Brave Spaces And Social Emotional Learning Strategies In The Theatre Classroom: What Do They Mean For All Students, Including Those Who Identify As Lgbtqia+?, John Payne-Rios
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
The purpose of this study was to examine the high school experiences of theatre students at a large university in Central Florida to determine which of the Collective for Academic and Social Emotional Learning's (CASEL) five social-emotional learning strategies (SEL 5) were remembered (CASEL, 2022). An opt-in focus group of students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+) and were involved in K-12 theatre were interviewed to examine if the SEL 5 strategies being utilized had a distinct impression on this vulnerable population (Krishan, et al., 2016). Due to scheduling, only one student was able …
Creating Living Characters Through Stanislavski's System And Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture, Robert Stark
Creating Living Characters Through Stanislavski's System And Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture, Robert Stark
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
This thesis examines the application of psychophysical techniques of Konstantin Stanislavski's System, coupled with use of Michael Chekhov's Psychological Gesture, to prepare for multiple roles of intersectional characters in the production of Paula Vogel's Indecent, directed by Dr. Julia Listengarten at the University of Central Florida, January 25th through February 7th, 2022. Vogel's Indecent revisits the events surrounding the production of Sholem Asch's God of Vengeance on Broadway in 1923, which featured a lesbian relationship. The show's cast and producers were arrested for depicting scenes of obscenity, which reflected the intolerance of immigrant, Jewish, and queer communities in the 1920s …
Trauma In The Acting Process: My Role As Camae In The Mountaintop And The Implementation Of Practical Techniques For Empowerment, Anita Bennett
Trauma In The Acting Process: My Role As Camae In The Mountaintop And The Implementation Of Practical Techniques For Empowerment, Anita Bennett
Electronic Theses and Dissertations, 2020-2023
Actors often use their life experiences to evoke emotions and give a compelling performance. Connecting with personal experiences for a role, however, can manifest traumatic experiences. Trauma in the acting process can trigger difficult memories and emotions, which affects the actor's well-being. In graduate school, I discovered that trauma was a detriment to my artistic freedom in the acting process. Without the appropriate tools to address trauma, it affected my well-being and caused me to burnout. Furthermore, trauma was ignored by those involved in the creative process and there was an expectation to mask emotions for the sake of the …

Harmony In Purpose: The Key Role Of Organizational Values In Nonprofit Collaboration And Cross-Sector Partnerships, Sannia Salman
Master's Projects and Capstones
This research paper aims to evaluate the role of organizational values in partner selection for nonprofit collaboration and cross-sector partnerships. In today's complex social landscape, organizations increasingly recognize the need to collaborate across sectors to address multifaceted challenges effectively. Partner selection is a critical process in establishing successful collaborations, as it determines the alignment of values, goals, and working approaches between participating organizations. Drawing upon existing literature on collaboration and organizational values, this study seeks to investigate whether organizational values influence the partner selection process in nonprofit collaboration and cross-sector partnerships. The research will employ a single method approach to …

Being Curious With Secrecy, Clare Stevens, Elspeth Van Veeren, Brian Rappert, Owen D. Thomas
Secrecy and Society
This article contributes to ongoing attempts to broaden out theorizations of secrecy from an intentional and willful act of concealment to a cultural and structural process. We do so by fostering a conversation between secrecy and curiosity. This conversation is enabled through a review of central themes in secrecy studies and curiosity studies, but also through an examination of a collaboration between the science center “We the Curious” and a network of academic researchers. In doing so, this article makes a case for the benefits of paying more attention to curiosity as a means of facilitating a multifaceted understanding of …

From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
From La Cosa Nostra To La Cultura Del Narcisismo: Psychoanalysis As Public Philosophy In The Sopranos, Thomas Patrick Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The aims for this thesis are to further investigate the show’s use of Tony’s psychotherapy as a narrative device in building the relationship between the work of art and the spectator. This device, I argue, possesses a Brechtian character: it not only breaks up the narrative action, but it also comments upon it. Most importantly, this device grounds spectators in a psychoanalytic outlook which enables the spectator to analyze the show’s central anti-hero, interpret the series of events around him, as well as the criticize the American climate he is a symbol for. I advance the thesis that The Sopranos, …

Qosqo: A Documentary Approach To The Preservation Of Andean Culture, Emma Volz
Qosqo: A Documentary Approach To The Preservation Of Andean Culture, Emma Volz
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis and creative project aspire to follow the well-worn path of documentary filmmaking. The written portion of this thesis includes background information on Incan history and the Southern Andean language of Quechua that informed and developed into my film, Qosqo. The short documentary is a hybrid between traditional and experimental non-fiction filmmaking, exploring Cusco, Peru’s spirituality through the sage perspective of a native Cusqueñan woman, Norma Sanchez de Incaroca.
The film is a personal reflection of Norma’s experience with the Quechua language, a historically marginalized and currently endangered language. Her reflections are framed within the context of Cusco’s complex …

The Road To Hell: Rebirth And Relevance In Musical Adaptations Of Katabatic Myth, Jarrod Deprado
The Road To Hell: Rebirth And Relevance In Musical Adaptations Of Katabatic Myth, Jarrod Deprado
Online Midwinter Seminar (OMS)
Adapting Greek mythology provides a framework to reapproach classic works through a contemporary lens to better understand the present. Of particular interest is the depiction of characters traveling to Hell in search of a better future. Looking at two myth-inspired musicals—The Frogs by Stephen Sondheim and Burt Shevelove and Hadestown by Anaïs Michell—we see two disparate journeys to the Underworld given contemporary relevance. The Frogs (1974) depicts Dionysus’ journey to Hades to bring back a poet (originally Euripides, now George Bernard Shaw). However, it was not until the 2004 Broadway adaptation that overtly anti-authoritarian messages were added, aimed at …
