Preparation for and entry into World War II required significant changes in the United States, especially for the U.S. Army. Mobilization of manufacturing facilities created noteworthy opportunities for women to work in jobs traditionally considered the domain of men. Construction at camps and forts drove substantial improvement for local economics still suffering from the aftershocks of the great depression. And millions of men-and a large number of women-entered military service.

In September 1974, Black Belt Magazine published a letter from Karen Swanson, a school teacher living in Tallahassee, Florida. Swanson thanked the editors for their recent hire of the New York historian and martial artist Valarie Eads to write a reoccurring column in their magazine on female fighters titled "Fighting Woman." Swanson described herself as an active feminist who wanted to learn self-defense under the guidance of a female teacher. Swanson lamented that there were no female martial arts teachers in north Florida and therefore she had been forced to look for a male instructor. Swanson explained that most male …

The Politics Of Performance: Rollins College And The Annie Russell Theatre, Joan M. Jensen

Today, Florida boasts important venues for the performing arts. Orlando is ringed by dozens of theme parks that furnish entertainment for masses of people seeking to sample "popular" culture. These popular forms of entertainment are a backdrop for the somewhat smaller stage of "elite" or "serious" performing arts: Ringling's Asolo Center for the Performing Arts in Sarasota and the Fringe Theater Festival in Miami, which attract thousands of people each year, are examples. These are two faces of the same human need for performance before an audience, and for spaces to gather the audiences.

This Article discusses the Top 10 BioTechnology Patent Cases of 2020. Suffice it to say that biotechnology patent law will continue to vigorously evolve, and we plan to continue our coverage of its evolution beyond the current trilogy of Biotechnology Patent Law Top Tens. This thesis reexamines the work of Antoine Watteau through a social-art historical lens. Traditionally, Watteau's fêtes galantes have been closely aligned to the culture of the French nobility. However, a closer look into the artist's background, training, social milieu, and the class identity of his primary buyers reveals an alternative class alignment, inviting new interpretations for Watteau's most elusive work. This thesis challenges the close association between Watteau and the French nobility and aims to broaden the socio-visual landscape from which Watteau was drawing, namely that of a burgeoning bourgeois consumer culture. African American voices have been the main sources of influence on society and culture. For this reason, it is important that African Americans speak up and reclaim their voices. Not only are their voices important, but the stories that lie behind the voices are what need to be amplified. With the application of postcolonial theory, this thesis takes modern stories located in North America depicting racist behavior towards African Americans from the year 1970 to present-day New York City in order to fully amplify the process of social struggle. Greek choreographer Tzeni Argyriou’s ANΩNYMO draws from traditional folk dances from all over the world to articulate the social disconnect that has become all too familiar in recent times. The result is a celebration of human connection and shared joy. A journey back to a time when art was not something created by particular, named individuals but a practice that brought people – and kept communities – together. ANΩNYMO observes our lives through collective body memory, the experience of passing traditional dances on, and their complete transformation into a contemporary movement idiom.

David and Marie Brinkley are providing the lead gift for a new amphitheater complex, which will be constructed on the former Hardee’s location, 206 South Main Street. Gardner-Webb purchased the 1.78-acre property in January 2021.

This paper examines Galvanizing Steel, a performance event through the lens of John Martin’s concept of “metakinesis,” Dominguez considers spectatorship and interpretation as active participation. She queries kinesthetic empathy and whether centering the corporeal experience of the audience enhances their overall ability to connect with the performers and the performance.
