Back In The Saddle Again: How To Prevent Cycling Saddle Sores, Michael G. Miller, David C. Berry
Back In The Saddle Again: How To Prevent Cycling Saddle Sores, Michael G. Miller, David C. Berry
Human Performance and Health Education Faculty Research
Any individuals cycle, competitively or recreationally, for enjoyment or to increase fitness. Although cycling can increase overall cardiovascular fitness while imposing minimal stress on the lower extremity joints, cycling for an extended period of time may render an individual susceptible to undesirable conditions, including tendonitis, bursitis, nerve pathology, impotence, and more commonly, saddle (seat) soreness. Saddle sores usually present as skin lesions of the inner groin and inguinal fold, which are commonly classified into three categories on the basis of severity: (a) chafing, (b) skin ulcerations, and (c) furuncles and folliculitis. The purpose of this report is to discuss different …

Werner Sichel Lecture Series
The 2007/2008 Werner Sichel Economic Lecture Seminar Series features six outstanding economists whose presentations will focus on the challenges and opportunities of globalization and international development. All presentations are free and open to the public. Globalization is primarily an economic phenomenon, but it has socio-cultural and political dimensions that significantly impact human welfare and development. The series' speakers will address various dimensions of globalization including poverty, foreign aid, global justice, global financial flows, and patent and knowledge spillovers to developing countries. Exploring The Literature On Relationships Between Gender Roles, Intimate Partner Violence, Occupational Status, And Organizational Benefits, Eileen Kwesiga, Myrtle P. Bell, Marshall Pattie, Angela M. Moe

Studies of intimate partner violence (IPV) and work have been primarily conducted with women in low-wage low-status (LWLS) positions, as much of this research has focused on poverty, welfare, and homelessness. Although women in LWLS positions represent a large percentage of working women in the United States, it is also important to investigate experiences of women in high-wage high-status (HWHS) positions because a growing number of women are employed within such jobs. We propose gender role theory can be used to explain occurrences of IPV among women in HWHS positions and their utilization of organizational benefits. We suggest those in …

Teachers As Reflective Practitioners: Examining Teacher Stories Of Curricular Change In A 4th Grade Classroom, William P. Bintz, Jill Dillard
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
This article describes findings from a classroom-based action research project conducted by two in-school teachers, a literacy coach and a 4'h grade teacher, implementing a new integrated literacy and social studies curriculum and the changes they made in curricular practices and beliefs over a three-year period of time. A university professor also served as an out-of-school researcher assisting with analyzing data, describing findings, and discussing implications. The project was based on the model of teacher as researcher asking two focused inquiry questions: 1) what can be learned about teaching by taking a reflective practitioner perspective as a way to think …

Who's Reading And Why: Reading Habits Of Lst Grade Through Graduate Students, Deanne Camp
Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts
The habit of reading develops over a period of time. This study explored reading habits across a wide range of students. An open-ended survey of reading habits involved 242 participants from grades 1, 4, 6, 8, 11, undergraduate non-education majors, undergraduate elementary majors, and graduate reading majors. As data were analyzed, themes emerged to categorize participant responses. Discussion of data offers suggestion to both teacher educators and classroom teachers about ways to develop and maintain the habit of reading.
