Rheological And Structural Studies Of Linear Polyethylene Melts Under Planar Elongational Flow Using Nonequilibrium Molecular Dynamics Simulations, David J. Keffer, C. Baig, B. J. Edwards, H. D. Cochran, V. A. Harmandaris
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
We present various rheological and structural properties of three polyethylene liquids, C50H102, C78H158, and C128H258, using nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations of planar elongational flow. All three melts display tension-thinning behavior of both elongational viscosities, η1 and η2. This tension thinning appears to follow the power law with respect to the elongation rate, i.e., η ∼ Eb, where the exponent b is shown to be approximately −0.4 for η1 and η2. More specifically, b of η1 is shown to be …

A Validation Of The P-Sllod Equations Of Motion For Homogeneous Steady-State Flows, David J. Keffer, B. J. Edwards, C. Baig
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
A validation of the p-SLLOD equations of motion for nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulation under homogeneous steady-state flow is presented. We demonstrate that these equations generate the correct center-of-mass trajectory of the system, are completely compatible with (and derivable from) Hamiltonian dynamics, satisfy an appropriate energy balance, and require no fictitious external force to generate the required homogeneous flow. It is also shown that no rigorous derivation of the SLLOD equations exists to date.

A Comparison Of Simple Rheological Models And Simulation Data Of N-Hexadecane Under Shear And Elongational Flows, David J. Keffer, C. Baig, B. Jiang, B. J. Edwards, H. D. Cochran
Faculty Publications and Other Works -- Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering
The microscopic origins of five rheological models are investigated by comparing their predictions for the conformation tensor and stress tensor with the same tensors obtained via nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations for n-hexadecane. Steady-state simulations were performed under both planar Couette and planar elongational flows, and the results of each are compared with rheological model predictions in the same flows, without any fitting parameters where possible. The use of the conformation tensor for comparisons between theory and experiment/simulation, rather than just the stress tensor, allows additional information to be obtained regarding the physical basis of each model examined herein. The character …

Performance Still Matters: Explaining Trust In Government In The Dominican Republic, Rosario Espinal, Jonathan Hartlyn, Jana Morgan
Performance Still Matters: Explaining Trust In Government In The Dominican Republic, Rosario Espinal, Jonathan Hartlyn, Jana Morgan
Political Science Publications and Other Works
What explains low levels of trust in government institutions in democratizing Latin American countries? We examine this question in the Dominican Republic, employing data from three surveys conducted over 1994-2001. Our analysis finds that trust in government institutions is shaped primarily by perceptions of economic and political performance by government. There is little evidence of a relationship between civic engagement and institutional trust, and no relationship between democratic values and institutional trust. We find a curvilinear effect between socioeconomic status and institutional trust, with middle-sector groups significantly less trusting of government institutions than either the poor or the wealthy. Age …

Developmental And Neurogenetic Studies On The Peptidergic Nerve System In Drosophila, Youn-Jeong Choi
Developmental And Neurogenetic Studies On The Peptidergic Nerve System In Drosophila, Youn-Jeong Choi
Doctoral Dissertations
Neuropeptides in insects act as neurotransmitters and neuromodulators in the central nervous system (CNS) and as regulatory hormones released to the circulation. To gain insight into the mechanisms of tissue-specific Corazonin (Crz) regulation and functions in Drosophila, I cloned Crz-encoding genes from different species, and performed the phylogenetic analysis of Crz-encoding genes as well as Crz primary structures. To compare Crz expression patterns among different species, I performed in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry to detect Crz expression in the CNS. Although Crz gene sequences reveal a great deal of diversity, Crz expression patterns are conserved among different …

Leaping into Uncertainty: Teaching and Learning beyond Logic and Reason
In 1846, Soren Kierkegaard set forth the limits of logical systems and objective truth, neither of which can shed light on the important questions of life. “In logical systems,” the nineteenth century Danish philosophy argues, “nothing may be incorporated that has a relationship to existence, that is not indifferent to existence” (141) because a logical system is purely speculative. Existence is an actuality, a doing. Logical systems cannot account for the necessary leap in life between almost doing something—thinking about doing something (and Kierkegaard’s example is taking the …

High Stakes Gambling in the Master Class explores some of the unarticulated intangibles in a relationship between Master Teacher and Honors Student (who collaborated in writing this essay), calculated to produce a distinguished honors thesis, sometimes out of thin air, gambling, playing the hunches that will allow a gleam in the eye to metamorphose into gold on the page.

This study examines how design engineers and technical professionals (hereafter referred to as engineers) in innovative high‐tech firms in the U.S. and India communicate and use information in their daily work activities including research, development, and management. By observing engineers in the workplace, it extends our understanding of the engineering workplace, and the information environment in the workplace. This study will provide information useful for improving communication and information methods for accessing information and communicating in the workplace, which will ultimately lead to better job performance, facilitate innovation, and encourage economic growth. This poster focuses on the methodology the researchers …

The challenge this panel addresses is drawn from intersecting literature reviews and critical commentaries focusing on: 1) user studies in multiple fields; and 2) the difficulties of bringing different disciplines and perspectives to bear on user‐oriented research, design, and practice. 1
The challenge is that while we have made some progress in collaborative work, we have some distance to go to become user‐oriented in inter‐disciplinary and inter‐perspective ways. The varieties of our approaches and solutions are, as some observers suggest, an increasing cacophony. One major difficulty is that most discussions are solution‐oriented, offering arguments of this sort ‐‐ "if only …
