The First Amendment And Military Justice: Threats To Political Neutrality, Joshua Paldino
The First Amendment And Military Justice: Threats To Political Neutrality, Joshua Paldino
Notre Dame Law Review Reflection
This backdrop illustrates a throughline that runs throughout, and creates tension within, the Military Justice system. On the one hand, there is a need to protect the individual rights of servicemembers. This concern is driven (in part) by the intuition reflected in Judge O’Connor’s opening sentences—those sworn to protect constitutional liberties should surely enjoy the benefits of that which they protect. On the other, individual rights protections must yield, to some degree, to the needs of military life and military exigency. Of course, "to some degree" is the space in which debate and maneuverability resides. But while discretionary space certainly …

Improving Stakeholder Involvement In High Schools Using Community-Based Student Internships And Student Information Systems, Richard Lee Dooley
Masters Theses & Specialist Projects
Stakeholder involvement in education, according to literature, has been shown to decrease steadily as students progress from elementary to high school. Stakeholder involvement in this study included community involvement in the form of community advisory councils to assist in increasing the number of secondary students’ internship experiences available for a small, rural high school made up of approximately 300 students. Stakeholder involvement also included increasing parental involvement using technology in the form of student information systems and access to parents and students via smartphone apps and computer access.
This improvement science, mixed-methods project included two iterations of interventions aimed at …

Recession Emerges As The Most Likely Scenario, Eric Thompson
Recession Emerges As The Most Likely Scenario, Eric Thompson
Business in Nebraska
The United States economy faces the prospect of a second recession as the Federal Reserve Bank continues to raise interest rates to confront inflationary forces. These forces include elevated asset prices and a wage-price spiral. Further interest rate increases are likely given a challenging environment to reduce inflation. Challenges include limited migration and a slow-growing labor force, trade restrictions, regulatory restrictions that limit energy production and raise the minimum wage as well as excessive federal government spending. Federal spending through the CARES Act, Coronavirus Supplemental Appropriations Act, American Rescue Plan, and Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act continue to fuel excess …

Don’T Judge A Book By Its Covr: Learning And Training In Virtual Reality; The Effects Of Two Levels Of Immersion, Kendall Carmody, Meredith Carroll
Aeronautics Faculty Publications
Immersive devices, such as virtual reality (VR) devices are swiftly being integrated into military and civil operations as advanced tools for training, with studies observing the beneficial aspects of employing these devices for training cognitive skills (Xie et al., 2021). However, further research is needed to understand specific characteristics of the learning effectiveness of the technology and identify which levels of immersion benefit specific learning constructs in training. This study examined the effect of immersion on four constructs related to learning, including memory retention, learner engagement, learning performance in the form of knowledge acquisition, and perceived learning in a virtual …

Perceived Quality Of Senior Care In An Assisted Living Facility Following The Outbreak Of Covid-19, Kaylie Hill
Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects
The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a monumental obstacle to the healthcare field in terms of severely reducing the number of healthcare workers. Among the many industries affected by staffing shortages are assisted living facilities (ALFs), in which residents are dependent on care staff for daily assistance. This study sought to investigate whether long-term residents of ALFs perceive a difference in the quality of their care under the circumstances of the pandemic as opposed to those of pre-pandemic times. Semi-structured interviews were facilitated with 10 long-term residents who have been residing in an Omaha ALF since prior to the outbreak of …

