvard College. Yet, in the recent case United States v. Skrmetti, the Court seemed to focus not on the question of whether the government sorted people by sex (it did), but on the question …

Aims: We sought to evaluate whether loss of reduction in lateral Kirschner (K)-wiring is noninferior to crossed K-wiring in closed reduction and percutaneous pinning of Type III supracondylar humerus fractures.

Methods: A prospective, randomized, non-inferiority trial was conducted. Emergency department patients aged three to seven years with Type III supracondylar humerus fractures were invited to participate with informed consent. Block randomization allocated patients into one of two pin configuration groups (lateral or crossed). Surgical technique and postoperative management were standardized between groups. All patients were treated with above-elbow casts, but no strict standardized protocol was applied. The primary outcome was …

This essay explores the contradictions in legal theory and human experience through creative nonfiction. Its main purpose is to argue that a truly just society requires acknowledging the profound influence of individual narratives on the law. This is supported by blending personal narratives, critical analysis, and philosophical inquiry to reveal the gap between codified law and lived realities for marginalized individuals. This unique Legal Poetics methodology employs a series of six vignettes, such as the author's and Luis's shared experiences with traumatic brain injury and the denial of justice, as data. My research, grounded in decolonial historiography and performance studies, examines how Spain has historically relied on the exoticized Other for the construction of its national identity. At the center of my analyses is Carmen, the eponymous protagonist of French writer Prosper Mérimée’s 1845 novella Carmen. Through this dissertation, I attend to the process through which this fictional character turned into the enduring myth of Carmen—the Orientalized, quintessential Spanish woman—and the consequences that upholding this myth has on the real lives of women, historically and contemporarily. I depart from the assumption that this myth-making process emerged in response to Spain’s inability …

This study examines folktales as a form of oral literature whose vitality depends on memory and the transmission of knowledge. Through a qualitative approach, the author explores the causes of the decline of this cultural heritage. She highlights the roles and functions of folktales (educational, identity-related, symbolic), while emphasizing their aesthetic significance. The study focuses on efforts to safeguard folktales in their traditional form and within the broader literary and cultural heritage.

Focusing on Nefertiti et le rêve d’Akhnaton, this article examines how Andrée Chedid revisits universal history to make reality and fiction interact and to revive the “City of Horizon.” It analyzes the intersection of history and imagination and the dual requirement of poetic-literary achievement and political-ideological awareness. Particular attention is given to the novel’s narrative polyphony (Nefertiti and the scribe Boubastos), the celebration of writing as a guardian of memory, and the use of introspection to bring historical events closer to the reader. The Sea In All Its Forms In Maupassant’S Une Vie: A Lexicometric Study, Ouafae Benzina

This paper investigates the theme of the sea in Guy de Maupassant’s Une vie through lexicometric and lexical-statistical methods. Using a digitized corpus and the Hyperbase software, it identifies salient forms and lexical networks related to the sea and examines their contribution to the novel’s stylistic and thematic construction. The quantitative approach aims to objectify dominant patterns (frequencies, specificities, hapax) and to show how the sea operates as an ambivalent motif—separation/integration, threat/attraction—within Maupassant’s narrative imagination.

“’Learning from the Legacies of Phillis Wheatley Peters’: A Collaborative Pedagogical Public Humanities Project” is an account of a Spring, 2024 Zoom and web-based public humanities project for primary, secondary and post-secondary teachers interested in learning more about African-born American poet Phillis Wheatley Peters (c.1746-1784) and developing writing-based curricular materials about her. Foregrounding the levels of pedagogy the project involved, the essay describes leaders’ planning processes and our sessions with teacher-participants and provides links to the materials the teachers prepared. The instructional approaches the essay details can be adapted by educators working in a wide variety of classroom settings.

As one of Phillis Wheatley Peters’ most famous poems, “On Being Brought from Africa to America” is often introduced to undergraduates; however, it is also an often-misunderstood text by undergraduate and graduate students alike when they first read it. Students often believe that Wheatley Peters is happy about her condition as an enslaved person in America and out of Africa. But upon deeper analysis of her word choice, use of punctuation, and biblical references, a reader can see her unique voice as an enslaved person criticizing slavery through sarcasm. Such responses can discourage instructors from teaching the poem, especially in …

This article argues that teaching Phillis Wheatley-Peters (c. 1753-1784) as a moral authority during the American Revolution provides a robust historical framework for fostering an empowering humanism in students. When Phillis Wheatley Peters wrote to Indigenous Mohegan Minister Samson Occom (1723-1792) in 1774, she expressed satisfaction with his reasons for recognizing the conditions faced by enslaved Africans in North America. Period films and television dramas of the twenty-first century use scenes of attendance at the theatre by women in the (long) eighteenth century as a test of their capacity to feel. Such scenes provide an opportunity to measure the competing affordances of screen and stage regarding affect in the eighteenth century and our present moment.
