A Critical Narrative Study Of Mother-Daughter Relationships In Newcomer Families, Sarah F. Derby Jan 2005

A Critical Narrative Study Of Mother-Daughter Relationships In Newcomer Families, Sarah F. Derby

Digitized Theses

The number of newcomer women and girls arriving to Canada from developing countries is rising. The critical narrative study explored how newcomer women’s and girls’ experiences shape and are shaped by their relationships with each other within their newcomer context. Seven ethno-culturally diverse mother-daughter dyads participated. Individual and dyadic analyses were conducted on narrative data collected from in-depth interviews. Findings revealed the desire for all participants to combine the positive attributes from Canadian society with the positive attributes from their traditional culture. However, their ability to achieve this goal was thwarted by a perceived pressure to assimilate to Canadian ways, …

Application Of Mathematical Modeling To Manage Service Level Agreements Subject To Policies, Shashank Garα Jan 2005

Application Of Mathematical Modeling To Manage Service Level Agreements Subject To Policies, Shashank Garα

Clusters of heterogeneous machines have become standard distributed platforms for many scientific, commercial and educational applications. Clusters form the basis of server farms and data centers. Different organizations use these resources (usually for a fee). Static allocation of resources may lead to underutilization of resources. Therefore, it becomes important to have the capability to dynamically allocate resources. Clients expect service guarantees to insure against technical failures or loss of business. These guarantees are mutually decided upon between the service provider and client, and specified in the form of a Service Level Agreement (SLA). If expected service levels are not met, …

Building Nurse-Student Relationships In The School Community: Afeminist Perspective, Kimberly J. Kempa Dias Jan 2005

Building Nurse-Student Relationships In The School Community: Afeminist Perspective, Kimberly J. Kempa Dias

Digitized Theses

Background: With the release of the Community Health Nurses of Canada standards of practice (2003), the importance for nurses to establish empowering relationships within supportive environments is paramount. Moreover, it is important for nurses to recognize and understand how their position and the power it holds may influence relationships with clients in their practice. Purpose: Guided by feminist inquiry, the major purpose of this research was to critically examine the relationships between Public Health Nurses (PHNs) and adolescent students in the school community. Specific questions included: How do PHNs describe their relationships with adolescent students within a school community? What …

Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster Jan 2005

Assessing The Condition Of Juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza Melodia) Using Stable Nitrogen And Carbon Isotopes, Bethany L. Kempster

Offspring condition may predict a population’s future success. We studied the effects of nutritional stress on Δ N and Δ C in juvenile Song Sparrows (Melospiza melodia) handreared under ad libitum or food-stressed conditions, and compared them to conventional measures of condition. The degree of food stress significantly altered development, causing poor condition and increased corticosterone, glucose, and anemia. Despite this, we could not detect nutritional stress as measured by Δ N or Δ C and the birds did not display increased developmental instability. 15N enrichment may require greater levels of nutritional stress than used in this experiment. Δ C …

Dispersion halos found within the soil horizon have long been recognized surrounding ore deposits. Select elements found within this environment are weakly bound and can be extracted. The role of bacteria in low temperature biogeochemical processes, including the adsorption of metal ions and mineral precipitation, suggests that they should be involved in the creation of these halos. Three locations within the Abitibi greenstone belt were selected for bacterial characterization studies, Gémini, 180 East Zone, and the Cross Lake Property, with Cross Lake being the focus of a biodiversity study and a protease extraction experiment. Bacterial populations in dispersion halos are …
