Autism, Comorbidities, And Adaptive Functioning: A Potential Moderator, Joshua J. Montrenes Jul 2023

Autism, Comorbidities, And Adaptive Functioning: A Potential Moderator, Joshua J. Montrenes

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Deficits in adaptive functioning and the presence of comorbid symptomatology are both commonly associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Previous research has identified relationships between functional level (e.g., intellectual quotient [IQ], adaptive functioning [AF]) and comorbid symptomatology in ASD. However, further insight into the relationship between AF, comorbid psychopathology, and ASD is unclear. Specifically, how AF affects the relationship between ASD and comorbid conditions is not well understood. Whether AF moderates the relationship between autism symptom severity and comorbid symptom severity in toddlers with ASD was examined. ASD symptom severity positively correlated with comorbid symptom severity across domains and negatively …

Does Narrative Quality Matter During Implementation Of A School-Based Prevention Intervention? A Test Of Narrative Engagement Theory, Youngju Shin, Michelle Miller-Day, Jonathan Pettigrew, Michael L. Hecht Jul 2023

Does Narrative Quality Matter During Implementation Of A School-Based Prevention Intervention? A Test Of Narrative Engagement Theory, Youngju Shin, Michelle Miller-Day, Jonathan Pettigrew, Michael L. Hecht

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

Narratives play a powerful role in sharing meaning and making sense of experiences. Specifically, health narratives convey storylines, characters, and messages about health-related behaviors and provide audiences with models for healthy behaviors, prompting audiences’ health-related reflections and decision-making. Narrative engagement theory (NET) explains how personal narratives can be integrated into interventions to promote health. This study utilizes NET to test direct and indirect effects of teachers’ narrative quality on adolescent outcomes during a school-based substance use prevention intervention that includes narrative pedagogy and an implementation strategy. Observational coding of teacher narratives in video-recorded lessons along with self-report student surveys (N …

With Every Name But Yours: A New Orchestration Of Clémence De Grandval's Stabat Mater, David Walters Jul 2023

With Every Name But Yours: A New Orchestration Of Clémence De Grandval's Stabat Mater, David Walters

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Clémence de Grandval was a late-Romantic composer whose extensive body of work, high profile performances, and numerous accolades should have garnered prominent placement among her contemporaries. Yet her vast collection of orchestral, choral, operatic, and other stage works have been all but forgotten.

Grandval’s Stabat Mater counted among her most popular works. Though the extant score for choir, harmonium (or organ), and piano explicitly references orchestral accompaniment1 , none of the parts or full score are available. Rather than providing a conductor’s guide or chord-by-chord analysis of Grandval’s work, this document breathes new life into this lost masterpiece by orchestrating …

Assessing The Waste Management Practices In Stone And Marble Industry In Palestine: Practical Implications, Ahmad Ramahi, Yahya Saleh, Ruaa Binsaddig, Rahaf Ghozzi, Bara’ Abu Baker, Abdelraheem Khateeb

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

This paper aims at assessing the current status of solid waste management practices in stone and marble industry (SMI) facilities in Palestine. To this end, mixed qualitative and quantitative approaches have been adopted. Morse specifically, both field visits and semi-structured interviews as well as questionnaires have been employed to gather needed data from a randomly selected sample of Palestinian SMI faculties. Such data include facilities’ demographics, their infrastructure and production inputs, solid and liquid waste estimated quantities as well as the current waste management practice. Statistical analyses show that SMI facilities are highly heterogeneous in their profiles and practices. Besides, …

Family Dining: Food And Drink In The Sopranos – A Gastrocritical Approach, Lisa Davies Jul 2023

Family Dining: Food And Drink In The Sopranos – A Gastrocritical Approach, Lisa Davies

Dissertations

This thesis uses gastrocriticism to explore food and drink in the 86 episodes of the long-form narrative HBO television series The Sopranos. Gastrocriticism is an emerging branch of literary criticism that draws on scholarship from a range of disciplines such as sociology, anthropology and cultural studies. A deeper understanding of the series was gained by using a structured framework of enquiry to explore narrative, setting, characterisation and genre through the lens of food and foodways. The Sopranos is a story of an Italian-American crime family and food is abundant in the series and bound up with the identity of …

Supporting Motor, Cognitive, And Psychosocial Functions For Children And Youth With Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review, Quandra Shanks, Angela Labrie Blackwell Jul 2023

Supporting Motor, Cognitive, And Psychosocial Functions For Children And Youth With Acquired Brain Injury: A Scoping Review, Quandra Shanks, Angela Labrie Blackwell

Summer 2023 Virtual OTD Capstone Symposium

Acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to an injury to the brain that is not hereditary, congenital, degenerative, or induced by birth trauma (Brain Injury Association [BIA], 2023). ABI is an umbrella term for all brain injuries, typically classified as traumatic (e.g., sports injury, fall) or non-traumatic (e.g., stroke, infection) (Wales et al., 2021). It is considered one of the leading causes of death and disability for individuals of all ages (Riccardi & Lundine, 2022). The BIA (2023) reports that ages 0-4 and 15-19 are at greater risk for brain injury. The severity of ABI among pediatrics is more severe than …

You’ve Gotta Read This: Summer Reading at Musselman Library

Each year, Musselman Library asks Gettysburg College faculty, staff, and administrators to help create a suggested summer reading list. We hope to inspire students and the rest of our community to take time in the summer to sit back, relax, and read or watch a memorable film.

For 2023, 100 employees offer 134 recommendations of favorite books, films, television shows, and podcasts, covering everything from alternate history to zoology.

This year's booklet marks the 20th anniversary of the YGRT publication with a special puzzle section celebrating two decades of reading recommendations.

Perspective, Invention, And Metatheater In Renaissance Literature, William Roudabush Jul 2023

Perspective, Invention, And Metatheater In Renaissance Literature, William Roudabush

English Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation challenges the misconception of post-Reformation England as iconophobic. On the contrary, it argues that early modern English poets and playwrights adapt Continental theories and techniques from painting, translating them into their own poetic and dramatic forms. It explores how allusions to contemporary perspectival images serve as governing metaphors and structural devices for the works in which they appear. Particularly in the genre of the Elizabethan epyllion and in works by Shakespeare, it suggests that texts are designed to be read “perspectively,” to borrow Shakespeare’s coinage, so that they are open to ambiguity and multiplicity, and capable of being …

Analysis Of The Appointment, Experiences, And Job Satisfaction Of Leaders In Large Schools Of Music, Claire Murphy Jul 2023

Analysis Of The Appointment, Experiences, And Job Satisfaction Of Leaders In Large Schools Of Music, Claire Murphy

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Little is known about how male and female middle-level leaders in schools of music come into their leadership roles, how they distribute their time among responsibilities, and how the distribution of time or other factors impact their professional identities, creative activities, and job satisfaction. Quantitative, self-reported survey data collected on music leaders in large schools of music and qualitative data collected from a panel discussion with representative leaders were used to analyze the five research questions in this explanatory sequential mixed-methods study. An analysis of the relationship between the two variables, gender and method of entry, showed a weak association. …