Simulating Emergency Evacuation Response In An Auditorium Space, Anna Lee
Simulating Emergency Evacuation Response In An Auditorium Space, Anna Lee
Industrial Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
The successful execution of emergency evacuations is very important for the protection of the public. Some emergency events, such as fires, can occur with very little warning and turn into a dangerous situation in less than a minute. With high population densities, universities have increased risk involved with evacuations. One specific area that presents high risk is auditorium spaces such as lecture halls with high densities combined with added barriers such as tables and chairs. The ability to assess a building’s emergency preparedness is necessary for keeping the public safe. Simulation is a way to conduct a theoretical event and …
Debs And The Federal Equity Jurisdiction, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray
Debs And The Federal Equity Jurisdiction, Aditya Bamzai, Samuel L. Bray
Notre Dame Law Review
The United States can sue for equitable relief without statutory authorization. The leading case on this question is In re Debs, and how to understand that case is of both historical and contemporary importance. Debs was a monumental opinion that prompted responses in the political platforms of major parties, presidential addresses, and enormous academic commentary. In the early twentieth century, Congress enacted several pieces of labor legislation that reduced Debs’s importance in the specific context of strikes. But in other contexts, the question whether the United States can bring suit in equity remains disputed to this day. The …

How Does Children’S Literature Portray Global Perspectives?, Bogum Yoon
How Does Children’S Literature Portray Global Perspectives?, Bogum Yoon
Journal of Global Education and Research
The need for global education is increasing in this global era, and children’s literature becomes an essential resource to address this need. However, there is little research on how global perspectives are depicted in children’s literature. The current study fills the gap in our understanding by examining contemporary children’s picture books that were published in the United States from 2010 to 2016. Findings show that the picture books reflect several important elements of global education. However, there is an imbalance among the topics and genres. Although global awareness through environmental issues was emphasized through informational texts, transnational story lines on …

Using Sustainable Web Design Practices: Website Redesign For The Climatemusic Project, Charlotte M. Saunders
Graphic Communication
Sustainable practices go beyond reducing, reusing, and recycling in the physical world. In the digital world, design has a high environmental impact, so the choices designers make can eat up electricity and raise their carbon footprint. Therefore, designing low-carbon sites through UX, imagery, and color, and using a sustainability host is very beneficial for both usability and the environment. The ClimateMusic Project is a non-profit organization that aims to raise climate change awareness through music. This organization seeks to reduce their carbon footprint as well as help raise awareness through their Take Action web page. For my senior project I …

When Advocacy Becomes (In)Voluntary: A Thematic Analysis Of Disability Focused Organizations, Michelle Brazeau
All Theses
Only 19.1% of people with disabilities are currently employed (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022b). Stigma associated with disability often forces people with disabilities to have limited options in terms of employment. This has caused organizations like Bitty & Beaus Coffee and The Prospector Theater to make it their mission to hire people with disabilities. To better understand how these organizations are communicating about disability online a thematic analysis of the Instagram pages of Bitty & Beaus Coffee and The Prospector Theater was conducted. The findings suggest that these organizations use the image and likeness of the employees with disabilities to …

Investigation Of Rainfall Patterns And Its Impact On Highway Embankments, David Burrows
Investigation Of Rainfall Patterns And Its Impact On Highway Embankments, David Burrows
All Theses
Rainfall-induced slope failure is a common geotechnical hazard in Texas. Rainfall infiltration results in a reduction in soil matric suction and shear strength, leading to the instability of highway slopes. Rainfall intensity and duration have been identified as one of the major causes of earthen slope stability problems. In response to varied rainfall events, the unsaturated soil behavior differs depending on the soil type. The rainfall and soil data were used to develop a pattern which identified the slopes which proved unstable. The objective of this paper is to investigate the influence of different rainfall characteristics on slopes constructed on …

Hispanic/Latino Mothers Of Children With Developmental Disabilities: Identifying Factors Associated With Practicing Self-Care And Mental Health Outcomes, Jessica Gutierrez
Capstone Experience: Master of Public Health
Caring for a child with developmental disabilities can be challenging, exhausting, and overwhelming for many parents. The level of care that a child with disabilities requires can be intense, resulting in stress and negatively impacting caregivers' mental health. Many Hispanic/Latino mothers of children with developmental disabilities are not practicing self-care or using support services; thus, the mothers may experience high stress, depression, and anxiety. Previous research studies have found adverse psychological effects such as high levels of stress, depression, and anxiety. This quantitative study sought to identify the gaps and barriers Hispanic/Latino mothers of children with developmental disabilities encounter when …
