Singing And Healing: Thought Paper, Kimberly Nearon Sep 2022

Singing And Healing: Thought Paper, Kimberly Nearon

Journal of Nonprofit Innovation

Singing can be a healing experience, both for the body and the soul (1, 3, 4). “Music has the ability to repair brain damage and return lost memories” (3). Common themes in recent studies and articles discuss how “singing releases endorphins, serotonin and dopamine - the ‘happy’ chemicals that boost your mood and make you feel good about yourself” (3). “Singing also counts as an aerobic activity as it introduces more oxygen into the blood leading to better circulations - and a better mood” (3). Singing can “stimulate the immune response”, “improve snoring”, and “improve lung function” benefiting those who …

Refuge And Resistance: Theater With Kurds And Yezidi Survivors Of Isis, Ellen Kaplan

Theatre: Faculty Publications

This essay looks at ongoing efforts to revitalize arts and culture among the Yezidi and broader Iraqi Kurdish communities. The Yezidi are survivors of the 2014 genocide perpetrated by the Islamic State (ISIS, also known by its Arabic acronym Da’esh) which resulted in mass killing, captivity and expulsion from their ancestral homeland of Mt. Sinjar in northern Iraq. They are part of the Kurdish people, who have engaged in centuries of struggle to protect their cultural and political identity, establish autonomy and ensure their security in the broader Middle East. After a brief overview of the Yezidi genocide and its …

Two Modes Of Cyclicality In The Ancient World, Yanming An Sep 2022

Two Modes Of Cyclicality In The Ancient World, Yanming An

Comparative Civilizations Review

The cyclical view of time and history appears in two modes represented respectively by the Indo-Hellenic and the Chinese tradition. The former contains a conception of Mahayuga or Great Year, which signifies the periodic destruction and reconstruction in the cosmos and human world. In addition, it analogizes human affairs to the celestial cycle and therefore generalizes the mode of cyclical movements in both the cosmos and the human world as “uniform rotation.” In contrast, the Chinese tradition incorporates Heaven and human into a unity, containing no conception of periodic interruption in the movement of Heaven-human unity. At the same, it …

Post-Digital Curation: The Contemporary Flaneur, Technology And The Artist Book, Jared O’Sullivan

Postgraduate

This project identifies and examines the emergent themes in the original photographic work of Australian photographer Jared O’Sullivan from 2009 – 2019 and reflects on the curation and production of a retrospective artist book that celebrates a decade of professional practice.

The exegesis explores how the creation of an artist book retrospective can illuminate underlying themes in past works and how curation as method facilitates the discovery and communication of these new insights into practice. Referencing the works of Charles Baudelaire, Walter Benjamin and Susan Sontag, the literature review explores the effects of technology in relation to photographic theory and …

Jihadist Attacks In The West: 2014-2022, Lorenzo Vidino, Francesco Marone, Program On Extremism, George Washington University, National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, And Education Center

Reports, Projects, and Research

Jihadism in the West has a roughly four-decade long history. Its first, embryonal presence dates back to the 1980s, when scattered groups of Western-based volunteers traveled to Afghanistan to fight against the Soviet Union. Around the same time, a few Middle Eastern and North African jihadists fleeing their countries of origin received asylum in various Western countries. Since then, both Europe and North America have steadily been home to pockets of sympathizers of jihadist ideology. These pockets have historically been extremely heterogeneous and have undergone huge changes over time. They have always varied in size and complexity; while some are …

Walking Into History And Back To The Future: Guiding And Inspiring Medical Professionals Through A Medical Humanities Program, Te-Chuan Chen, Pei-Yi Chou, Meng-Chih Lin, Shun-Sheng Chen

Journal of Medical Education

Introduction: Medical humanities education applies philosophy, history, religion, art, and literature to improve medical practitioners' humanistic literacy. We conducted a medical humanities activity to examine the impact of humanities on medical practitioners for humanistic enrichment. Methods: We used a modified ADDIE model to develop a program that included a history exhibition and guided tour. Pre-test, post-test, survey, feedback, and reflections provided data on participants' perspectives. Target participants/invitees were medical professionals, hospital staff, and students in related fields. The study was conducted using mixed methods, and data were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. A two-tailed alpha was set at p < 0.05. …

Library Tautology: A Reenactment Of The One-Shot, Nora Almeida

Publications and Research

If there’s one thing you learn today, let it be this: keywords. Not specific keywords but the idea of them. If you whisper the correct keywords into the algorithm, you will achieve relevance. If you don’t achieve relevance on the first try (which is super common), imagine you’re an academic with a specialization in a super-niche disciplinary area who wrote a research article. Then imagine keywords you (they) would use and try those.

Weaponizing Proof Of Harm In First Amendment Cases: When Scientific Evidence And Deference To The Views Of Professional Associations Collide In The Battle Against Conversion Therapy, Clay Calvert Sep 2022

Weaponizing Proof Of Harm In First Amendment Cases: When Scientific Evidence And Deference To The Views Of Professional Associations Collide In The Battle Against Conversion Therapy, Clay Calvert

UF Law Faculty Publications

This Article uses the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit’s divided decision in Otto v. City of Boca Raton in late 2020 as a springboard for examining battles in First Amendment jurisprudence over proof of causation of harm and the level of deference owed to the judgments of learned societies. A two-judge majority held in Otto that a pair of local ordinances banning speechbased conversion therapy on minors violated the First Amendment, with those measures failing the rigorous strict scrutiny standard of review. Crucial to the majority’s ruling was its conclusion that insufficient evidence exists that conversion therapy—also …
