The Allure And Effects Of The True Crime Genre, Geralyn Jones Apr 2022

The Allure And Effects Of The True Crime Genre, Geralyn Jones

Academic Festival

The True Crime genre is a booming industry with new series, films, and documentaries to watch all the time. This paper takes a deeper look into the reasons that people are drawn to the genre. However, even though it is a great source of entertainment, the media’s use of drama and advertising techniques causes people to have a warped sense of the criminal justice system and lose touch with the reality of these cases. In that respect this paper also examines the effects that the dramatization of these events has on the viewers.

The Social And Hierarchical Implications Of The Propagation Of A Male God, Julianna Rezza Apr 2022

The Social And Hierarchical Implications Of The Propagation Of A Male God, Julianna Rezza

Academic Festival

In this paper, I will be discussing how the use of the word father in the Bible has created and continues to create a church hierarchy in which women cannot hold authority equivalent to a man, thereby displaying that the propagation of Father God impacts how women function in today’s society. First, I explore the use of the word father in both the earlier and late portions of the Bible and the lines drawn to certain male traits. Often in the Old Testament and portions of the text that “advise,” we understand the disciplining authority of God, how God is …

Saying A "Hail Mary" To Make A "Hail Mary": Religion And Its Impact On Athletes, Angelica Zacarola

Academic Festival

Religion is an integral part of modern society (Emmons). Whether one believes in it or not, the conversation is still happening thus influencing one’s personality. Although they are seen as larger than life, elite athletes are human as well and deal with a variety of human experiences such as loneliness, stress, anxiety, and lack of motivation. Coping with these things can be challenging and scary, as elite athletes often lack the time and attention they need for their mental health: this is where they can turn to religion. Religious athletes are proven to be more successful in mental health, success …

Analysis Of Blood Borne Pathogen Exposure Monitoring Protocol Adherence In An Academic Medical Center: A Seven Year Analysis And Literature Review, Natavoot N. Chongswatdi Md, Callie Seaman Md, Diane Harman Rn, Bsn, William Rollyson Md, Adam M. Franks Md

Marshall Journal of Medicine

Introduction

Health care workers (HCW) are at risk for occupational blood borne pathogen exposures (BBPE). Effective prevention and management of BBPEs relies upon reporting and post-exposure follow-up protocol adherence. As post-exposure monitoring completion is largely unexplored, seven years of a university healthcare system’s BBPE exposure data was explored and compared to documented rates.

Methods

The Marshall Health Occupational Health and Wellness division collected seven years (2012-2018) of BBPE follow-up monitoring adherence rates and demographic data. Data for HCW occupation, exposure incident, and source patient disease status were evaluated. Differences were analyzed with Chi square, Fischer Exact and logistic regression tests. …

No Happy Endings: Anna May Wong’S American Film Roles From 1931-1942, Kayla G. O'Leary Apr 2022

No Happy Endings: Anna May Wong’S American Film Roles From 1931-1942, Kayla G. O'Leary

CSB and SJU Distinguished Thesis

In the 1930s and ‘40s, shifting relations with China, Japan, and the United States drastically impacted American public sentiment towards these Asian countries. US films produced during these decades starring Anna May Wong illuminate how harmful stereotypes about Chinese culture and people were portrayed on screen. I analyze five of Wong’s films from this period to examine how the gendered and racial stereotypes within them provide a cultural lens of changing US-Chinese relations. The stereotypical archetypes of her characters, which include the formidable Dragon Lady, helpless American citizen, and Chinese war hero, demonstrate how American perceptions of China and Chinese …

Exploring The Impacts Of Student Classification On Perceptions Of Success, Mackenzie Richmond Apr 2022

Exploring The Impacts Of Student Classification On Perceptions Of Success, Mackenzie Richmond

Honors Theses

There are several definitions of success, and everyone has their own personal take. Some define success as receiving honors, rewards, or having good relationships, while researchers have their own success vocabulary. Although there is a battle between logic and sociality for perceptions of success, it is commonly agreed that success is linear and multifaceted. The purpose of this study is to explore the impact of student classification (undergraduate and graduate/professional students) on perceptions of success. Knowing how someone perceives success offers insight into that person. Such insight can equip therapists on ways to personalize a therapeutic approach, including goals and …

Engineering Faculty Articles and Research

Adolescent and young adult childhood cancer survivors experience health complications, late or long-term biomedical complications, as well as economic and psychosocial challenges that can have a lifelong impact on their quality-of-life. As childhood cancer survivors transition into adulthood, they must learn to balance their identity development with demands of everyday life and the near- and long-term consequences of their cancer experience, all of which have implications for the ways they use existing technologies and the design of novel technologies. In this study, we interviewed 24 childhood cancer survivors and six caregivers about their cancer survivorship experiences. The results of our …

Blurred Realities: Aids Plays As Activism, Maya Lieberman Apr 2022

Blurred Realities: Aids Plays As Activism, Maya Lieberman

Honors Theses

The AIDS epidemic in 1980s and 1990s America can—and must—be read not simply as an epidemic of disease, but also as an epidemic of hateful discourse that perpetuated the damaging perceptions of HIV/AIDS and those it most severely impacted. The onset of an epidemic has a way of unmooring society from the structures that it has built itself on. The indiscriminate spread of a deadly disease exposes, amplifies, and unsettles divisions of class, race, sexuality, gender, and perceived morality. In the sensory experience of living through the HIV/AIDS epidemic, a virus may seem to take on an almost magical component, …

A Reader’S Guide To Worship And Liturgical Studies, David Kneip Apr 2022

A Reader’S Guide To Worship And Liturgical Studies, David Kneip

Discernment: Theology and the Practice of Ministry

The history of writing about worship in the Christian tradition is almost as old as the tradition itself, and it shows no sign of abating anytime soon. As a result, readers may find it difficult to know where to begin reading, and how to evaluate books that are popular or otherwise available to them. This annotated bibliography aims to assist readers in navigating the huge field of Christian publishing in worship studies, both by offering specific book recommendations and by demonstrating some of the different sub-categories that one might examine in attempting to choose what to read or study. The …
