The Department of Theatre and Dance at East Tennessee State University will open its 2022-23 season with “Androcles and the Lion,” a show for the entire family, Oct. 20-23.

Performances will be presented in the Bert C. Bach Theatre at the Martin Center for the Arts Thursday and Friday, Oct. 20-21, at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 22-23, at 2 p.m. The Oct. 22 matinee will be a sensory-friendly performance.

Brian Boydell (1917-2000) Mosaics & Sketches: Chamber Music for Harp

Mosaics and Sketches explores the Irish composer Brian Boydell’s chamber music for harp written over two decades, 1960-1980. In this recording, Cliona Doris performs Boydell’s solo work for pedal harp, A Pack of Fancies for a Travelling Harper and is joined by TU Dublin Conservatoire colleagues in three chamber works: Four Sketches for Two Irish Harps, Five Mosaics for Violin and Harp, and Quintet for Flute, Harp and String Trio.

The recording was funded through a research grant from Technological University Dublin.

Unintended Repercussions: Copyright Termination And The Punitive Effect Of § 203(A)(3) On The Rights Of Creators, Loren E. Mulraine

This article examines the unintended consequences of the copyright termination provisions under the Copyright Act of 1976, focusing specifically on the restrictive five-year termination window set forth in 17 U.S.C. § 203(a)(3). While Congress intended termination rights to rebalance bargaining power between authors and corporate transferees—particularly in industries such as music publishing and recording—the statutory framework has, in practice, imposed procedural burdens that frequently operate to the detriment of creators. Through historical analysis of U.S. copyright law, including the bifurcated renewal structure of earlier statutes and the legislative development of modern termination rights, the article argues that § 203’s rigid …

Historically, South African theater has utilized the stage as a platform to dismantle apartheid, pointing to its purposeful oppressive structure as the cause for much human suffering. In the 28 years since the dismantling of apartheid, contemporary South African theater has retained the same role, critically questioning the ways people are systematically disenfranchised. A need is surfacing, however, to address the causes for contemporary South African political disfunctions and societal inequities, other than apartheid. In 1996, Nepal was engulfed in a civil war when the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) – hereafter referred to a— launched a guerilla war against the state. In historical and political scholarship on the conflict, there has been a tendency to situate the conflict with a neat set of causes and consequences. In focusing on the macroscale changes, such narrations of “Big History” obscure the experiences of the Nepali people who were—and continue to be— impacted by war with the loss and violence endured clinically tallied in human right reports and social science studies. Using rural Mahrasthra as a case study, I was able to explore the medical ethics and common dilemmas that occur in Rural India. Through a collection of interviews and articles, I was able to piece together my understanding of some common ethical challenges that India faces, emphasizing ones that were unique to the location and circumstance. Using observations I made through my work in the hospital, I learned that limited resources effects all sides of ethics in the medical field, with a significant effect on economics, hospital structure, and clinical protocol. This school improvement plan intends to counter the growing trend of negative student behaviors by moving from a partial to full implementation of the social-emotional leadership program called Leader in Me in a suburban Midwest middle school. Studies show that effective social-emotional programs can improve positive behaviors and improve academics in school. The Leader in Me program is explained within the plan. Studies suggest that the Leader in Me program improves the overall culture and climate of a school when executed with high fidelity and full implementation. Parametrized motion planning algorithms have high degrees of universality and flexibility, as they are designed to work under a variety of external conditions, which are viewed as parameters and form part of the input of the underlying motion planning problem. In this paper, we analyze the parametrized motion planning problem for the motion of many distinct points in the plane, moving without collision and avoiding multiple distinct obstacles with a priori unknown positions. This complements our prior work Cohen et al. [3] (SIAM J. Appl. Algebra Geom. 5, 229–249), where parametrized motion planning algorithms were introduced, and the obstacle-avoiding collision-free …

The City-Sin: Collective Responsibility For The Plague In Early Modern London, Andrew Fleck

Literatures and Cultural Studies Faculty Publications

The epidemic of bubonic plague that struck London in 1603 created its own culture of collectivity. Instead of seeking to place blame on others, the writers responding to the epidemic understood the disease to be divine punishment and a call to collective moral reform. Analyzing the plague pamphlets of Thomas Dekker, William Muggins, Thomas Middleton, and a Dutch refugee residing in London, Jacob Cool, this article argues that the focus on personal moral responsibility for the plague and the need for collective reform created an unexpected culture of collectivity in early modern London.

Fibre-reinforced polymers (FRP) have been presented as materials that possess properties that are comparable to conventional building materials, while also being more sustainable. This study describes the material and its properties and compares the materials using a life-cycle assessment (LCA) modelling approach. The objective of this paper is to perform a cradle-to-grave (from resource extraction to the disposal stage) analysis of pultruded FRP material and compare it to conventional building materials used in a typical dwelling. This analysis was conducted in accordance with LCA standard EN15978. A streamlined LCA was conducted, whereby the major impacts observed included the global warming …
