Jitney
Theatre and Performance Studies Programs
It is 1977 in a Black neighborhood of Pittsburgh known as the Hill District. Drivers of unlicensed cabs (jitneys) fight for love, survival, and respect as the powers-that-be threaten to close down their garage in the name of neighborhood improvement.
Though Jitney is one of August Wilson’s first plays, it was the last of his 10-play American Century Cycle to premiere on Broadway. Using Wilson’s characteristically rich language, Jitney explores what happens when tempers flare, potent secrets are revealed, and the fragile threads that bind people together threaten to come undone.

Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari
Presence-As-Resistance: Feminist Activism And The Politics Of Social Contestation In Iran, Navid Pourmokhtari
Journal of International Women's Studies
Using a Foucauldian perspective on power and resistance, this paper traces the history of oppositional movements founded by Iranian women to bring about fundamental social and political change during President Mohammad Khatami’s second administration (2001-2005). Denied the political rights, freedoms and opportunities available to oppositional groups operating in Western democratic countries, these feminist movements adopted a radically new strategy for winning social and political rights grounded in an everyday politics of social negation and social subversion of the status quo played out in urban public spaces. Referred to here as “presence-as-resistance,” this strategy constituted an everyday mode of opposition involving …

"Musical Smiles": The Cuban Contradanza And Its Impact On Latin American Music, Jeriel K. Jorguenson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This study examines the influence of the Cuban contradanza, paying special interest on the lives of two Cuban figures who advanced the form most: Manuel Saumell (1818-1870) and Ignacio Cervantes (1847-1905). The document will begin with an introduction to Cuba in the nineteenth century in order to learn about the environment in which these two composers were forged. Next, the history of the contradanza will be assessed, detailing how the dance was performed and how the music was structured. Following this, the lives of Saumell and Cervantes will be detailed, from their biographies and training to the danzas which they …

Experimental Music And Collaboration: Developing Artistry Through Performance Practice, John Lambert
Experimental Music And Collaboration: Developing Artistry Through Performance Practice, John Lambert
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
This project locates collaboration and collaborative performance as a potential site for artistic growth. This study analyzes six collaborative projects: composed pieces for electric guitar accompanying a staged performance of collaged texts, an audio-visual installation, the preparation of several short pieces to accompany choreographed dances, a 90-minute soundtrack to a performance mixed live, an ongoing improvisational duo, and a live visuals performance to accompany Sunburned Hand of the Man at Duke University. It traces the growth of my artistry while also providing a method for both doing and writing about collaboration. In addition, it offers a model for understanding collaborative …

2022-2023 Artists Invoke the Powers of Community as They Bring Audiences Into Fiery, Mysterious, Illuminating Visions of Our World
Why are we speaking? To whom are we speaking? About whom are we speaking? How are we speaking? From what place are we speaking? A visceral work from a revolutionary company, assembling nine dancers in a frenzied, morphing mass. A constant flow of overflowing imagination that visualizes. Nine young dancers develop a series of images inspired by the daily lives of Black people in Brazil, creating poetry from these broken abandoned nothings.

Interpretation Performed By Certified Tourist Guides In Lisbon During The Pandemic: A Case Study, Luis Miguel Brito, Cristina Carvalho
Interpretation Performed By Certified Tourist Guides In Lisbon During The Pandemic: A Case Study, Luis Miguel Brito, Cristina Carvalho
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
Interpretation quality distinguishes tourist guides. According to an investigation carried out by the authors in 2012, tourists who travel with a guide claim that although these professionals play many different, relevant, and complementary roles, interpretation is, without a doubt, the most important asset. In Europe, a traveller can find tourist guides who have a certification issued by international European organisations and who have gone through training in interpretation, together with guides who do not have any training at all and are not certified by any organisation. This paper is only about the former. The idea of conducting this study arose …
Smart City Tours As An Innovative Way To (Re)Discover Urban Environments In An Italian Context, Miriam L. Weiß
Smart City Tours As An Innovative Way To (Re)Discover Urban Environments In An Italian Context, Miriam L. Weiß
International Journal of Tour Guiding and Visitor Attraction Research
This article explores the foundations upon which to build innovation and further professionalise the tour guiding sector in an Italian context. It is based on a cooperation initiative started in March 2020 just at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic which proposes smart city tours as innovative, sustainable, and creative ways to (re)discover urban environments with the expected impact to make tour participants think, influence post-tour behaviour towards sustainability, and to provide a differentiated view of a visited place. The study is designed as a formative evaluation prior to introducing measures that allow further exploitation of the potential for smart …
