Hekate Of Lagina: A Goddess Performing Her Civic Duty, Amanda Herring Aug 2022

Hekate Of Lagina: A Goddess Performing Her Civic Duty, Amanda Herring

Art History Faculty Works

The Hellenistic Sanctuary of Hekate at Lagina represents the only site at which Hekate received state-sponsored cult at a monumental temple and a privileged place in the local pantheon. Elsewhere in Karia and the wider Greek world, Hekate was associated with magic and the underworld and received personal dedications at doorways and crossroads. This portrayal was echoed in art, where her character manifested in her triple-bodied form. Yet, at Lagina, part of the city of Stratonikeia, she was always represented with a single body. She was the focus of civic cult, in particular during the Hekatesia-Romaia festival, which celebrated the …

Cinematic Poe: A Survey Of Films Inspired By Edgar Allan Poe And Their Importance In Film History, Devon V. Bradley Aug 2022

Cinematic Poe: A Survey Of Films Inspired By Edgar Allan Poe And Their Importance In Film History, Devon V. Bradley

Theses and Dissertations

The relationship of Edgar Allan Poe’s works, their respective adaptations, and their place in film history remains underappreciated in contemporary scholarship. Additionally, many of the most significant director/auteurs in cinema history have Poe inspired films. This project explores the filmic legacy Poe and his stories share across a survey of significant filmmakers, who have created memorable interpretations of Poe’s works. This thesis seeks to consider connections between several well-known Poe film adaptations and what I consider to be their significance in the development of film as a medium over its history. My investigation compares a range of films inspired by …

Latina preservice science teachers make the transition from science student to teacher is scant. This study aims to address this gap by exploring improvisation as a pedagogical tool in order for Latina pre-service teachers make meaning of the transition from student to teacher and what this might mean in terms of identity.

According to Pool et al. (2011), “[u]sing arts-based instruction in a preservice teacher program has promise for fostering better pedagogical decisions to benefit learners at every level.” (p. 9). The purpose of this case-study is not only to fill a gap in the literature but also to explore …

Sold Out! Ochrona Konsumentów Przed Wykupieniem Biletów Przez Środki Automatyczne, Konrad Rutkowski Aug 2022

Sold Out! Ochrona Konsumentów Przed Wykupieniem Biletów Przez Środki Automatyczne, Konrad Rutkowski

internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)

Poza zbadaniem regulacji unijnej w artykule …

Vietnam Continued: The Battle For American Public Memory In Public School History Textbooks, Donnie Owens Aug 2022

Vietnam Continued: The Battle For American Public Memory In Public School History Textbooks, Donnie Owens

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The question of “how do we actively remember the past?” can perhaps best describe the purpose of public memory studies. Acknowledging this question, I analyze popular public-school textbooks to assess the way in which educational literature constructs the public memory of the Vietnam War. In total, the narratives of the texts construct a public memory of Vietnam as a controversial conflict contained within a decade of American uncertainty. However, these narratives also take care to minimize or leave aside the details of Vietnam’s lasting impact and in favor of reaffirming American exceptionalism. Ultimately, this thesis finds that students who read …

Es La Rosa, El Símbolo Más Proprio De La Pureza’ (The Rose Is The Most Appropriate Symbol Of Purity) An Analysis Of An 18th-Century Document Reflecting Female Monasticism In Mallorca, Brigid Powers

Art History Theses and Dissertations

Currently owned by the Bridwell Library at Southern Methodist University, an eighteenth-century profession object, the Clarissine Manuscript, offers insight into the inner workings of the cloistered Convent of Santa Clara in Palma, Mallorca. This thesis serves to outline and provide all available information about this object while analyzing such information and offering avenues for future research. By looking back through history and tracking the narrative of Saint of Clare of Assisi’s formation of the Poor Clares order, we are able to understand this object in a new way.

An understudied object, the Clarissine Manuscript depicts eighteen saints and martyrs bordering …

Static Evolution, Leah R. Scantlen Aug 2022

Static Evolution, Leah R. Scantlen

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

In Justin Maxwell's theatrical works, the stasis and stagnation of central characters are importantly made materially evident through costuming. For instance, in the play, Marie Antoinette's Head, the stagnation of civilization and society is explored while time zigzags over two thousand years. The movement of time and epochs is told through a colorful array of costumes, also indicating the growth and evolution of characters in each period. The protagonist, Leonardo, however, remains stuck in 1793. In another of Maxwell's works, the one-man, one-act play Exhausted Paint, the painter Vincent Van Gogh experiences a similar inert characterization. In both …

"Serving Time And It's No Longer A Crime: An Analysis Of The Proposed Cannabis Administration And Opportunity Act, Its Potential Effects At The Federal And State Level, And A Guide For Practical Application By Local Government", R. Allyce Bailey Jul 2022

"Serving Time And It's No Longer A Crime: An Analysis Of The Proposed Cannabis Administration And Opportunity Act, Its Potential Effects At The Federal And State Level, And A Guide For Practical Application By Local Government", R. Allyce Bailey

University of the District of Columbia Law Review

There has been much recent discussion surrounding cannabis use with some researchers supporting the use of medical marijuana, some investors relishing in the recently booming cannabis and CBD industry, and some states decriminalizing marijuana and even harsh controlled substances. As it appears, at least some public opinion is changing regarding marijuana, but the law has not effectively caught up to that change. Bias in the criminal justice system has led to the over-policing of, higher conviction rates, and harsher sentences for minorities. Thus, the decriminalization of marijuana alone does not remedy the grave disproportionate negative effects on populations of color …

Hybrid And Performative Spaces: Towards A New Analytical Lens, Ayman Kassem Jul 2022

Hybrid And Performative Spaces: Towards A New Analytical Lens, Ayman Kassem

Interiority

The exhibition space is a territory where architects and designers have experimented with hybrid and performative spatial qualities. However, such spatial mechanisms have expanded into other spatial practices. As we live in a constantly changing world, these practices allow spatial systems that adjust to continual changes in modes of living. Newer approaches to spatial transformation try to respond to the need for transience and flexibility. Hybrid and performative interventions are elaborated to transform existing spaces with strategic non-architectural rearrangements. As a result, our inhabited spaces, such as exhibitions, are becoming hybrid and performative. However, hybrid and performative may be perceived …

Queering Creativity: Why Maximalism Matters, Ac Panella Jul 2022

Queering Creativity: Why Maximalism Matters, Ac Panella

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

Creative studies has been a growing field that is often focused on either the psychological or social process. However, each of these approaches tends to erase the role of identity or political process. By introducing queer theory to creative theory we can start to see how the creative process is a way of challenging normative assumptions of being. This article will use the work of performance artist Taylor Mac as a focal point for the ways that queer identity and theory inform creative theory.
